From Radar to AI: The future of conservation

#artificialintelligence

The phone is not lost, quite the opposite. Incongruous but invaluable, the phone is part of a network of devices placed throughout the forest to listen for the telltale sounds of illegal logging. Amidst the rustle of leaves, the scampering of critters, and the steady drip of moisture, the sound of a lorry or chainsaw is an alarm bell that can bring forest rangers hurrying to the scene. It's just one of the ways that technology is helping conservationists in the fight to protect wildlife and the planet. The advance of technology is often seen as a risk for the environment: From the invention of the plough to carve the landscape, through the industrial revolution, to the electronic age's thirst for Earth's limited resources.

French plans for AI surveillance during Olympics are dangerous

Al Jazeera

This month, French lawmakers are expected to pass legislation for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which, for the first time in France's history, will permit mass video surveillance powered by artificial intelligence (AI) systems. When governments embark on the slippery slope towards the expansion of surveillance powers, it has damning consequences for fundamental human rights, including the rights to privacy, equality and non-discrimination, as well as freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Under the guise of ensuring security and fighting terrorism, the French authorities will be able to monitor the movements of millions of people from around the world, whether they are heading to or near stadiums, or using public transportation leading in or out of the premises of the grand sporting event. The need for security during the game is understandable, but transparency and legal justification are needed at every step of the way. Any proposal concerning security must comply with fundamental rights.

Generative artificial intelligence: Rise of the machines – GIS Reports

#artificialintelligence

The latest technological advances suggest that the "AI revolution" will deliver socioeconomic turmoil, massive wealth redistribution – or both. Recent months have seen a lot of conversation about the dangers and opportunities presented by the latest advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Most of this has been stirred up by ChatGPT, a generative AI chatbot created by the Microsoft-backed OpenAI and launched to the public in late 2022. The software's impressive capabilities – formulating articulate, (usually) accurate responses to complex questions, and creating text often indistinguishable from that of a human writer – have reignited debates about "the robots taking over." Much of the public appears divided into two camps: the technophiles, excited about "upgrading" our already symbiotic relationship with computers; and the modern-day Luddites, foes of progress who fear these new machines just as their predecessors feared textile mechanization.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce calls for AI regulation

#artificialintelligence

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Thursday called for regulation of artificial intelligence technology to ensure it does not hurt growth or become a national security risk, a departure from the business lobbying group's typical anti-regulatory stance. While there is little in terms of proposed legislation for AI, the fast-growing artificial intelligence program ChatGPT that has drawn praise for its ability to write answers quickly to a wide range of queries has raised U.S. lawmakers' concerns about its impact on national security and education. The Chamber report argues policymakers and business leaders must quickly ramp up their efforts to establish a "risk-based regulatory framework" that will ensure AI is deployed responsibly. It added that AI is projected to add $13 trillion to global economic growth by 2030 and that it has made important contributions such as easing hospital nursing shortages and mapping wildfires to speed emergency management officials' response. The report emphasized the need to be ready for the technology's looming ubiquity and potential dangers.

'Why I can't get excited about AI art'

#artificialintelligence

Can you get excited about artificial intelligence (AI)? When I asked ChatGPT who my favourite artist was, it said I'd never publicly expressed a preference, because as an art historian I don't do "subjective opinions". Evidently, ChatGPT doesn't subscribe to The Art Newspaper. Even if it gave the correct answer--Van Dyck--I'd still not be excited. In a famous episode of the 1960s TV series The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan's character is presented with an all-knowing computer which, he is told, will make man redundant.

Artificial Intelligence is Revolutionizing Marketing. Here's What the Transformation Means for the Industry

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) has started transforming every aspect of our professional and personal lives. The marketing industry is not immune to this digital transformation, with leading brands starting to embrace the opportunities the technology brings. Gaining a better understanding of customer behavior is one of the core benefits of AI in marketing. For years, marketers have gathered and analyzed data about customer behavior. Their goal has remained largely unchanged -- extrapolate patterns and predict which products and services will be most popular with a certain audience.
