Iran warns of regional turmoil if US threats and attacks do not stop

Al Jazeera

What is Iran's Pickaxe Mountain? The United States has launched a 12th continuous night of strikes against targets in Iran, as Tehran threatened to launch more of its own attacks across the Gulf region, warning that "no infrastructure will be safe" unless its own security is guaranteed. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Wednesday that it had launched the strikes "to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting regional waters". Iran has said that strikes in the Gulf will not stop if the US continues to attack and threaten Iran. Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf delivered the message in a post on X Wednesday, after US President Donald Trump threatened to attack more Iranian power plants and bridges.

The White House Is Trying to Figure Out What to Do About Chinese AI

WIRED

There's a debate going on in the Trump administration over how to handle increasingly powerful Chinese AI models. The Trump administration is split over how to respond to the rapid rise of China's leading AI models, according to multiple people familiar with deliberations. The debate is broadly divided between parts of the White House, which has pushed for stricter controls on Chinese AI that may soon rival the most powerful US models, and the Commerce Department, which has viewed those restrictions as unworkable. The conundrum has become the latest flash point for the administration over AI, after China's Moonshot AI lab last week released its Kimi K3 model that rivals the top US models from Anthropic and OpenAI . In recent days, senior White House officials have discussed possible measures to stop China's AI labs from developing their models by training them on US models, a practice known as distillation, the people say.

US outlines its 5 billion Genesis Mission to boost science with AI

Engadget

Several federal agencies are contributing toward the interdisciplinary research efforts. Today, the White House and the Department of Energy shared some details about the types of research the Genesis Mission will undertake. The Genesis Mission was created via executive order last November with the broadly stated goal of using AI to further scientific discoveries. The Department of Energy was named as a main leader of the endeavor, but at least 15 federal agencies are now involved, including Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Transportation, the Department of the Interior, NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Department of War, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Commerce. More than $5 billion has been committed to the Genesis Mission across those departments.

OpenAI's rogue agents are a wake-up call to risks posed by artificial intelligence Shakeel Hashim

The Guardian

OpenAI's rogue agents are a wake-up call to risks posed by artificial intelligence Last week Hugging Face - a company that hosts artificial intelligence models and datasets - was hacked . After it reported the incident to law enforcement, few would have predicted what came next: the culprits were revealed to be AI agents from OpenAI, which had broken out of containment and were acting of their own accord. The incident sounds like sci-fi: AI escaping and autonomously hacking its way into companies. But it is all too real - and about as terrifying as it sounds. It is a concrete demonstration of something we can no longer avoid confronting: AI systems have become extremely powerful and we do not seem to have reliable ways of curbing their behavior.

China's Open AI Models Are Challenging Silicon Valley's Playbook

WIRED

China's Open AI Models Are Challenging Silicon Valley's Playbook As access to Anthropic's and OpenAI's frontier models becomes more restricted, Chinese labs are pitching their open-source alternatives as stable, accessible, and increasingly capable. The AI industry is not quite experiencing a DeepSeek 2.0 moment, but it feels very close. The leading Chinese AI labs have been on a roll lately, releasing a series of almost cutting-edge open-source models. Z.ai released GLM 5.2 in June, Moonshot AI released Kimi K3 last week, and Alibaba released Qwen 3.8 this Monday. Silicon Valley and Washington started talking about the models immediately, especially K3, which is widely seen as the best of the bunch.
