Before Robots Can Outsmart Humans, the Tech Industry Has a Lot of Work to Do

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence is being touted as a panacea for everything from curing cancer to preventing crime. However, to achieve such goals, the A.I. industry must first focus on the smaller, more practical solutions before it takes on bigger challenges--a process that involves working through countless iterations. The road to autonomous cars began with the invention of the wheel. It continued with the development of the horse-drawn carriage, the creation of the car, and hundreds of thousands of subsequent automotive advancements that spanned over a period of 133 years. It took this many years and many more models to create today's connected cars with their sophisticated telematics and advanced driver assistance systems.

Bitcoin: Cryptocurrency scammers sued by US Federal Trade Commission

The Independent - Tech

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Washington's consumer watchdog, has filed a lawsuit against two businesses it accuses of operating cryptocurrency pyramid schemes. The FTC is taking action against Bitcoin Funding Team and My7Network over what it defines as "chain referral" scams, in which participants pay upfront entry fees in order to be able to recommend others to follow suit. The companies allegedly promised customers who made an initial investment of just $100 (£71) that they could earn an $80,000 (£56,938) monthly income from doing so - although payouts seldom amounted to anything like that. The two businesses defrauded an estimated 30,000 people worldwide between them, the lawsuit alleges. "Bitcoin Funding Team's structure, which created a continual chain of recruitment and recruitment-related payments, ensured that few participants would obtain the results depicted or projected by the defendants," the FTC's complaint reads.

UK demand for AI professionals has almost tripled in three years

#artificialintelligence

Demand for professionals with artificial intelligence (AI) skills in the UK has almost tripled over the last three years, according to research. A study by job website Indeed assessed job postings across its site since 2015 and found a huge increase in demand for skills in AI and machine learning, and the number of candidates looking for jobs in this area has doubled over the same period. Check out the latest findings on how the hype around artificial intelligence could be sowing damaging confusion. Also, read a number of case studies on how enterprises are using AI to help reach business goals around the world. You forgot to provide an Email Address.

Cabinet to investigate societal impact of new technologies

#artificialintelligence

Robotics, artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality and other new technologies can both strengthen and undermine key values such as privacy, non-discrimination, human dignity (such as when care tasks are carried out by robots), human rights and the right to due process, says the Rathenau Institute. At the same time, these technologies offer new social and commercial opportunities, potential gains in efficiency and quality, and educational benefits. The government has therefore decided to commission more research into the societal effects of technological developments and to establish an inter-ministerial working group to study this issue. And the budget of the Data Protection Authority will be almost doubled. The cabinet made these decisions following proposals put forward jointly by Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Kajsa Ollongren and her ministry's state secretary Raymond Knops, State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy Mona Keijzer, Minister of Justice and Security Ferdinand Grapperhaus and Minister for Legal Protection Sander Dekker.

Beware of replicating sexism in AI, experts warn

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence could emulate human bias, including sexism, if there is no oversight on data used to create it, experts at the world's largest mobile phone fair in Barcelona warned Thursday. "We're all very aware the machines will learn the same bias as those who coded them," Emma McGuiguan, in charge of technology at consultants Accenture, said at the Mobile World Congress. AI is the science of programming machines or computers to reproduce human processes, like learning and decision making. Julie Woods-Moss, chief innovation officer at Indian mobile operator Tata Communications, said that in order to do this, a large amount of human-led data was needed. "We have to be very careful that we don't encourage AI to be biased," she said, calling on professionals in the sector to find ways to identify these biases.

Design in Tech Report 2018

#artificialintelligence

For this year's report, I took a stab at learning all the CSS/JS that I've always wanted to know, and then went after the task of making a fully responsive report. I've succeeded in doing so, and so this PDF version isn't as good as the real thing. In the next few days I will be sharing a link to the real digital experience. But for now -- enjoy this static version of the report which has a few parts that couldn't render to static form. Because ... this year's report is truly computationally designed and therefore needs to be expressed appropriately (smile). Expect a video version on my new YouTube channel "John Maeda is Learning." What can I do about it? As the marginal return on computing power (a la Moore's law) diminishes and technology is less of a differentiating factor, the value of design has entered the foreground. Five (20%) of the top cumulative-funded VC- backed ventures that have raised additional capital since 2013 are noted to have designer co-founders.

Intelligent to a Fault: When AI Screws Up, You Might Still Be to Blame

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence is already making significant inroads in taking over mundane, time-consuming tasks many humans would rather not do. The responsibilities and consequences of handing over work to AI vary greatly, though; some autonomous systems recommend music or movies; others recommend sentences in court. Even more advanced AI systems will increasingly control vehicles on crowded city streets, raising questions about safety--and about liability, when the inevitable accidents occur. But philosophical arguments over AI's existential threats to humanity are often far removed from the reality of actually building and using the technology in question. Deep learning, machine vision, natural language processing--despite all that has been written and discussed about these and other aspects of artificial intelligence, AI is still at a relatively early stage in its development.

How to Protect Yourself From an Online Dating Scam

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

Last year, more than 15,000 victims lost some $210 million in "confidence frauds" and romance scams, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The lesson: Meeting people online comes with risks. And the way to protect yourself or someone you love isn't as simple as "Don't be foolish." Smart people fall prey to scams. Scammers are really good at what they do.
