Mixed-Effect Thompson Sampling

A contextual bandit is a popular framework for online learning to act under uncertainty. In practice, the number of actions is huge and their expected rewards are correlated. In this work, we introduce a general framework for capturing such correlations through a mixed-effect model where actions are related through multiple shared effect parameters. To explore efficiently using this structure, we propose Mixed-Effect Thompson Sampling (meTS) and bound its Bayes regret. The regret bound has two terms, one for learning the action parameters and the other for learning the shared effect parameters. The terms reflect the structure of our model and the quality of priors. Our theoretical findings are validated empirically using both synthetic and real-world problems. We also propose numerous extensions of practical interest. While they do not come with guarantees, they perform well empirically and show the generality of the proposed framework.

A Sacramento, California pub issued a public apology after a far-left activist tied to Antifa slammed it for displaying footage from "Harry Potter" video game "Hogwarts Legacy" during work hours. The Antifa member accused Streets Pub and Grubof promoting hate towards the LGBTQ community by displaying a game affiliated with author J.K. Rowling, the creator of "Harry Potter." She has been called transphobic by LGBTQ activists for her views on biological sex. "Our sincerest apologies to those affected by this incident," the pub stated in a social media post, adding, "We will make sure to be more careful."

Walmart Leaked Memo Warns Against Employees Sharing Corporate Information With ChatGPT
Chatbots are disrupting industries in unexpected ways -- including retail. The latest evidence: A leaked memo from Walmart Global Tech warning against sharing confidential corporate or customer information with bots like ChatGPT. Business Insider reports that in a memo issued Tuesday, the big box store's tech arm said ChatGPT had been blocked following "activity that presented risk to our company." Insider indicated it viewed the memo and stated that Global Tech had evaluated and developed "usage guidelines around generative AI tools and are now opening ChatGPT for usage within the Walmart network." A Walmart spokesperson Insider contacted for comment didn't address blocking AI-powered bots but issued a statement that said in part that "new technologies present new benefits as well as new risks."
Could AI Replace Anime Background Artists? Netflix Thinks So.
A shortage of artists in the animation industry could lead studios to seek out AI companies for a solution. But, according to PC Mag, Netflix is already taking steps toward plugging that labor hole. The animated work in question is a Netflix Japan short called Dog & Boy. Attack on Titan's Wit Studio employed Rinna, an AI character and scenario company, to create the backgrounds for the anime in question. Netflix Japan admitted in a blog post that this project was an experiment.

Decades later, Æon Flux still presents a fresh alternative to black-and-white moralizing about life in a surveillance society. It takes the oppressive power of surveillance seriously, but it's stubbornly playful, unafraid to point out how often we willingly expose ourselves to the all-seeing lens. Chung, a veteran animator known for his work on Rugrats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Transformers, builds an aesthetic that blends Japanese anime, German Expressionism, and cyberpunk.
