Pressmatch: Automated journalist recommendation for media coverage with Nearest Neighbor search

Slating a product for release often involves pitching journalists to run stories on your press release. Good media coverage often ensures greater product reach and drives audience engagement for those products. Hence, ensuring that those releases are pitched to the right journalists with relevant interests is crucial, since they receive several pitches daily. Keeping up with journalist beats and curating a media contacts list is often a huge and time-consuming task. This study proposes a model to automate and expedite the process by recommending suitable journalists to run media coverage on the press releases provided by the user.


SPTS v2: Single-Point Scene Text Spotting

Abstract--End-to-end scene text spotting has made significant progress due to its intrinsic synergy between text detection and recognition. Previous methods commonly regard manual annotations such as horizontal rectangles, rotated rectangles, quadrangles, and polygons as a prerequisite, which are much more expensive than using single-point. Our new framework, SPTS v2, allows us to train high-performing text-spotting models using a single-point annotation. SPTS v2 reserves the advantage of the auto-regressive Transformer with an Instance Assignment Decoder (IAD) through sequentially predicting the center points of all text instances inside the same predicting sequence, while with a Parallel Recognition Decoder (PRD) for text recognition in parallel, which significantly reduces the requirement of the length of the sequence. These two decoders share the same parameters and are interactively connected with a simple but effective information transmission process to pass the gradient and information. Comprehensive experiments on various existing benchmark datasets demonstrate the SPTS v2 can outperform previous state-of-the-art single-point text spotters with fewer parameters while achieving 19 faster inference speed. Within the context of our SPTS v2 framework, our experiments suggest a potential preference for single-point representation in scene text spotting when compared to other representations. Such an attempt provides a significant opportunity for scene text spotting applications beyond the realms of existing paradigms.

A handful of Gannett-owned papers briefly published AI-generated sports stories this month based on box score data, Axios reported, which were quickly met with condemnation from social media commenters. The Columbus Dispatch is one of a handful of the newspapers that faced criticisms for awkward phrasing, such as describing a high school football game as "high school football action," which left readers calling the article "terrible." Other awkward phrasing included AI describing the Ohio game as a "close encounter of the athletic kind," according to Axios.


Ukrainian drones hit Russia's Kursk region, Moscow repels attack: Governors

Two Ukrainian drones attacked the Russian town of Kurchatov in the Kursk region, damaging administrative and residential buildings, while a third drone was shot down near Moscow, local officials said. Kursk regional Governor Roman Starovoit said emergency services were assessing the damage in Kurchatov town following the early morning attack on Friday. Starovoit wrote on the Telegram messaging app that two buildings were damaged but did not provide further details. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin also reported early on Friday that Russian air defences had shot down a drone that was approaching the capital city. The drone was downed near Lyubertsy, which is located approximately 20km (12 miles) southeast of central Moscow, he wrote on Telegram.


Topology-aware Tensor Decomposition for Meta-graph Learning

Heterogeneous graphs generally refers to graphs with different types of nodes and edges. A common approach for extracting useful information from heterogeneous graphs is to use meta-graphs, which can be seen as a special kind of directed acyclic graph (DAG) with same node and edge types as the heterogeneous graph. However, how to design proper meta-graphs is challenging. Recently, there have been many works on learning suitable meta-graphs from a heterogeneous graph. Existing methods generally introduce continuous weights for edges that are independent of each other, which ignores the topological stucture of meta-graphs and can be ineffective. To address this issue, we propose a new viewpoint from tensor on learning meta-graphs. Such a viewpoint not only helps interpret the limitation of existing works by CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition, but also inspires us to propose a topology-aware tensor decomposition, called TENSUS, that reflects the structure of DAGs. The proposed topology-aware tensor decomposition is easy to use and simple to implement, and it can be taken as a plug-in part to upgrade many existing works, including node classification and recommendation on heterogeneous graphs. Experimental results on different tasks demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the state-of-the-arts for all these tasks.

Fearing digital 'pillaging,' news outlets block OpenAI web bot

A growing number of media outlets are blocking a webpage-scanning tool used by ChatGPT creator OpenAI to improve its artificial intelligence models. The New York Times, CNN, Australian broadcaster ABC and news agencies Reuters and Bloomberg have taken steps to thwart GPTBot, a web crawler launched on August 8. They were followed by French news organizations including France 24, RFI, Mediapart, Radio France and TF1.
