AI to become a top investment area in the next three years: study
More than three in 10 healthcare leaders (38%) in Singapore are investing heavily in artificial intelligence in a bid to supercharge care in the city-state, the Philips Future Health Index 2022 report unveiled. Within the next three years, 74% of healthcare leaders expect AI to become a top investment area in the industry. Currently, healthcare leaders said their highest AI investment is for operational settings (16%), whilst only 12% invest in AI for clinical decision support which includes uses related to diagnosis or treatment recommendations, early warning scores, automatic disease detection and clinical decision guidelines. Others are investing in AI to integrate diagnostics (34%) and predict outcomes (32%). Whilst Singaporean healthcare leaders see AI as a key investment for the near future, many are already utilizing predictive analytics in some capacity, with almost half (45%) saying their hospitals or healthcare facilities have already adopted the technology.
The Next Phase of The Web Would Be Driven by AI
Reading an article, watching a video on TikTok or YouTube, listening to a podcast while you're out running, you feel you have a reasonable expectation the content you're consuming is created by a human being. There is good reason to assume at least part of what you're consuming was either created by or assisted by an AI or some form of NLP (Natural Language Processor) or machine learning algorithm. Whether it's a TikTok video about a viral trend, an article in a renowned newspaper, or an image accompanying a news story on television, chances are some forms of AI generation has taken place between the idea of the story being created and the story reaching you. It could be the image was generated using DALL·E 2 or another image-generating AI, it could be the title, or lede, or social media text was generated by an NLP, it's quite likely part of or the entire text was written by an AI based on the prompts and prior writings of a human creator, and if you leave your young kids watching YouTube videos, there's a very high chance they'll encounter videos entirely conceived of and generated by an AI. Whereas Web 1.0 was defined by people being able to publish content using HTML, CSS (and eventually JavaScript), and Web 2.0 was defined by people being able to publish content through user-friendly applications that generated the HTML and CSS and JavaScript for them, the next stage of the web is being defined right now.
Evaluation of Question Answering Systems: Complexity of judging a natural language

Question answering (QA) systems are among the most important and rapidly developing research topics in natural language processing (NLP). A reason, therefore, is that a QA system allows humans to interact more naturally with a machine, e.g., via a virtual assistant or search engine. In the last decades, many QA systems have been proposed to address the requirements of different question-answering tasks. Furthermore, many error scores have been introduced, e.g., based on n-gram matching, word embeddings, or contextual embeddings to measure the performance of a QA system. This survey attempts to provide a systematic overview of the general framework of QA, QA paradigms, benchmark datasets, and assessment techniques for a quantitative evaluation of QA systems. The latter is particularly important because not only is the construction of a QA system complex but also its evaluation. We hypothesize that a reason, therefore, is that the quantitative formalization of human judgment is an open problem.
An adaptive music generation architecture for games based on the deep learning Transformer mode

This paper presents an architecture for generating music for video games based on the Transformer deep learning model. Our motivation is to be able to customize the generation according to the taste of the player, who can select a corpus of training examples, corresponding to his preferred musical style. The system generates various musical layers, following the standard layering strategy currently used by composers designing video game music. To adapt the music generated to the game play and to the player(s) situation, we are using an arousal-valence model of emotions, in order to control the selection of musical layers. We discuss current limitations and prospects for the future, such as collaborative and interactive control of the musical components.

The Right Skill Set Is the One That Allows You to Pursue Your Interests
Well, every year, for the first week of this module, we engage in what I like to call our Data Science Bootcamp. This is an intensive preparatory week in which I present the students with a sample data science project, from start to finish, to give them a sense of what is expected from their group efforts. Every year I try to create a new project on a contemporary topic. In the past, I have covered topics such as marathon running (linked to Elide Kipchoge's efforts to break the 2-hour barrier), Hollywood movies (is it true that movies are rarely as good as the books on which they are based?), and the COVID pandemic, among others. During the bootcamp week, I describe how to take a topic from a vague project idea to a concrete set of suitable research questions, how to assemble an appropriate dataset, how to clean and analyze the data, and how to use the results of the analysis to carefully answer the research questions in a clear and compelling way.
