How do you stop invasive lionfish? Maybe with a robotic zapper

PBS NewsHour

"The problem with the lionfish is it's like Darwin's nightmare," Oliver Steeds said, standing on the deck of the Baseline Explorer. A late afternoon sun dwindled over the 146-foot research vessel, as it sat anchored in St. George's Harbour on Bermuda's northeast corner. Licks of ocean water dried off a gold-plated submersible parked next to Steeds, the director of a deep ocean exploration project called the Nekton mission, as he recounted the basics of the invasive species. "Lionfish are chowing their way through the food chain, because they don't have any predators," Steeds said. Map of the lionfish spread based on sightings from 1985 to 2015. The first lionfish sightings occurred off the Florida coast in the mid-1980s.

Taming the populists

Al Jazeera

In many Western democracies, right-wing populists, energised by self-proclaimed victories over "establishment elites", are doubling down on the claim that globalisation lies at the root of many citizens' problems. For those whose living standards have stagnated or declined in recent decades, even as political leaders have touted free trade and capital flows as the recipe for increased prosperity, the argument holds considerable appeal. So it must be addressed head on. Of course, economic grievances alone do not fuel anti-globalisation sentiment; populism has emerged even in countries with low unemployment and rising incomes. But such grievances provide the kernel of truth that populist leaders need to attract support, which they then attempt to secure with distortions and exaggerations.

iPhone 7: Dropping headphone jack would be a huge mistake, says Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

Domino's partners with Flirtey for pizza drone delivery

ZDNet

Domino's and Flirtey have launched the first commercial drone delivery service, aiming to soon deliver pizza via remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) straight to a customer's front door. Although headquartered in Brisbane, Australia, Domino's has chosen to kick off the DRU Drone initiative in Auckland, New Zealand, as the country's current regulations allow businesses to utilise unmanned aircraft. The demonstration was conducted under Civil Aviation Rules Part 101 and marks a final step in Flirtey's approval process. Domino's said it then expects to be able to trial store-to-door drone deliveries from a selected Domino's New Zealand stores with flights to customer homes tabled for later this year. "We are planning a phased trial approach which is based on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) granting approval, as both Domino's and Flirtey are learning what is possible with the drone delivery for our products, but this isn't a pie in the sky idea. It's about working with the regulators and Flirtey to make this a reality for our customers," Domino's Group CEO and managing director Don Meij, said.

This Earth-like planet orbits the Sun's nearest neighbor every 11 days

PBS NewsHour

This artist's impression shows the planet Proxima b orbiting the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Solar System. The double star Alpha Centauri AB also appears in the image between the planet and Proxima itself. Proxima b is a little more massive than the Earth and orbits in the habitable zone around Proxima Centauri, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on its surface. It was just over 20 years ago--a blink of a cosmic eye--that astronomers found the first planets orbiting stars other than our Sun. All these new worlds were gas-shrouded giants like Jupiter or Saturn and utterly inhospitable to life as we know it--but for years each discovery was dutifully reported as front-page news, while scientists and the public alike dreamed of a day when we would find a habitable world. An Earth-like place with plentiful surface water, neither frozen nor vaporized but in the liquid state so essential to life. Back then the safe bet was to guess that the discovery of such a planet would only come after many decades, and that when a promising new world's misty shores materialized on the other side of our telescopes, it would prove too faraway and faint to study in any detail.

FAA sued for lack of drone privacy rules

ZDNet

When the Federal Aviation Association issued its first formal rules governing the use of commercial drones, it should have included some privacy regulations, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) is arguing in a lawsuit against the agency. The FAA has so far left privacy matters up to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). However, EPIC argues that, since Congress directed the FAA to develop "comprehensive" rules that "safely" integrate drones into US airspace, it's obligated to consider privacy issues. The advocacy group is asking the DC Circuit Court of Appeals to overrule the drone regulations and compel the FAA to conduct further proceedings. Earlier in the year, the NTIA issued drone privacy guidelines, which were developed with the help of privacy groups and businesses. However, they're completely voluntary guidelines, and some have argued they're too narrow in scope and plagued by loopholes.

China unveils first photos of Mars rover that it plans to send to Red Planet in 2020

The Independent - Tech

China has revealed the first pictures of the rover it is going to send to mars in 2020. The newly-unveiled little robot will explore the planet for three months, according to state media, and it is the latest part of China's ambitious and expensive space programme. China became the third country to put a man in space, after the US and Russia, in 2003. Since then it has been aiming at other achievements in its space programme. From the International Space Station, Expedition 42 Flight Engineer Terry W. Virts took this photograph of the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Gulf Coast at sunset This image of an area on the surface of Mars, approximately 1.5 by 3 kilometers in size, shows frosted gullies on a south-facing slope within a crater.
