Why The EU Must Consider AI Regulations?

#artificialintelligence

Speculations are rife that the EU might soon be bringing in a new set of rules and regulations aimed at artificial intelligence developers. FREMONT, CA: After rolling out comprehensive data privacy regulations, the EU is now considering norms to regulate the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. The technology of artificial intelligence has been a revelation and is one of the most-used among all the advanced technologies. Although beneficial, there have been apprehensions regarding the potential misuse of the technology, owing to its over-reaching capabilities. These apprehensions might have been the factors driving the EU towards getting a new AI policy on the cards.

Are You Satisfied by This Partial Assignment?

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Many procedures for SAT and SAT-related problems -- in particular for those requiring the complete enumeration of satisfying truth assignments -- rely their efficiency on the detection of partial assignments satisfying an input formula. In this paper we analyze the notion of partial-assignment satisfiability -- in particular when dealing with non-CNF and existentially-quantified formulas -- raising a flag about the ambiguities and subtleties of this concept, and investigating their practical consequences. This may drive the development of more effective assignment-enumeration algorithms.

RSAC 2020: Lack of Machine Learning Laws Open Doors To Attacks

#artificialintelligence

SAN FRANCISCO โ€“ As companies quickly adopt machine learning systems, cybercriminals are close behind scheming to compromise them. That worries legal experts who say a lack of laws swing open the door for bad guys to attack systems. During a panel session at RSA Conference 2020 this week, Cristin Goodwin, the assistant general counsel with Microsoft, said the number of machine learning related U.S. court cases is a mere 52. She noted most were related to patents, workplace discrimination and even gerrymandering. Few court cases addressed actual cyberattacks on machine learning systems โ€“ demonstrating a dangerous dearth in legal precedent around the technology.

Machine learning is nearly ubiquitous in accounting operations, ERPs

#artificialintelligence

The technology is mainly used to set up touch-free processes for repetitive functions such as accounts payable and receivable. Machine learning is far more integrated into accounting, planning and forecasting operations than many professionals realize, finance technology consultants said in a CFO.com webinar. A lot of the cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) and other platforms finance teams use already have machine learning built in, and that will only increase, said Kris Murphy, principal of The Hackett Group. "It's going to get to the point where ... when you enter a forecast number, the machine learning algorithm will say, 'Last time you missed by 10%, you average a miss of 8%, maybe you should think about that number,'" said Murphy. "I believe that is where we're going to be going with machine learning."

Building vs. Buying: Which AI Approach is Best?

#artificialintelligence

Over 80% of executives believe failing to get on board with artificial intelligence (AI) now will cost their organization for the next decade, according to Vanson Bourne. AI is driving revolutionary capabilities across the enterprise with departments like sales, marketing, HR and finance leveraging the technology for some of their most essential functions. As a result, organizations have increased their investment in AI by 23% over the last 12 months. But how are they investing? There are two paths to AI investment: building solutions in-house or buying from a third-party vendor.

Introducing the OECD AI Policy Observatory

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live and work, and it has the potential to transform virtually every sector of the global economy โ€“ from healthcare and education to transport and energy systems. It holds tremendous promise for economic productivity, scientific advancements and sustainable development. Yet there are also anxieties around where the technology may lead us, including concerns that it may codify existing biases and discriminatory practices, or displace workers by accelerating automation. For governments, this presents a pressing question: how can we harness the potential of AI to improve well-being for all, while also mitigating the risks that it poses? The OECD AI Principles โ€“ the first intergovernmental standard on AI โ€“ provide a way forward.
