Fans are adapting 'Twin Peaks' into a PS1-style adventure game, and there's a demo

You may have watched the original run of Twin Peaks so many times that you exclaim "damn fine coffee" each and every time you grab a cup, but have you ever played the story through the eyes of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper? You'll soon be able to do just that via the magic of video games. A small French developer called Blue Rose Team has been prepping Twin Peaks: Into the Night for a while now, and it just dropped a demo of the fan-made game. The graphics are retro and decidedly PS1-flavored, which makes sense given how the show premiered in 1990. The gameplay looks to be full of exploration, complete with conversations with the town's many oddball residents, though there's a survival horror element reminiscent of the original Resident Evil titles.

My union, the Writers Guild of America (WGA), has been on strike since May 2, when our contract with the studios – the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) – expired after talks broke down. So, I woke up that morning and headed over to Disney Studios in Burbank, California, wearing a pair of Mickey Mouse ears my niece had cajoled me into buying on a trip to Disneyland. I covered the ears with two words: "FAIR" and "CONTRACT". I've been doing much the same thing for more than 100 days since then. A few of our demands: increased wages, commensurate with industry growth and inflation; writers should get a proportionate cut if shows do well; that cut should grow if more people watch my show in an increasing number of countries; weekly pay for screenwriters; restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence and minimum staffing for writers' rooms.

Evans' mention of Beatles legend John Lennon ended up becoming somewhat of a reality, but not in the hands of just any creator, but fellow Beatle Paul McCartney. Earlier this year, McCartney told BBC Radio 4's Today show that there was a new final song from the band in the works, with the assistance of AI. "When we came to make what will be the last Beatles record it was a demo that John had – that we worked on and we just finished it up – it'll be released this year. We were able to take John's voice and get it pure through this AI so that then we could mix the record as you would normally do," McCartney said. After some backlash from fans, McCartney clarified that Lennon's vocals were original and not generated by computer. "We've seen some confusion and speculation about it," he shared to X. "Can't say too much at this stage but to be clear, nothing has been artificially or synthetically created. It's all real and we all play on it. We cleaned up some existing recordings – a process which has gone on for years," he assured angry fans. The last two surviving Beatles, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, have made it clear that there is nothing artificially generated about their late bandmate John Lennon's voice in a new song, set to be released later this year.


Diff2Lip: Audio Conditioned Diffusion Models for Lip-Synchronization

The task of lip synchronization (lip-sync) seeks to match the lips of human faces with different audio. It has various applications in the film industry as well as for creating virtual avatars and for video conferencing. This is a challenging problem as one needs to simultaneously introduce detailed, realistic lip movements while preserving the identity, pose, emotions, and image quality. Many of the previous methods trying to solve this problem suffer from image quality degradation due to a lack of complete contextual information. In this paper, we present Diff2Lip, an audio-conditioned diffusion-based model which is able to do lip synchronization in-the-wild while preserving these qualities. We train our model on Voxceleb2, a video dataset containing in-the-wild talking face videos. Extensive studies show that our method outperforms popular methods like Wav2Lip and PC-AVS in Fr\'echet inception distance (FID) metric and Mean Opinion Scores (MOS) of the users. We show results on both reconstruction (same audio-video inputs) as well as cross (different audio-video inputs) settings on Voxceleb2 and LRW datasets. ChatHaruhi: Reviving Anime Character in Reality via Large Language Model

Role-playing chatbots built on large language models have drawn interest, but better techniques are needed to enable mimicking specific fictional characters. We propose an algorithm that controls language models via an improved prompt and memories of the character extracted from scripts. We construct ChatHaruhi, a dataset covering 32 Chinese / English TV / anime characters with over 54k simulated dialogues. Exploring Sampling Techniques for Generating Melodies with a Transformer Language Model

Research in natural language processing has demonstrated that the quality of generations from trained autoregressive language models is significantly influenced by the used sampling strategy. In this study, we investigate the impact of different sampling techniques on musical qualities such as diversity and structure. To accomplish this, we train a high-capacity transformer model on a vast collection of highly-structured Irish folk melodies and analyze the musical qualities of the samples generated using distribution truncation sampling techniques. Specifically, we use nucleus sampling, the recently proposed "typical sampling", and conventional ancestral sampling. We evaluate the effect of these sampling strategies in two scenarios: optimal circumstances with a well-calibrated model and suboptimal circumstances where we systematically degrade the model's performance. We assess the generated samples using objective and subjective evaluations. We discover that probability truncation techniques may restrict diversity and structural patterns in optimal circumstances, but may also produce more musical samples in suboptimal circumstances.
