Streams are made of this: will digital platforms change our musical memories?

The Guardian

The second we get in the car, my son strikes up his familiar tune. "I want my playlist, Mum!" Put your belt on, young man. I get a second's sweet peace as I hear the clunk-click. I need my playlist right now!" The playlist of my nearly-nine-year-old's favourite pop songs, usually on shuffle, starts to shake through the car. I give in to his nagging often, but I know why I do. I remember the joy of becoming a music fan, discovering new sounds, worlds and ideas through verses and choruses, through the giddy rushes of rhythms and melodies. I also know that my experiences were very different to his. At his age, I had to hang around the radio for hours or wait until Top of the Pops every Thursday, hoping that a song I loved would appear. These days, my son just asks Alexa. By my early teens, if I wanted to own an album, the process was a little more convoluted: save £9.99 of pocket money, beg my mum to drive me to Woolworths five miles away, pray that they had it, and if they did, play it ...

AI in Film: The Artificial Intelligence Director - Sofy.tv - Blog

#artificialintelligence

Some two years ago we published an article that tried to answer the question of when will we see the world's first AI movie director? In this article I stated that "It seems certain that the first AI directed movie will be either a cartoon or animated film." Well, two years on, it was brought to my attention, rather embarrassingly, that some people feel that by the time I even wrote that article that we had already seen the first AI directed film. I noted in that article that the "first ever AI generated script that was turned into a movie called Sunspring (2016)", a real milestone for artificial intelligence. Well, it turns out that it was an evolution of the same artificial intelligence system that, only two years later in 2018, did in fact'direct' a movie.

As GPT-4 chatter resumes, Yoshua Bengio says ChatGPT is a 'wake-up call'

#artificialintelligence

Yesterday, Microsoft Germany CTO Andreas Braun was quoted as saying that GPT-4 will be introduced next week and will include multimodal models. The report, which ran in the German news outlet Heise, instantly led to renewed online chatter about the possibility of GPT-4's debut, less than four months after the GPT 3.5 series, which ChatGPT is fine-tuned on, was released. Coincidentally, deep learning pioneer Yoshua Bengio, who won the 2018 Turing Award together with Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun, also made comments yesterday about ChatGPT and the potential of multimodal models. In a virtual Q&A titled "What's Lacking In ChatGPT? Bridging the gap to human-level intelligence," Bengio said that current work on multimodal large neural nets, that have images or video as well as text, would "help a lot" with the'world model' issue -- that is, that models need to understand the physics of our world. He also warned that market pressures will likely push tech companies towards secrecy rather than openness with their AI models, and that the "media circus" around ChatGPT is a "wake-up call" about the potential of powerful AI systems to both do good for society as well as create significant ethical concerns.

Cinema Has Helped 'Entrench' Gender Inequality In AI - Liwaiwai

#artificialintelligence

Study finds that just 8% of all depictions of AI professionals from 100 years of film are women – and half of these are shown as subordinate to men. Researchers from the University of Cambridge argue that such cultural tropes and a lack of female representation affects career aspirations and sector recruitment. Without enough women building AI there is a high risk of gender bias seeping into the algorithms set to define the future, they say. The team from the University's Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (LCFI) whittled down over 1,400 films to the 142 most influential cinematic works featuring AI between 1920 and 2020, and identified 116 characters they classed as "AI professionals". Of these, 92% of all AI scientists and engineers on screen were men, with representations of women consisting of a total of eight scientists and one CEO.

This comes after a report by the Los Angeles Times detailed the movie's alleged funding ties to Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev. The toy maker also used International Women's Day, on March 8, to honor six other women recognized as trailblazers in STEM fields -- including German marine researcher and microbiologist Prof Dr Antje Boetius and Mexican electrical engineer and Science Show host Katya Echazarret. Meanwhile, Thor: Love and Thunder filmmaker Taika Waititi is reportedly working on a new Star Wars feature, in which he is also rumored to star.

Why AI Image Generators Can't Get Hands Right

#artificialintelligence

AI images have shocked the photography world with their hyper-realistic output. But there is seemingly one thing they keep stumbling over -- hands. AI image generators such as DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion are notorious for adding one too many fingers or morphing digits together, making them look nightmarish. Earlier this year, PetaPixel reported on realistic party pictures generated by AI. But upon closer inspection, the giveaway was the hands; with one girl holding a camera with eight fingers.

Five times Netflix's Black Mirror predicted the future of tech

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Netflix's darkly addictive sci-fi series Black Mirror claims to show the'twisted, high-tech' of the near-future, but several technologies featured in the drama-filled episodes can already be found in our lives today. These include killer robot dogs, a social credit rating system and autonomous pizza delivery. In one of the most memorable recent episodes, 'The Entire History of You,' a contact lens featured a built-in camera that allowed humans to re-watch their memories. The concept is less futuristic than you might think, because Google may be already working on a similar device, while a startup is set to unleash a VR application that enables you to relive your experiences in a digital world, and Snapchat has released a device to capture memories. And let us not forget the second episode in the third series, when an augmented reality tester dies in both the natural and digital worlds.

Council Post: How To Personalize Your Content Through Data And Successfully Leverage A Digital Asset Management Solution

#artificialintelligence

Sebastien is the VP Sales North America of Wedia, a provider of an Enterprise Digital Asset Management (DAM) solution. In a world where the average American sees 4,000 to 10,000 ads a day, how can brands stand out from a particularly packed crowd and build customer loyalty? When Facebook seems to know about conversations you've had earlier in the day or when Netflix knows exactly what kind of film you'd be in the mood for tonight, you might feel a bit like Big Brother is watching you. In reality, these are clever examples of brands that have taken the time to invest in personalized content in order to acutely and intelligently create a relationship with their customers. Personalized content is a way of tailoring digital content to an individual through the use of data that a company has gathered about them.
