Thinking of a career in AI? Make sure you have these 8 skills

#artificialintelligence

This article was originally published on .cult We write about all things career-related, make original documentaries, and share heaps of other untold developer stories from around the world. If you've ever used Alexa or Siri, sat in a self-driving car, talked to a chatbot, or even watched something recommended to you by Netflix, you've come across Artificial Intelligence, or AI, as it's commonly known. AI is a major driving force behind the world's advancement in almost every field of study including healthcare, finance, entertainment, and transport. Simply put, Artificial Intelligence is the capability of machines to learn like humans, take problem-solving decisions, and complete tasks that would otherwise require multiple individuals to invest long working hours.

AI-generated art illustrates another problem with computers

It all started with the headline over an entry in Charlie Warzel's Galaxy Brain newsletter in the Atlantic: "Where Does Alex Jones Go From Here?" This is an interesting question because Jones is an internet troll so extreme that he makes Donald Trump look like Spinoza. For many years, he has parlayed a radio talkshow and a website into a comfortable multimillion-dollar business peddling nonsense, conspiracy theories, falsehoods and weird merchandise to a huge tribe of adherents. And until 4 August he had got away with it. On that day, though, he lost an epic defamation case brought against him by parents of children who died in the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre – a tragedy that he had consistently ridiculed as a staged hoax; a Texas jury decided that he should pay nearly $50m in damages for publishing this sadistic nonsense.

Comparison-based Conversational Recommender System with Relative Bandit Feedback

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

With the recent advances of conversational recommendations, the recommender system is able to actively and dynamically elicit user preference via conversational interactions. To achieve this, the system periodically queries users' preference on attributes and collects their feedback. However, most existing conversational recommender systems only enable the user to provide absolute feedback to the attributes. In practice, the absolute feedback is usually limited, as the users tend to provide biased feedback when expressing the preference. Instead, the user is often more inclined to express comparative preferences, since user preferences are inherently relative. To enable users to provide comparative preferences during conversational interactions, we propose a novel comparison-based conversational recommender system. The relative feedback, though more practical, is not easy to be incorporated since its feedback scale is always mismatched with users' absolute preferences. With effectively collecting and understanding the relative feedback from an interactive manner, we further propose a new bandit algorithm, which we call RelativeConUCB. The experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets validate the advantage of our proposed method, compared to the existing bandit algorithms in the conversational recommender systems.

MockingBERT: A Method for Retroactively Adding Resilience to NLP Models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Protecting NLP models against misspellings whether accidental or adversarial has been the object of research interest for the past few years. Existing remediations have typically either compromised accuracy or required full model re-training with each new class of attacks. We propose a novel method of retroactively adding resilience to misspellings to transformer-based NLP models. This robustness can be achieved without the need for re-training of the original NLP model and with only a minimal loss of language understanding performance on inputs without misspellings. Additionally we propose a new efficient approximate method of generating adversarial misspellings, which significantly reduces the cost needed to evaluate a model's resilience to adversarial attacks.

'Black Myth: Wukong' gets two new trailers but not a release date

Engadget

Every August for the past two years, Chinese developer Game Science Studio has released new gameplay footage from its upcoming action RPG Black Myth: Wukong. Not one to miss a beat, it has done the same this year. On Friday, the studio shared a new eight-minute gameplay trailer and six-minute in-game cutscene. Much like last year's Unreal Engine 5 reveal, the former is partly a showcase for NVIDIA's DLSS AI-powered upscaling tech, and you can see what a difference it – and a year of additional work – has meant for the game's framerate. Compared to last year's trailer, the action is smoother and there are fewer framerate drops. We also see Game Science Studio iterate on From Software's Souls formula in a few interesting ways.
