A defence source has told BBC defence correspondent Jonathon Beale, that Britain has already used a ground based system to jam or block the satellite communications of a hostile state. But the board admitted substantial donations were still needed, with $18bn pledged but only $280m handed over so far. The board estimates full recovery and reconstruction will require about $71.4bn over the next decade. Lidl must stop selling copycat versions of Birkenstock's famous sandals in the Netherlands, a Dutch court has ruled. The discount supermarket chain faces a fine of €5,000 (£4,200) per day if it fails to comply and must also hand over sales data to Birkenstock, according to the ruling. Lidl must also compensate Birkenstock and pay its legal fees, with the amount to be decided in separate court decisions. Birkenstock said the judgement sent a clear message that copycats must not be allowed to free-ride on [our] creativity and innovation. The BBC has reached out to Lidl for comment.

A US-China AI Hotline Won't Be Ready for a While As the US and China race to become the dominant power in the AI industry, the countries also appear to be figuring out ways to communicate on national security issues. As US president Donald Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping prepare to meet in Washington for a state dinner at the White House on Thursday, AI has become a top priority . Tech executives from OpenAI and Nvidia have confirmed their attendance at the dinner, as a number of key agenda items are on the table. Chief among them is a US proposal to establish an AI notification system with China, akin to the Cold War hotline with Moscow, which would allow each country to alert the other about national security issues related to AI. Treasury secretary Scott Bessent first announced the notification system on Sunday with Chinese vice premier He Lifeng. But for all the high-level progress, Trump administration officials tell they expect it to still take a number of weeks to finalize an agreement, even if they are optimistic that the hotline could be in place before the year's end.

United States Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Greg Casar of Texas introduced a new bill that would impose sweeping restrictions on the artificial intelligence industry, including banning the development of what is called artificial superintelligence. The legislation, introduced on Wednesday, comes weeks after top AI industry researchers issued dire warnings that the technology could wipe out humanity within the next decade, according to a wave of industry insiders. The legislation would also call for a temporary pause on the development of advanced AI systems until a regulatory body that can oversee and develop safety standards is put in place, as well as establishing a cabinet-level department called the Department of Artificial Intelligence that would oversee the industry. The proposed agency would be tasked with regulating what are called frontier models -- a term referring to the most advanced AI models in development. The agency would ensure the models are not dangerous, and it would be empowered to remove the models from circulation if they do, in fact, become dangerous and supervise their destruction.
