How Will Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Impact Healthcare?
Additionally, there's been a lot of talk about artificial intelligence and machine learning. Although these technologies are described as impactful as the Internet, there are fears about their full integration into society. For those in healthcare, it's worth evaluating and strategizing the implementation of artificial intelligence and machine learning into facilities to drive patient outcomes, improve productivity and efficiency, and reduce costs. Here are some things to consider. Artificial intelligence, or AI, has been used interchangeably with machine learning.
Michigan Legislature Cuts Fines After Jobless Fraud Fiasco
While the legislation won unanimous support and is backed by the business community, Democrats and others said it is neither comprehensive nor perfect and more must be done to make things right for people who were falsely accused by a computer system implemented by the Republican governor's administration. A law enacted earlier this year prevents the state from adjudicating a claimant's case as fraud without human verification.
Google Might Re-Conquer China With Artificial Intelligence
The US search engine has announced it will launch an artificial intelligence (AI) research center in China, albeit most Google services have been blocked in the country. According to Google, the research center will be "the first of a kind" in Asia, and will target China's local talent. Despite new censorship restrictions on the Internet, introduced last year, the initiative has received a warm welcome among Chinese policy makers, who seek to advance technologic development in the country. China has been maintaining tight control over the Internet, with officials saying that the web has undermined socialist ideas and stability in the country. To access forbidden content, many people use VPN services, which grant them access to Google services and other blocked web-sites.
Botnet hackers that caused huge Internet blackout did it for money, revenge
A USA TODAY motion graphic explaining the steps hackers use to take down servers. A graphic representation of the dangers posed by botnets, stealth robotic computer networks that place malicious hardware on the computers of unsuspecting users. SAN FRANCISCO -- A New Jersey man has pleaded guilty to computer crimes charges for an online attack that caused a massive Internet outage last year, according to federal court documents unsealed Tuesday. The Justice Department says Paras Jha built the Mirai botnet, which operated hundreds of thousands of infected household devices to flood websites with traffic, knocking out services such as Netflix and PayPal. The plea agreement was filed Dec. 5 in federal court in Alaska.

Modern copyright law can't keep pace with thinking machines
This past April, engineer Alex Reben developed and posted to YouTube, "Deeply Artificial Trees", an art piece powered by machine learning, that leveraged old Joy of Painting videos. It generate gibberish audio in the speaking style and tone of Bob Ross, the show's host. Bob Ross' estate was not amused, subsequently issuing a DMCA takedown request and having the video knocked offline until very recently. Much of Reben's art, supported by non-profit Stochastic Labs, seeks to raise such conundrums. "Doing something that's provocative and doing something that's public, I think, starts the conversation and gets them going in a place where the general public can start thinking about them," he told Engadget.
Racy Virtual-Reality Assistant Pulled After Questions Raised
The virtual-assistant avatar, named "Vivi," was in beta testing for a virtual-reality headset device sold by iQiyi, the online streaming unit of Baidu Inc., which owns China's biggest internet search engine. Vivi was ostensibly intended to help users complete tasks via voice commands--such as selecting a film or videogame to play. But it could also flirt with users and respond to commands to dance, according to user reviews posted on Chinese gaming websites and online forums. "The most important thing is she can perform sexy dances, with her enchanting figure, and only for you," one user wrote on Zhihu, a Chinese Q&A website. After The Journal contacted iQiyi about Vivi, the company removed the avatar and said in a statement: "The earlier version of the product is a beta-testing version designed to gather users' feedback. We'd like to make an apology for the concerns it might have raised."
Lawyer-bots are shaking up jobs
Meticulous research, deep study of case law, and intricate argument-building--lawyers have used similar methods to ply their trade for hundreds of years. But they'd better watch out, because artificial intelligence is moving in on the field. As of 2016, there were over 1,300,000 licensed lawyers and 200,000 paralegals in the U.S. Research group McKinsey estimates that 22 percent of a lawyer's job and 35 percent of a law clerk's job can be automated, which means that while humanity won't be completely overtaken, major businesses and career adjustments aren't far off (see "Is Technology About to Decimate White-Collar Work?"). "If I was the parent of a law student, I would be concerned a bit," says Todd Solomon, a partner at the law firm McDermott Will & Emery, based in Chicago. "There are fewer opportunities for young lawyers to get trained, and that's the case outside of AI already. But if you add AI onto that, there are ways that is advancement, and there are ways it is hurting us as well."
Google to open AI research centre in China
Google is deepening its push into artificial intelligence (AI) by opening a research centre in China, even though its search services remain blocked in the country. Google said the facility would be the first its kind in Asia and would aim to employ local talent. Silicon Valley is focusing heavily on the future applications for AI. China has also indicated strong support for AI development and for catching up with the US. Research into artificial intelligence has the potential to improve a range of technologies, from self-driving cars and automated factories to translation products and facial recognition software.
Why You Really, Really Care About Robots Getting 'Human' Rights
In Estonia, where the digital state was invented, the government is hard at work on the legal status of robots. The question is: do artificial intelligences deserve "human" rights? This may seem like a particularly lame way for EU bureaucrats to kill some time and spend taxpayer cash, slightly ahead of counting angels on pins, and just behind dictating rules around who can make cheese, or what wines qualify as "Burgundy." Because in a time when AI is advancing and commerce will move largely to AI-driven voice-powered systems, you will soon be in command of intelligent systems. You'll be able to request that systems buy things, reserve tickets, and purchase commodities for you.
