AI chatbot ChatGPT fails UPSC exam - India Today
By India Today Education Desk: AI chatbot ChatGPT first made the news in the context of exams when it cleared the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School's final exam for MBA students. Since its introduction in November 2022, it has become immensely popular across the world, causing numerous educational institutions to ban the use of the tool in exam halls. It has also performed highly in the US medical exam. However, ChatGPT has now failed to clear the UPSC exam, an experiment administered by Analytics India Magazine (AIM). AIM asked the chatbot 100 questions from UPSC Prelims 2022 Question Paper 1 (Set A) to which it could only answer 54 questions properly. The general cut-off score is 87.54.
MFAI: A Scalable Bayesian Matrix Factorization Approach to Leveraging Auxiliary Information

In various practical situations, matrix factorization methods suffer from poor data quality, such as high data sparsity and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here we consider a matrix factorization problem by utilizing auxiliary information, which is massively available in real applications, to overcome the challenges caused by poor data quality. Unlike existing methods that mainly rely on simple linear models to combine auxiliary information with the main data matrix, we propose to integrate gradient boosted trees in the probabilistic matrix factorization framework to effectively leverage auxiliary information (MFAI). Thus, MFAI naturally inherits several salient features of gradient boosted trees, such as the capability of flexibly modeling nonlinear relationships, and robustness to irrelevant features and missing values in auxiliary information. The parameters in MAFI can be automatically determined under the empirical Bayes framework, making it adaptive to the utilization of auxiliary information and immune to overfitting. Moreover, MFAI is computationally efficient and scalable to large-scale datasets by exploiting variational inference. We demonstrate the advantages of MFAI through comprehensive numerical results from simulation studies and real data analysis. Variational Quantum Classifiers for Natural-Language Text
As part of the recent research effort on quantum natural language processing (QNLP), variational quantum sentence classifiers (VQSCs) have been implemented and supported in lambeq / DisCoPy, based on the DisCoCat model of sentence meaning. We discuss in some detail VQSCs, including category theory, DisCoCat for modeling sentence as string diagram, and DisCoPy for encoding string diagram as parameterized quantum circuit. Many NLP tasks, however, require the handling of text consisting of multiple sentences, which is not supported in lambeq / DisCoPy. A good example is sentiment classification of customer feedback or product review. We discuss three potential approaches to variational quantum text classifiers (VQTCs), in line with VQSCs. The first is a weighted bag-of-sentences approach which treats text as a group of independent sentences with task-specific sentence weighting. The second is a coreference resolution approach which treats text as a consolidation of its member sentences with coreferences among them resolved. Both approaches are based on the DisCoCat model and should be implementable in lambeq / DisCoCat. The third approach, on the other hand, is based on the DisCoCirc model which considers both ordering of sentences and interaction of words in composing text meaning from word and sentence meanings. DisCoCirc makes fundamental modification of DisCoCat since a sentence in DisCoCirc updates meanings of words, whereas all meanings are static in DisCoCat. It is not clear if DisCoCirc can be implemented in lambeq / DisCoCat without breaking DisCoCat.
CNET Cuts 10% of Editorial Staff While Expanding AI
On Thursday, CNET began making layoffs to its editorial staff, just weeks after the company was exposed for using AI to produce articles without notifying readers. Some of the staff cuts include several longtime employees, according to The Verge. The layoffs total around a dozen people, a CNET staffer says, or about 10 percent of the editorial staff. In January, Futurism reported that CNET had published dozens of articles since last November that were generated using AI tools. The AI articles were full of errors and plagiarism, and readers were not informed of how they were written.

Recently, "AI" machine-learning technologies have been creeping their way into artistic fields in both entertaining and harmful ways. While some AI content creators are just making videos for harmless fun, others, like the creators of a recent AI-generated anime short, wrongfully believe they've democratized the animation industry when they've really just come up with a more technologically demanding method of plagiarizing other artists. Earlier this week, Corridor Digital, a Los Angeles-based production studio that creates pop culture YouTube videos, uploaded a video called "Anime Rock, Paper, Scissors." Written and directed by Niko Pueringer and Sam Gorski, it revolves around two twins vying for the throne left vacant by their recently deceased father. By leveraging the machine-learning text-to-image model Stable Diffusion, Corridor Digital gave camera footage filmed in front of a green screen a dramatic anime-like appearance.

Ex-Google engineer says Bing's A.I. chatbot seems unstable
The Google employee who claimed last June his company's A.I. model could already be sentient, and was later fired by the company, is still worried about the dangers of new A.I.-powered chatbots, even if he hasn't tested them himself yet. Blake Lemoine was let go from Google last summer for violating the company's confidentiality policy after he published transcripts of several conversations he had with LaMDA, the company's large language model he helped create that forms the artificial intelligence backbone of Google's upcoming search engine assistant, the chatbot Bard. Lemoine told the Washington Post at the time that LaMDA resembled "a 7-year-old, 8-year-old kid that happens to know physics" and said he believed the technology was sentient, while urging Google to take care of it as it would a "sweet kid who just wants to help the world be a better place for all of us." To be sure, while A.I. applications are almost certain to influence how we work and go about our daily lives, the large language models powering ChatGPT, Microsoft's Bing, and Google's Bard cannot feel emotions and are not sentient. They simply enable chatbots to predict what word to use next based on a large trove of data.

Now, the billionaire is courting AI researchers with a proposal to start a new AI company to rival the developer of ChatGPT, the tech news site The Information reported on Wednesday. "The danger of training AI to be woke--in other words, lie--is deadly," Musk tweeted in December.
