Microsoft Adds Bing Chat to SwiftKey Beta for Android

The ongoing incursion of artificial intelligence into every app, service, and facet of your life continues. Microsoft's popular Android keyboard app SwiftKey lets you type by swiping across letters on the screen to generate words. Now, SwiftKey is getting a dose of chatbot to spice things up. Microsoft released its AI-enhanced Bing chatbot in February. Since then it has gone up against the other chatbot heavyweights, including Google's Bard and OpenAI's ChatGPT (which powers Bing Chat's backend).

Meta's 'groundbreaking' new AI improves image analysis, lets you 'cut out' objects in visual media

Fox News correspondent Mark Meredith has the latest on ChatGPT on'Special Report.' Meta has released a new artificial intelligence model that can pick out individual objects in images, presenting a big step forward in image recognition. The Segment Anything Model (SAM) can "cut out" objects in an image, Meta claimed on its website for the model. Users may initially think the model aims to help edit photos, but the purpose is to try to improve image analysis and segmentation, to isolate parts of the image, which can be "cut" and put in a side tray for copying and pasting into other programs. The program can even work on videos and even works on media that it has not encountered during training.

The advancements are already fueling disinformation and being used to stoke political divisions. Authoritarian governments have created seemingly realistic news broadcasters to advance their political goals. Last month, some people fell for images showing Pope Francis donning a puffy Balenciaga jacket and an earthquake devastating the Pacific Northwest, even though neither of those events had occurred. The images had been created using Midjourney, a popular image generator. On Tuesday, as former President Donald J. Trump turned himself in at the Manhattan district attorney's office to face criminal charges, images generated by artificial intelligence appeared on Reddit showing the actor Bill Murray as president in the White House.


North Korea conducts another underwater nuclear drone test

Seoul – North Korea has conducted another test of a nuclear-capable underwater attack drone, its state media reported Saturday, the latest demonstration of its military capabilities as it faces off against the United States and South Korea. North Korea tested a nuclear-capable unmanned underwater attack weapon called the Haeil-2 from Tuesday to Friday, state media reported, more than a week after it disclosed a new underwater drone called Haeil-1, which translates as "tsunami." The North's official Korean Central News Agency said that during the underwater strategic weapon system test the drone cruised 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) for 71 hours and 6 minutes and successfully hit a simulated target. Hi Sheldon! Creating Deep Personalized Characters from TV Shows

Imagine an interesting multimodal interactive scenario that you can see, hear, and chat with an AI-generated digital character, who is capable of behaving like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, as a DEEP copy from appearance to personality. Towards this fantastic multimodal chatting scenario, we propose a novel task, named Deep Personalized Character Creation (DPCC): creating multimodal chat personalized characters from multimodal data such as TV shows. Specifically, given a single- or multi-modality input (text, audio, video), the goal of DPCC is to generate a multi-modality (text, audio, video) response, which should be well-matched the personality of a specific character such as Sheldon, and of high quality as well. To support this novel task, we further collect a character centric multimodal dialogue dataset, named Deep Personalized Character Dataset (DPCD), from TV shows. DPCD contains character-specific multimodal dialogue data of ~10k utterances and ~6 hours of audio/video per character, which is around 10 times larger compared to existing related datasets.On DPCD, we present a baseline method for the DPCC task and create 5 Deep personalized digital Characters (DeepCharacters) from Big Bang TV Shows. We conduct both subjective and objective experiments to evaluate the multimodal response from DeepCharacters in terms of characterization and quality. The results demonstrates that, on our collected DPCD dataset, the proposed baseline can create personalized digital characters for generating multimodal response.Our collected DPCD dataset, the code of data collection and our baseline will be published soon.

When activated, the feature uses the front-facing camera, or selfie cam, to securely authenticate you are the owner of the iPhone. During the pandemic, Face ID received a lot of scrutiny for not functioning correctly, and it simply did not work whenever you were wearing your mask and attempted to unlock your iPhone. Before that realization, I'm sure you also noticed Face ID was much slower at unlocking your device when compared to its predecessor, Touch ID. Implementing this innovative and seemingly secure way of unlocking your precious iPhone was nothing short of a disaster.

Philosophers on Next-Generation Large Language Models

Back in July of 2020, I published a group post entitled “Philosophers on GPT-3.” At the time, most readers of Daily Nous had not heard of GPT-3 and had no idea what a large language model (LLM) is. How times have changed. Over the past few months, with the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Bing’s AI Chatbot “Sydney” (which we learned a few hours after this post originally went up has “secretly” been running GPT-4) (as well as Meta’s Galactica—pulled after 3 days—and Google’s Bard—currently available only to a small number of people), talk of LLMs has exploded. It seemed like a good time for a follow-up to that original post, one in which philosophers could get together to explore the various issues and questions raised by these next-generation large language models. Here it is. As with the previous post on GPT-3, this edition of Philosophers On was put together by guest editor by Annette Zimmermann. I am very grateful to her for all of the work she put into developing and editing this post. Philosophers On is an occasional series of group posts on issues of current interest, with the aim of showing what the careful thinking characteristic of philosophers (and occasionally scholars in related fields) can bring to popular ongoing conversations.
