Why You Fell for the Fake Pope Coat
Being alive and on the internet in 2023 suddenly means seeing hyperrealistic images of famous people doing weird, funny, shocking, and possibly disturbing things that never actually happened. In just the past week, the AI art tool Midjourney rendered two separate convincing, photographlike images of celebrities that both went viral. Last week, it imagined Donald Trump's arrest and eventual escape from jail. Over the weekend, Pope Francis got his turn in Midjourney's maw when an AI-generated image of the pontiff wearing a stylish white puffy jacket blew up on Reddit and Twitter. But the fake Trump arrest and the pope's Balenciaga renderings have one meaningful difference: While most people were quick to disbelieve the images of Trump, the pope's puffer duped even the most discerning internet dwellers. This distinction clarifies how synthetic media--already treated as a fake-news bogeyman by some--will and won't shape our perceptions of reality.
World's largest collection of Apple devices will go up for auction this week
If you recognise any of these retro Apple computers, now may be a good time to have a rummage through your attic. That's because the set of over 500 devices is going up for auction on Thursday, and is expected to rake in thousands of dollars. 'The Hanspeter Luzi Vintage Apple Archive' is said to be one of the world's most comprehensive collection of Apple computers and products ever offered. It includes a rare 1983 Lisa I computer, which is currently estimated to sell for up to $3,000 (£2,400) alone. All devices were collected by the late Hanspeter Luzi, a Swiss special educational needs teacher who used computers as part of his lessons.

Learning-based solutions are efficient, but are they trustworthy enough to be embedded in a robot cooperating with or assisting humans? In this blogpost, Daniele Meli explores this question, and reviews logic programming as a route to trustworthy autonomous (and cooperative) robotic systems. As part of the 37th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI2023), 32 different workshops were held, covering a wide range of topics. We heard from the organisers of four of these workshops, who told us their key takeaways from their respective events. These were split into two articles: 1) #AAAI2023 workshops round-up 1: AI for credible elections, and responsible human-centric AI, and 2) #AAAI2023 workshops round-up 2: health intelligence and privacy-preserving AI. Hosted by the Alan Turing Institute, AI UK is a two-day conference that showcases artificial intelligence and data science research, development, and policy in the UK. This year, the event took place on 21 and 22 March, and we covered the panel discussion session on the role and impact of science journalism. AAAI have updated their publication policy to deal with AI systems: "It is AAAI's policy that any AI system, including Generative Models such as Chat-GPT, BARD, and DALL-E, does not satisfy the criteria for authorship of papers published by AAAI and, as such, also cannot be used as a citable source in papers published by AAAI".
Sonos Era 100 review: the latest best-sounding smart speaker
The Era 100 is the first of a brand new line of wifi speakers from multi-room audio specialists Sonos, taking what was good about its popular longstanding One series and adding more bass and stereo sound. With a similar aesthetic to the outgoing One, it is only 2cm taller and 1cm deeper, making it pretty compact and easy to place on a cabinet or bookshelf. It requires just a power cable, connecting to your router via wifi 6 for streaming music from more than 100 different services, including Spotify and BBC Sounds, controlled from the Sonos app on your phone. In a first for Sonos's non-portable speakers, it also supports Bluetooth 5 for impromptu streaming from guest's phones or other Bluetooth devices, which works great. A button on the top turns the voice assistant on or off.
7th batch of Google startups accelerator India now open
Tech giant Google on Monday announced to invite applications for the seventh batch of its startup accelerator programme in India that aims to nurture startups looking to leverage the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Google for Startups Accelerator (GFSA) is a three-month, equity-free accelerator programme for Seed to Series A tech startups in India. It has, so far, helped to accelerate the growth journeys of over 130 startups in India. For the next batch Google is looking to support startups that are focused on utilising the transformational technologies AI and ML. "We are looking for Indian startups working across different sectors using AI and ML to solve complex problems and tackle the toughest challenges in their industry," the tech giant said in a statement.
Explained: What Can Google's AI-Powered Bard Do
To use, or not to use, Bard? That is the Shakespearean question an Associated Press reporter sought to answer while testing out Google's artificially intelligent chatbot. The recently rolled-out bot dubbed Bard is the internet search giant's answer to the ChatGPT tool that Microsoft has been melding into its Bing search engine and other software. During several hours of interaction, the AP learned Bard is quite forthcoming about its unreliability and other shortcomings, including its potential for mischief in next year's US presidential election. Even as it occasionally warned of the problems it could unleash, Bard repeatedly emphasized its belief that it will blossom into a force for good.

This paper explores a novel application of textual semantic similarity to user-preference representation for rating prediction. The approach represents a user's preferences as a graph of textual snippets from review text, where the edges are defined by semantic similarity. This textual, memory-based approach to rating prediction enables review-based explanations for recommendations. The method is evaluated quantitatively, highlighting that leveraging text in this way outperforms both strong memory-based and model-based collaborative filtering baselines.

Explainable AI (XAI) has established itself as an important component of AI-driven interactive systems. With Augmented Reality (AR) becoming more integrated in daily lives, the role of XAI also becomes essential in AR because end-users will frequently interact with intelligent services. However, it is unclear how to design effective XAI experiences for AR. We propose XAIR, a design framework that addresses "when", "what", and "how" to provide explanations of AI output in AR. The framework was based on a multi-disciplinary literature review of XAI and HCI research, a large-scale survey probing 500+ end-users' preferences for AR-based explanations, and three workshops with 12 experts collecting their insights about XAI design in AR. XAIR's utility and effectiveness was verified via a study with 10 designers and another study with 12 end-users. XAIR can provide guidelines for designers, inspiring them to identify new design opportunities and achieve effective XAI designs in AR.
