Hollywood writers' strike highlights AI: Industry creatives 'should be concerned' for future, expert says
Veritone CEO Ryan Steelberg says the Writers Guild of America needs to make sure their writers are protected as AI becomes more popular. Nearly two weeks into the national writers' strike spearheaded by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), little progress has been made between both sides. The WGA has a litany of requests for the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Per its website, the WGA has specific proposals with regard to artificial intelligence, including the "regulation of AI on minimum basic agreement (MBA) -covered projects; AI can't write or rewrite literary material; can't be used as source material; and MBA-covered material can't be used to train AI." When it comes to these provisions that surround artificial intelligence, studios have put the kibosh on writers' requests, instead suggesting annual meetings to review evolving technology.

The American Ultimate Disc League recently tapped Lensa AI to help turn a first-of-its-kind approach to avatars into a reality for the 2023 season. Artificial intelligence company Prisma Labs launched the Lensa AI app in 2018. The photo and video editing platform has become one of the most popular apps on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

China could use AI deepfake technology to disrupt 2024 election, GOP senator warns
Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska told Fox News Digital on Thursday that he's concerned about China's use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) after a report claimed pro-Chinese groups were spreading CCP propaganda using AI-generated news anchors. EXCLUSIVE: China's expansive artificial intelligence (AI) operations could play a concerning role in the 2024 election cycle, Sen. Pete Ricketts warned on Thursday. "There's absolutely a possibility that they could do that for the 2024 election, and that's what we have to be on guard [for]," Ricketts told Fox News Digital in an interview in his Senate office. During a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee hearing earlier this month, Ricketts referenced China and its use of AI technology to create "deepfakes," which are fabricated videos and images that can look and sound like real people and events. A report released earlier this year by a U.S.-based research firm claimed a "pro-Chinese spam operation" was using AI deepfakes technology to create videos of fake news anchors reciting Beijing's propaganda.

Cognitive scientist and AI expert Gary Marcus advocates for the formation of an international body to govern emerging artificial intelligence technologies. The world needs a United Nations-like agency to regulate rapidly advancing artificial intelligence technology, particularly since governments are starting to pass laws that put varying demands on AI companies. "Right now, we have 37 countries that passed laws about artificial intelligence last year, each of them doing their own thing," said Gary Marcus, who hosts the AI-themed podcast, "Humans vs Machines with Gary Marcus." "But there's no coordination between what all of these countries are doing." Without a shared regulatory body, AI companies might be forced to modify their software and offer different versions from country to country -- or even state to state -- to comply with each unique law, according to Marcus.
Tuning Language Models as Training Data Generators for Augmentation-Enhanced Few-Shot Learning

Recent studies have revealed the intriguing few-shot learning ability of pretrained language models (PLMs): They can quickly adapt to a new task when fine-tuned on a small amount of labeled data formulated as prompts, without requiring abundant task-specific annotations. Despite their promising performance, most existing few-shot approaches that only learn from the small training set still underperform fully supervised training by nontrivial margins. In this work, we study few-shot learning with PLMs from a different perspective: We first tune an autoregressive PLM on the few-shot samples and then use it as a generator to synthesize a large amount of novel training samples which augment the original training set. To encourage the generator to produce label-discriminative samples, we train it via weighted maximum likelihood where the weight of each token is automatically adjusted based on a discriminative meta-learning objective. A classification PLM can then be fine-tuned on both the few-shot and the synthetic samples with regularization for better generalization and stability. Our approach FewGen achieves an overall better result across seven classification tasks of the GLUE benchmark than existing few-shot learning methods, improving no-augmentation methods by 5+ average points, and outperforming augmentation methods by 3+ average points.
Machine Vision Using Cellphone Camera: A Comparison of deep networks for classifying three challenging denominations of Indian Coins

Indian currency coins come in a variety of denominations. Off all the varieties Rs.1, RS.2, and Rs.5 have similar diameters. Majority of the coin styles in market circulation for denominations of Rs.1 and Rs.2 coins are nearly the same except for numerals on its reverse side. If a coin is resting on its obverse side, the correct denomination is not distinguishable by humans. Therefore, it was hypothesized that a digital image of a coin resting on its either size could be classified into its correct denomination by training a deep neural network model. The digital images were generated by using cheap cell phone cameras. To find the most suitable deep neural network architecture, four were selected based on the preliminary analysis carried out for comparison. The results confirm that two of the four deep neural network models can classify the correct denomination from either side of a coin with an accuracy of 97%.
RHO ($\rho$): Reducing Hallucination in Open-domain Dialogues with Knowledge Grounding

Dialogue systems can leverage large pre-trained language models and knowledge to generate fluent and informative responses. However, these models are still prone to produce hallucinated responses not supported by the input source, which greatly hinders their application. The heterogeneity between external knowledge and dialogue context challenges representation learning and source integration, and further contributes to unfaithfulness. To handle this challenge and generate more faithful responses, this paper presents RHO ($\rho$) utilizing the representations of linked entities and relation predicates from a knowledge graph (KG). We propose (1) local knowledge grounding to combine textual embeddings with the corresponding KG embeddings; and (2) global knowledge grounding to equip RHO with multi-hop reasoning abilities via the attention mechanism. In addition, we devise a response re-ranking technique based on walks over KG sub-graphs for better conversational reasoning. Experimental results on OpenDialKG show that our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods on both automatic and human evaluation by a large margin, especially in hallucination reduction (17.54% in FeQA).

Media mogul Barry Diller warned on Wednesday that artificial intelligence (AI) could be as "destructive" to news publishers as free online news was in the early aughts. Speaking at the Sir Harry Evans Global Summit in Investigative Journalism, Diller, who co-founded Fox Broadcasting Company and is now chairman of publishing giant IAC, said he was teaming up with News Corp. CEO Robert Thomson and German publisher Axel Springer to protect news publishers from the threat of AI. Speaking in conversation with journalist and conference organizer Tina Brown, Diller said it was a "terrible mistake" for publishers, through inaction, to allow AI tools like ChatGPT to "suck up every known piece of work that has ever been done". Large language models like ChatGPT are trained on massive amounts of content scraped from across the internet. The billionaire, who is also chairman of Expedia, compared the potential impact of AI on media companies to the early days of online news before paywalls were introduced.
