Music to harvest and relax to: how the Stardew Valley soundtrack caught the rhythms of the seasons

The Guardian

Earlier this year, Eric Barone was approached by singer-songwriter Molly Rankin of power-pop group Alvvays. The game developer, best known as the one-man creative force behind the hit farming simulator Stardew Valley, was asked if he would like to contribute some art for the band's new single, Many Mirrors. Never one to limit himself, or to do things by halves, Barone created a whole music video instead. "That's just how I work," he tells me. You can tell from his work that Barone puts the whole of himself into it.

Nikon Updates NX MobileAir App With 'Deep Learning' Image Analysis

#artificialintelligence

Nikon has pushed an update for its NX MobileAir smartphone app that adds new JPEG capabilities, support for RAW files, new quality of life features, and a deep learning algorithm for image analysis. Nikon NX MobileAir is a smartphone app that uploads images taken with a Nikon digital camera to an FTP server without using a computer. It was originally launched last November and is billed as a particularly useful tool for photojournalists that are covering large events like the Olympics or FIFA World Cup who might need to get their images to publications quickly but don't have access to stable WiFi or ethernet. The company says that as part of this update, functions such as image filtering, which uses image analysis technologies, have been added or modified to improve speed and efficiency of workflows. First, Nikon has added what it bills as "deep learning analysis" into the app. The company says that NX Mobile Air now has an algorithm that uses deep learning to analyze images that have been imported, allowing users to filter images in specific criteria, such as subject types and conditions for quick access to intended images.

COMM - Ethical guidelines on the use of AI and data in teaching and learning for educators

#artificialintelligence

All across Europe, we are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) systems – sometimes without even realising it. Search engines, chatbots, machine translations, video games and other applications are now part of everyday life. Artificial intelligence can be a great asset to improve education and training for learners, educators and school leaders. However, it is important to better understand its ramifications.

AI warns user that photographers and artists will be replaced by AI

#artificialintelligence

Is artificial intelligence going to replace human workers? At the moment, a lot of labour-led jobs are safe from automation, but creative jobs -- such as writing, photography, painting and more -- are at risk of being overtaken by AI. Over the past year, AI programs that generate art such as books, pictures or even videos have become commonplace. Generative art programs such as Midjourney or Stable Diffusion have seen significant pushback for stealing art styles from real humans, plagiarising their art. Despite this, new artificial intelligence programs are still being developed every day, such as the recently-released ChatGPT. But what does artificial intelligence think of its own threat to human work?

Close your eyes and imagine for a moment that you're in Tatooine. Yes, the room inside the vehicle is a bit cramped, but hey, you're in the Star Wars saga so you'll take what you get. You squint into the vast expanse as Luke asks you if you see anything. But before you can celebrate, Tusken Raiders attack and your crew are hopelessly overpowered. Remember, this is Luke before he knew what the "Force" was.

Fine-grained Czech News Article Dataset: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Trustworthiness Analysis

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We present the Verifee Dataset: a novel dataset of news articles with fine-grained trustworthiness annotations. We develop a detailed methodology that assesses the texts based on their parameters encompassing editorial transparency, journalist conventions, and objective reporting while penalizing manipulative techniques. We bring aboard a diverse set of researchers from social, media, and computer sciences to overcome barriers and limited framing of this interdisciplinary problem. We collect over $10,000$ unique articles from almost $60$ Czech online news sources. These are categorized into one of the $4$ classes across the credibility spectrum we propose, raging from entirely trustworthy articles all the way to the manipulative ones. We produce detailed statistics and study trends emerging throughout the set. Lastly, we fine-tune multiple popular sequence-to-sequence language models using our dataset on the trustworthiness classification task and report the best testing F-1 score of $0.52$. We open-source the dataset, annotation methodology, and annotators' instructions in full length at https://verifee.ai/research to enable easy build-up work. We believe similar methods can help prevent disinformation and educate in the realm of media literacy.

Digital Eternity Is Just Around the Corner

WIRED

It's human nature to want to keep the memory of the deceased alive. Photography, for instance, has served as a powerful tool to help us do this. I've explored this with my 2020 project ALIVE: Lost for Words, where I photographed people against a projected image of their lost loved ones. Recently, the pandemic left us feeling closer than ever to death, forcing us to confront our own mortality and the legacy we leave behind. With our normal lives disrupted by social distancing, digital tools also radically impacted our traditional death rituals.
