GitHub's Commercial AI Tool Was Built From Open Source Code

#artificialintelligence

Earlier this month, Armin Ronacher, a prominent open-source developer, was experimenting with a new code-generating tool from GitHub called Copilot when it began to produce a curiously familiar stretch of code. The lines, drawn from the source code of the 1999 video game Quake III, are infamous among programmers--a combo of little tricks that add up to some pretty basic math, imprecisely. The original Quake coders knew they were hacking. "What the fuck," one commented in the code beside an especially egregious shortcut. So it was strange for Ronacher to see such code generated by Copilot, an artificial intelligence tool that is marketed to generate code that is both novel and efficient.

Apple's Image Scanning Tool is, Well, Complicated

#artificialintelligence

At first blush, the idea of scanning images synced up to iCloud for child sexual abuse materials against the hash list of known CSAM images seems like a good idea. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse myself, I want tech companies to takes some initiative to deal with this issue. They also want to scan images on kids' phones using AI to see if kids are getting into any trouble with sending or receiving sexual material. Again, that sounds like a good thing. But, as the EFF points out, this all requires a backdoor, and backdoors, once created, almost never remain used for just one purpose.

Three Notable Applications of AI in Supreme Court

#artificialintelligence

AI in Supreme Court is, by all means, catching the eye of a huge segment of individuals, no question due to the limitless potential outcomes it offers. It absorbs, contributes just as stances difficulties to practically all disciplines including theory, psychological science, financial aspects, law, and the sociologies. AI and Machine Learning have a multiplier impact on expanding the effectiveness of any system or industry. If utilized adequately, it can bring steady change and transform the biological system of a few areas. In any case, before applying such innovation, it is important to distinguish the issues and the difficulties within every area and foster the particular modalities on how artificial intelligence will have the most elevated effect.

Activision Blizzard scandal a 'watershed moment' for women in the gaming industry

The Guardian

For women at Activision Blizzard, one of the world's most famous video game companies, showing up to work meant navigating near daily episodes of humiliation, sexual harassment, and even physical abuse, according to a bombshell lawsuit that has prompted a reckoning within the gaming industry. The claims paint a disturbing picture of life for female employees: rampant sexual harassment, gender discrimination, retaliation, and a "frat boy" workplace culture where men objectified women's bodies and openly joked about rape. The lawsuit was brought by California's department of fair employment and accuses the multi-billion dollar company โ€“ whose output includes Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush โ€“ of violating the state's civil rights and equal pay laws. The fallout has been swift and widespread. This week the company's president and its head of human resources stepped down after hundreds of employees staged a walkout and thousands signed a petition demanding a response to the scandal.

Apple announces new protections for child safety: iMessage features, iCloud Photo scanning, more

#artificialintelligence

Apple is today announcing a trio of new efforts it's undertaking to bring new protection for children to iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This includes new communications safety features in Messages, enhanced detection of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) content in iCloud, and updated knowledge information for Siri and Search. One thing Apple is emphasizing is that its new program is ambitious, but that "protecting children is an important responsibility." With that in mind, Apple says that its efforts will "evolve and expand over time." The first announcement today is a new communication safety feature in the Messages app.

In a world first, South Africa grants patent to an artificial intelligence system

#artificialintelligence

At first glance, a recently granted South African patent relating to a "food container based on fractal geometry" seems fairly mundane. The innovation in question involves interlocking food containers that are easy for robots to grasp and stack. On closer inspection, the patent is anything but mundane. That's because the inventor is not a human being โ€“ it is an artificial intelligence (AI) system called DABUS. DABUS (which stands for "device for the autonomous bootstrapping of unified sentience") is an AI system created by Stephen Thaler, a pioneer in the field of AI and programming.

Advances in application of Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Scientists have recorded major breakthroughs in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health, weather forecasting and other areas of science. Scientists at the University of Houston's (UH's) Air Quality Forecasting and Modeling Lab have developed a new artificial intelligence system that could lead to improved ways to control high ozone problems and even contribute to solutions for climate change issues. The breakthrough, published online in the scientific journal, Scientific Reports-Nature, showed ozone levels in the earth's troposphere (the lowest level of the atmosphere) can now be forecast with accuracy up to two weeks in advance, a remarkable improvement over current systems that can accurately predict ozone levels only three days ahead. Professor of atmospheric chemistry and AI deep learning at UH's College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Yunsoo Choi, said: "This was very challenging. Nobody had done this previously. I believe we are the first to try to forecast surface ozone levels two weeks in advance."

Injured In A Car Accident? Your Legal Adversary Is Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Attorney Jack Cohen knows both sides of the blame and claim game. He's spent nearly 40 years practicing law, much of it trying injury suits for insurance companies. But he's also written a novel called "Bad Faith," which tells the story from the victim's side. Cohen knows his limitations--you can't fight artificial intelligence (AI). You have to work with it.

At Blizzard, groping, free-flowing booze and fear of retaliation tainted 'magical' workplace

Washington Post - Technology News

In interviews, 17 current and former Blizzard Entertainment employees across the United States and Europe shared accounts of a workplace that didn't take complaints to human resources seriously and normalized misconduct. Many of them spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. Many workers told The Post the lawsuit allegations did not surprise them and were reflective of a culture where victims feared retaliation for speaking up. According to employees interviewed for this story, the culture impacted not only women, but men and marginalized genders, too. Employees with diverse backgrounds told The Post they had faced harassment and misconduct from co-workers and reported it to human resources, but it led to no punishment nor produced any change.
