Artificial intelligence working group needed
Most artificial intelligence is actually not human-shaped robots or talking computers. The risk of artificial intelligence to jobs should be considered by a Government working group, a law firm and a business organisation say. In a call to action paper, the Institute of Directors and law firm Chapman Tripp have highlighted the risks, opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence presents. Institute chief executive Simon Arcus said artificial intelligence had the greatest potential to affect people's jobs. "What we don't want to have is a whole lot of efficiencies created by artificial intelligence that displaces people and leaves people with no jobs and no future."
The Morning After: Thursday, June 8th 2017
Welcome to your Thursday morning. Russia has a vending machine for that. I think we know the answer. You might not notice the brighter screen, but the performance is noticeably better.A day with Apple's new iMac (no, not the Pro) Executive Editor Dana Wollman left WWDC on Monday with an iMac. The bad news is that it's not the iMac Pro.
The Drone Rules That Never Became Law
The laws governing the use of drones in the United States are changing so fast it can be hard to keep up. But I'd like to explore here some proposed drone rules that never went into effect because the legislation that described them, Senate bill 2658 (the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2016), was never passed. Why care about rules that didn't become law? It's my theory that although the legislation died in Congress last year, the people championing various parts of it are still around and may yet influence future laws. So an examination of the ill-fated legislation could provide a window on what the future holds for drone operators.

The Chatbot Therapist Will See You Now
Chatbots are taking over the world. Over the past few years, virtual help agents have taken on surprisingly sensitive jobs in modern society: counseling Syrian refugees fleeing civil war, creating quiet spaces of contemplation for millions of Chinese living in densely populated cities, and helping Australians access national disability benefits. Bots have offered help, support, and companionship. But there's one line none of them have yet crossed: actually treating patients. That's just changed, with the release of a talk therapy chatbot that goes by … wait for it … Woebot.
The Responsible AI Imperative Accenture
AI promises great opportunity, and with that comes great responsibility for government and enterprise leaders alike. In the last year, there has been an ever-increasing velocity of articles, blogs, speeches and thinking raising ethical concerns about AI. What are the national or international economic policy changes we need to make to reduce the potential for disruption in specific geographies or economic sectors? What are the risks for labor displacement? What specific types of job training and counseling programs will be effective in helping people adapt to a new age of machines as co-workers and new jobs created as a result of AI? What new levels of protection should be introduced to safeguard not just an individual's data but also the data personas of individuals?
A timeline of when AI could outperform humans
Attorney General Jeff Sessions suggested he could resign as tensions with President Trump rose, ABC News' Jonathan Karl reports. The NYT's Maggie Haberman later confirmed Karl's report, adding that Trump declined Sessions' offer. The source of the tension: Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe, which he did not consult with Trump about ahead of time. Two sources close to the president say he lashed out repeatedly at the attorney general in private meetings, blaming the recusal for the expansion of the Russian investigation… but sources say the frustration runs both ways."
A Convex Framework for Fair Regression
Berk, Richard, Heidari, Hoda, Jabbari, Shahin, Joseph, Matthew, Kearns, Michael, Morgenstern, Jamie, Neel, Seth, Roth, Aaron
The widespread use of machine learning to make consequential decisions about individual citizens (including in domains such as credit, employment, education and criminal sentencing [3, 4, 26, 29]) has been accompanied by increased reports of instances in which the algorithms and models employed can be unfair or discriminatory in a variety of ways [2, 30]. As a result, research on fairness in machine learning and statistics has seen rapid growth in recent years [1, 5-7, 9-11, 13, 14, 18-21, 25, 27], and several mathematical formulations have been proposed as metrics of (un)fairness for a number of different learning frameworks. While much of the attention to date has focused on (binary) classification settings, where standard fairness notions include equal false positive or negative rates across different populations, less attention has been paid to fairness in (linear and logistic) regression settings, where the target and/or predicted values are continuous, and the same value may not occur even twice in the training data. In this work, we introduce a rich family of fairness metrics for regression models that take the form of a fairness regularizer and apply them to the standard loss functions for linear and logistic regression. Since these loss functions and our fairness regularizer are convex, the combined objective functions obtained from our framework are also convex, and thus permit efficient optimization. Furthermore, our family of fairness metrics covers the spectrum from the type of group fairness that is common in classification formulations (where e.g.
New AI platform launched for legal technology
After more than two years of development and a successful limited availability program, legal technology company CS Disco Inc has announced the general availability of DISCO AI. 'Deep learning AI is changing the landscape of innovation in technology. From self-driving cars and home automation, to cancer diagnosis and crime prevention, AI can help solve some of the world's biggest and most complex challenges,' said Neil Etheridge, VP of Marketing at DISCO. 'We wanted to use that technology to simplify and automate the tasks faced today by law firms and corporate legal departments.' While there will be many applications for DISCO AI, initially the focus is to dramatically reduce the time, burden, and cost of identifying evidence in legal document review - a process known as ediscovery. Although older, more rigid technologies and processes - sometimes referred to as TAR (Technology Assisted Review) - have been applied to ediscovery, adoption and results have been limited compared to the potential that AI can deliver.
How a Solar Drone Can Solve Hunger - Impakter
In late February, the UN-Secretary General held a press conference, highlighting the risk of starvation in East Africa and the necessity to raise funds to address the emergency situations in Somalia and South Sudan. Drought has been back in these countries and their neighbours since 2016, leading to a huge current food crisis. While governments are trying to handle the situation, how could technology innovations help prevent starvation and improve agriculture management in the future? We met with Laurent Rivière, a French 30 years-old entrepreneur, who shared with us his view on the subject with a combination of engineer pragmatism and changemaker idealism . Founder and CEO at Sunbirds for two years, he explained to us how his "bird of the sun," his solar drone, is addressing the agriculture challenges of the 21st century.
