HBO's 'The Last of Us' stays true to the game, and hits just as hard
HBO's take on the video game property finally answers the question: What if a big-budget TV or film adaptation stayed faithful to the source material, even repeating the same scenes, lines and big story beats? Because that's exactly what the show does. There are scenes throughout the first season that are direct line reads of key scenes from the game. The nine episodes follow the exact same story beats and almost the same locations as the original game too. People who know the game by heart will likely be able to recite some lines right as they're being spoken in the show.
AI-Based Affective Music Generation Systems: A Review of Methods, and Challenges
Music is a powerful medium for altering the emotional state of the listener. In recent years, with significant advancement in computing capabilities, artificial intelligence-based (AI-based) approaches have become popular for creating affective music generation (AMG) systems that are empowered with the ability to generate affective music. Entertainment, healthcare, and sensor-integrated interactive system design are a few of the areas in which AI-based affective music generation (AI-AMG) systems may have a significant impact. Given the surge of interest in this topic, this article aims to provide a comprehensive review of AI-AMG systems. The main building blocks of an AI-AMG system are discussed, and existing systems are formally categorized based on the core algorithm used for music generation. In addition, this article discusses the main musical features employed to compose affective music, along with the respective AI-based approaches used for tailoring them. Lastly, the main challenges and open questions in this field, as well as their potential solutions, are presented to guide future research. We hope that this review will be useful for readers seeking to understand the state-of-the-art in AI-AMG systems, and gain an overview of the methods used for developing them, thereby helping them explore this field in the future.
Predicting Hateful Discussions on Reddit using Graph Transformer Networks and Communal Context

We propose a system to predict harmful discussions on social media platforms. Our solution uses contextual deep language models and proposes the novel idea of integrating state-of-the-art Graph Transformer Networks to analyze all conversations that follow an initial post. This framework also supports adapting to future comments as the conversation unfolds. In addition, we study whether a community-specific analysis of hate speech leads to more effective detection of hateful discussions. We evaluate our approach on 333,487 Reddit discussions from various communities. We find that community-specific modeling improves performance two-fold and that models which capture wider-discussion context improve accuracy by 28\% (35\% for the most hateful content) compared to limited context models.
You Can Listen to Audiobooks Narrated by Artificial Intelligence
Apple is rolling out audiobooks narrated by artificial intelligence, reports the Guardian's Leyland Cecco. The company recently unveiled a series of fiction and romance audiobooks featuring "digital narration" on its Apple Books platform, which allows readers to browse and buy e-books and audiobooks. The two current A.I. narrators are called Madison, a soprano, and Jackson, a baritone, per Apple's website. In the future, the company plans to also offer A.I.-narrated nonfiction and self-development audiobooks and will be rolling out two additional digital voices named Helena and Mitchell. According to the Guardian, Apple approached independent publishers in recent months and asked them to participate in its digital narration initiative.
Anthropic's Claude improves on ChatGPT, but still suffers from limitations • TechCrunch
Anthropic, the startup co-founded by ex-OpenAI employees that's raised over $700 million in funding to date, has developed an AI system similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT that appears to improve upon the original in key ways. Called Claude, Anthropic's system is accessible through a Slack integration as part of a closed beta. TechCrunch wasn't able to gain access -- we've reached out to Anthropic -- but those in the beta have been detailing their interactions with Claude on Twitter over the past weekend, after an embargo on media coverage lifted. Claude was created using a technique Anthropic developed called "constitutional AI." As the company explains in a recent Twitter thread, "constitutional AI" aims to provide a "principle-based" approach to aligning AI systems with human intentions, letting AI similar to ChatGPT respond to questions using a simple set of principles as a guide.
AI project imagines what deceased celebs would look like today
A project called'As If Nothing Happened' uses AI to imagine what celebrities who met their untimely demise would look like today. Artists are increasingly using AI-powered tools for their creative projects. Alper Yesiltas, an Istanbul-based artist, has posted numerous images of celebrities that have been aged convincingly using AI. One of his collections is called'Young Age(d)' and uses AI to age well-known (and very much still alive) figures such as Greta Thunberg: However, Yesiltas' arguably more interesting collection is'As If Nothing Happened' which imagines what deceased celebrities would look like. In 2012, a performance at Coachella made headlines after a "hologram" of deceased rapper Tupac Shakur joined Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg onstage.
