DDX7: Differentiable FM Synthesis of Musical Instrument Sounds

FM Synthesis is a well-known algorithm used to generate complex timbre from a compact set of design primitives. Typically featuring a MIDI interface, it is usually impractical to control it from an audio source. On the other hand, Differentiable Digital Signal Processing (DDSP) has enabled nuanced audio rendering by Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) that learn to control differentiable synthesis layers from arbitrary sound inputs. The training process involves a corpus of audio for supervision, and spectral reconstruction loss functions. Such functions, while being great to match spectral amplitudes, present a lack of pitch direction which can hinder the joint optimization of the parameters of FM synthesizers. In this paper, we take steps towards enabling continuous control of a well-established FM synthesis architecture from an audio input. Firstly, we discuss a set of design constraints that ease spectral optimization of a differentiable FM synthesizer via a standard reconstruction loss. Next, we present Differentiable DX7 (DDX7), a lightweight architecture for neural FM resynthesis of musical instrument sounds in terms of a compact set of parameters. We train the model on instrument samples extracted from the URMP dataset, and quantitatively demonstrate its comparable audio quality against selected benchmarks.


LM-CORE: Language Models with Contextually Relevant External Knowledge

Large transformer-based pre-trained language models have achieved impressive performance on a variety of knowledge-intensive tasks and can capture factual knowledge in their parameters. We argue that storing large amounts of knowledge in the model parameters is sub-optimal given the ever-growing amounts of knowledge and resource requirements. We posit that a more efficient alternative is to provide explicit access to contextually relevant structured knowledge to the model and train it to use that knowledge. We present LM-CORE -- a general framework to achieve this -- that allows \textit{decoupling} of the language model training from the external knowledge source and allows the latter to be updated without affecting the already trained model. Experimental results show that LM-CORE, having access to external knowledge, achieves significant and robust outperformance over state-of-the-art knowledge-enhanced language models on knowledge probing tasks; can effectively handle knowledge updates; and performs well on two downstream tasks. We also present a thorough error analysis highlighting the successes and failures of LM-CORE.

Chinese farmers recently began testing a new AI system that uses a combination of machine vision, voice recognition, and temperature sensors to keep track of pigs' location, health, and wellbeing. A new artificial intelligence (AI) project from tech conglomerate Alibaba could alleviate some of the myriad problems facing Chinese farmers in the pork industry. China is the world's largest producer and consumer of pork, and keeping track of the nation's estimated 700 million animals is notoriously difficult for farmers. They need to pay careful attention to ensure that piglets aren't crushed to death by their mothers, sows aren't bred past their prime, and sick pigs don't pass their illnesses on to the rest of the population. Currently, farmers track pigs by clipping wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to the animals' ears. These can be expensive, and farmers don't always have time to fit each pig with a tag and scan them.

Reports of the Workshops Held at the 2022 Internal Conference on Web and Social Media

The pre-conference day included a wide array of workshops and tutorials, spanning a range of topics. The tutorials covered the latest techniques in machine learning (including deep learning and BERT), information extraction, causal inference, word embeddings, and the use of Twitter API v2, and addressed use cases including mis/disinformation and business decision making. The workshops included those on Cyber Social Threats (CySoc), Social Sensing (SocialSens): Special Edition on Belief Dynamics, Images in Online Political Communication (PhoMemes), Novel Evaluation Approaches for Text Classification Systems on Social Media (NEATCLasS), Social Media for Emergency Response (SoMER), Data for the Wellbeing of Most Vulnerable, and News Media and Computational Journalism (MEDIATE). A Data Challenge was also held on this day, with a special focus on Health-Related Discourse on the Web. For the main conference, 454 reviewers and 86 senior PC members evaluated 455 papers submitted to the conference, with 122 being accepted for publication.
