User-generated reviews are often our first point of contact when we consider watching a movie or a TV show. However, beyond telling us the qualitative aspects of the media we want to consume, reviews may inevitably contain undesired revelatory information (i.e. 'spoilers') such as the surprising fate of a character in a movie, or the identity of a murderer in a crime-suspense movie, etc. In this paper, we present a high-quality movie-review based spoiler dataset to tackle the problem of spoiler detection and describe various research questions it can answer.


News Headlines Dataset For Sarcasm Detection

Past studies in Sarcasm Detection mostly make use of Twitter datasets collected using hashtag-based supervision but such datasets are noisy in terms of labels and language. Furthermore, many tweets are replies to other tweets, and detecting sarcasm in these requires the availability of contextual tweets. To overcome the limitations related to noise in Twitter datasets, we curate News Headlines Dataset from two news websites: TheOnion aims at producing sarcastic versions of current events, whereas HuffPost publishes real news. The dataset contains about 28K headlines out of which 13K are sarcastic. To make it more useful, we have included the source links of the news articles so that more data can be extracted as needed. In this paper, we describe various details about the dataset and potential use cases apart from Sarcasm Detection.


Intel Labs Announces Integrated Photonics Research Advancement

What It Means: This advancement will enable the production of the optical source with the required performance for future high-volume applications, such as co-packaged optics and optical compute interconnect for emerging network-intensive workloads including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The laser array is built on Intel's 300-millimeter silicon photonics manufacturing process to pave the way for high-volume manufacturing and broad deployment. By 2025, Gartner forecasts that silicon photonics will be used in more than 20% of all high-bandwidth data center communications channels, up from less than 5% in 2020, and will represent a total available market of $2.6 billion. The growing demand for low power consumption, high bandwidth and faster data transfer is driving the need for silicon photonics to support data center applications and beyond. Why It Matters: Optical connections began replacing copper wires in the 1980s due to the inherent high bandwidth of light transmission in optical fibers instead of electrical impulses transmitted through metal wires.

Study shows dogs are more visually attuned to actions rather than who or what is performing them

Ever wondered what your dog is thinking when it gazes at the TV, seemingly fascinated by the News At Ten? Scientists have discovered that your pooch probably isn't focused on Huw Edwards specifically, but more what the people on screen are doing. Study dogs at Emory University in Georgia, USA had their brains scanned by an MRI machine while watching a half-hour video of stimulating content. This included clips of dogs running around, humans interacting with each other, vehicles passing by, and a cat in a house. Data from the MRI was fed into an artificial intelligence (AI) called Ivis, which correlated brain activity with whether an action or object was shown on screen. Results showed that dogs are vastly more visually attuned to actions in their environment, rather than who or what is performing those actions.

Abstract: X-ray vision, a technique that allows users to see through walls and other obstacles, is a popular technique for Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). In this paper, we demonstrate a dynamic X-ray vision window that is rendered in real-time based on the user's current position and changes with movement in the physical environment. Moreover, the location and transparency of the win- dow are also dynamically rendered based on the user's eye gaze. We build this X-ray vision window for a current state-of-the-art MR Head-Mounted Device (HMD) -- HoloLens 2 [5] by integrating several different features: scene understanding, eye tracking, and clipping primitive. Abstract: There is a long history of an effort made to explore musical elements with the entities and spaces around us, such as musique concrète and ambient music.
