Oh, Not This Again: "AI Will Rise Up and Destroy Mankind"

We analyze the expected behavior of an advanced artificial agent with a learned goal planning in an unknown environment. Given a few assumptions, we argue that it will encounter a fundamental ambiguity in the data about its goal. For example, if we provide a large reward to indicate that something about the world is satisfactory to us, it may hypothesize that what satisfied us was the sending of the reward itself; no observation can refute that. Then we argue that this ambiguity will lead it to intervene in whatever protocol we set up to provide data for the agent about its goal. We discuss an analogous failure mode of approximate solutions to assistance games. Finally, we briefly review some recent approaches that may avoid this problem.


Smells like Teen Spirit: An Exploration of Sensorial Style in Literary Genres

It is well recognized that sensory perceptions and language have interconnections through numerous studies in psychology, neuroscience, and sensorial linguistics. Set in this rich context we ask whether the use of sensorial language in writings is part of linguistic style? This question is important from the view of stylometrics research where a rich set of language features have been explored, but with insufficient attention given to features related to sensorial language. Taking this as the goal we explore several angles about sensorial language and style in collections of lyrics, novels, and poetry. We find, for example, that individual use of sensorial language is not a random phenomenon; choice is likely involved. Also, sensorial style is generally stable over time - the shifts are extremely small. Moreover, style can be extracted from just a few hundred sentences that have sensorial terms. We also identify representative and distinctive features within each genre. For example, we observe that 4 of the top 6 representative features in novels collection involved individuals using olfactory language where we expected them to use non-olfactory language.

The job was remarkably analog: a bundle of newspapers would be dropped off at my house, I would wrap them in rubber-bands (or plastic bags if it were raining), load them up in a canvas sack, and set off on my bike; once a month my parents would drive me around to collect payment. Little did I appreciate just how essential my role writ large was to the profitability of newspapers generally. Newspapers liked to think that they made money because people relied on them for news, furnished by their fearless reporters and hard-working editors; not only did people pay newspapers directly, but advertisers were also delighted to pay for the privilege of having their products placed next to the journalists' peerless prose. The Internet revealed the fatal flaw in this worldview: what newspapers provided was distribution thanks to infrastructure like printing presses and yours truly. Once the Internet reduced distribution costs to zero, three truths emerged: first, that "news", once published, retained no economic value.


Song Emotion Recognition: a Performance Comparison Between Audio Features and Artificial Neural Networks

When songs are composed or performed, there is often an intent by the singer/songwriter of expressing feelings or emotions through it. For humans, matching the emotiveness in a musical composition or performance with the subjective perception of an audience can be quite challenging. Fortunately, the machine learning approach for this problem is simpler. Usually, it takes a data-set, from which audio features are extracted to present this information to a data-driven model, that will, in turn, train to predict what is the probability that a given song matches a target emotion. In this paper, we studied the most common features and models used in recent publications to tackle this problem, revealing which ones are best suited for recognizing emotion in a cappella songs.


AI and 6G into the Metaverse: Fundamentals, Challenges and Future Research Trends

Since Facebook was renamed Meta, a lot of attention, debate, and exploration have intensified about what the Metaverse is, how it works, and the possible ways to exploit it. It is anticipated that Metaverse will be a continuum of rapidly emerging technologies, usecases, capabilities, and experiences that will make it up for the next evolution of the Internet. Several researchers have already surveyed the literature on artificial intelligence (AI) and wireless communications in realizing the Metaverse. However, due to the rapid emergence and continuous evolution of technologies, there is a need for a comprehensive and in-depth survey of the role of AI, 6G, and the nexus of both in realizing the immersive experiences of Metaverse. Therefore, in this survey, we first introduce the background and ongoing progress in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR) and spatial computing, followed by the technical aspects of AI and 6G. Then, we survey the role of AI in the Metaverse by reviewing the state-of-the-art in deep learning, computer vision, and Edge AI to extract the requirements of 6G in Metaverse. Next, we investigate the promising services of B5G/6G towards Metaverse, followed by identifying the role of AI in 6G networks and 6G networks for AI in support of Metaverse applications, and the need for sustainability in Metaverse. Finally, we enlist the existing and potential applications, usecases, and projects to highlight the importance of progress in the Metaverse. Moreover, in order to provide potential research directions to researchers, we underline the challenges, research gaps, and lessons learned identified from the literature review of the aforementioned technologies.


Is AI Art a 'Toy' or a 'Weapon'?

Earlier this year, the technology company OpenAI released a program called DALL-E 2, which uses artificial intelligence to transform text into visual art. People enter prompts ("plasticine nerd working on a 1980s computer") and the software returns images that showcase humanlike vision and execution, veer into the bizarre, and might even tease creativity. The results were good enough for Cosmopolitan, which published the first-ever AI-generated magazine cover in June--an image of an astronaut swaggering over the surface of Mars--and they were good enough for the Colorado State Fair, which awarded an AI artwork first place in a fine-art competition. OpenAI gave more and more people access to its program, and those who remained locked out turned to alternatives like Craiyon and Midjourney. Soon, AI artwork seemed to be everywhere, and people started to worry about its impacts. Trained on hundreds of millions of image-text pairs, these programs' technical details are opaque to the general public--more black boxes in a tech ecosystem that's full of them.


People who distrust fellow humans show greater trust in artificial intelligence

A person's distrust in humans predicts they will have more trust in artificial intelligence's ability to moderate content online, according to a recently published study. The findings, the researchers say, have practical implications for both designers and users of AI tools in social media. "We found a systematic pattern of individuals who have less trust in other humans showing greater trust in AI's classification," said S. Shyam Sundar, the James P. Jimirro Professor of Media Effects at Penn State. "Based on our analysis, this seems to be due to the users invoking the idea that machines are accurate, objective and free from ideological bias." The study, published in the journal of New Media & Society also found that "power users" who are experienced users of information technology, had the opposite tendency.
