Knowledge is Power, Understanding is Impact: Utility and Beyond Goals, Explanation Quality, and Fairness in Path Reasoning Recommendation

Path reasoning is a notable recommendation approach that models high-order user-product relations, based on a Knowledge Graph (KG). This approach can extract reasoning paths between recommended products and already experienced products and, then, turn such paths into textual explanations for the user. Unfortunately, evaluation protocols in this field appear heterogeneous and limited, making it hard to contextualize the impact of the existing methods. In this paper, we replicated three state-of-the-art relevant path reasoning recommendation methods proposed in top-tier conferences. Under a common evaluation protocol, based on two public data sets and in comparison with other knowledge-aware methods, we then studied the extent to which they meet recommendation utility and beyond objectives, explanation quality, and consumer and provider fairness. Detecting Stance of Authorities towards Rumors in Arabic Tweets: A Preliminary Study

A myriad of studies addressed the problem of rumor verification in Twitter by either utilizing evidence from the propagation networks or external evidence from the Web. However, none of these studies exploited evidence from trusted authorities. In this paper, we define the task of detecting the stance of authorities towards rumors in tweets, i.e., whether a tweet from an authority agrees, disagrees, or is unrelated to the rumor. We believe the task is useful to augment the sources of evidence utilized by existing rumor verification systems. We construct and release the first Authority STance towards Rumors (AuSTR) dataset, where evidence is retrieved from authority timelines in Arabic Twitter. Due to the relatively limited size of our dataset, we study the usefulness of existing datasets for stance detection in our task. We show that existing datasets are somewhat useful for the task; however, they are clearly insufficient, which motivates the need to augment them with annotated data constituting stance of authorities from Twitter.
${S}^{2}$Net: Accurate Panorama Depth Estimation on Spherical Surface

Monocular depth estimation is an ambiguous problem, thus global structural cues play an important role in current data-driven single-view depth estimation methods. Panorama images capture the complete spatial information of their surroundings utilizing the equirectangular projection which introduces large distortion. This requires the depth estimation method to be able to handle the distortion and extract global context information from the image. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep network for monocular panorama depth estimation on a unit spherical surface. Specifically, we project the feature maps extracted from equirectangular images onto unit spherical surface sampled by uniformly distributed grids, where the decoder network can aggregate the information from the distortion-reduced feature maps. Meanwhile, we propose a global cross-attention-based fusion module to fuse the feature maps from skip connection and enhance the ability to obtain global context. Experiments are conducted on five panorama depth estimation datasets, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method substantially outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods. All related codes will be open-sourced in the upcoming days.

Frank Pavich is the director of "Jodorowsky's Dune," a documentary about the Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky's attempt to film a version of "Dune" in the mid-1970s. I was recently shown some frames from a film that I had never heard of: Alejandro Jodorowsky's 1976 version of "Tron." The actors, unfamiliar to me, looked fantastic in their roles. The costumes and lighting worked together perfectly. The images glowed with an extravagant and psychedelic sensibility that felt distinctly Jodorowskian.
A Tech News Site Has Been Using AI To Write Articles, So We Did The Same Thing Here
Technology news outlet CNET has been found to be using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to write articles about personal finance without any prior announcement or explanation. The articles, which numbered at 73, covered topics such as "What Is Zelle and How Does It Work?" and had a small disclaimer at the bottom of each reading, "This article was generated using automation technology and thoroughly edited and fact-checked by an editor on our editorial staff." The bylines on these articles read "CNET Money Staff" without any indication that they were generated by AI. The use of AI to write these articles was first brought to light by a Twitter user, and further investigation revealed that the articles have been generated using AI since November 2022. The extent and specific form of AI being used by CNET is not currently known as the company did not respond to questions about their use of artificial intelligence.

Bill Gates has weighed in on some of the buzziest concepts in tech, revealing he's tepid about Web3 and the metaverse, but thinks artificial intelligence, or AI, is "quite revolutionary." The Microsoft cofounder was giving his take on tech trends at his annual Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, where he answered a handful of questions posed by Reddit users on a variety of subjects. One Reddit user asked, "Many years ago, I think around 2000, I heard you say something on TV like, 'People are vastly overestimating what the internet will be like in 5 years, and vastly underestimating what it will be like in 10 years.' Is any mammoth technology shift at a similar stage right now?" Gates replied: "AI is the big one. I don't think Web3 was that big or that metaverse stuff alone was revolutionary but AI is quite revolutionary."
