Orbital ATK resumes flight from Wallops Island, Va., in a stunning launch visible for miles
Orbital ATK returned to flight Monday evening by christening a refurbished Virginia launchpad with a smooth rocket liftoff two years after an explosion caused 15 million in damage. Flying an updated Antares rocket with new engines, the company sent its unmanned Cygnus spacecraft into orbit at 7:45 p.m., chasing down the International Space Station on a cargo resupply mission for NASA. The spacecraft is scheduled to reach the station Sunday to deliver 5,100 pounds of cargo and supplies to the astronauts there. The highly-anticipated launch, visible across much of the Mid-Atlantic, was full of drama and tension for Dulles-based Orbital ATK, which lost another unmanned Antares in a massive fireball two years ago. The problem then was with the rocket's engines--prompting the switch to the Russian-made RD-181.
Modeling community structure and topics in dynamic text networks
Henry, Teague, Banks, David, Chai, Christine, Owens-Oas, Derek
Dynamic text networks have been widely studied in recent years, primarily because the Internet stores textual data in a way that allows links between different documents. Articles on the Wikipedia (Hoffman et al., 2010), citation networks in journal articles (Moody, 2004), and linked blog posts (Latouche et al., 2011) are examples of dynamic text networks, or networks of documents that are generated over time. But each application has idiosyncratic features, such as the structure of the links and the nature of the time varying documents, so analysis typically requires bespoke models that directly address those aspects.
How to make a UFO of your own
It could be mistaken for a hovering UFO, but this DIY flashlight consists of ten separate 100-watt LEDs mounted on a Freefly Alta drone. Daniel Riley of Stratus Productions designed'the world's brightest flashlight' last year and recently updated the creation with new lights that are much more accurate and brighter. The filmmaker replaced the cheap eBay LEDs with Yuji high CRI LED chips, which illuminates the night sky with a flying spotlight. Daniel Riley designed'the world's brightest flashlight' last year and recently updated by replacing the cheap eBay LEDs with Yuji high CRI LED chips, which are bright enough to light up the sky in the dead of night Riley's original creation was awarded the title of'world's brightest flashlight' in 2015 by the Guinness Book of World Records. The design is an ultra-powerful 1000W light that puts out a whopping 900000 lumens. Recently, he replaced the cheap eBay LEDs with Yuji high CRI LED chips, which are bright enough to light up the sky in the dead of night.
Why I'm backing Deep Drumpf, and you should too
This year's U.S. presidential election has been pretty nutty. An algorithm that spews incoherent and outrageous soundbites might not even be the worst candidate in the running. Just such an algorithm, called Deep Drumpf, has indeed entered the race. Built using a deep-learning algorithm that's been fed the transcripts of numerous Donald Trump speeches, it automatically generates tweets that seem remarkably similar to many of those issued by the candidate himself. Free trade can be wonderful if you have the power of nuclear weapons.
Universal Basic Income: An Utopian Reaction to A Dystopian Scenario - Enterprise Irregulars
Harper Lee published her Pulitzer Prize winning book, To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960. A couple of years later, Gregory Peck won an Academy for Best Actor in his role as Atticus in the movie adaptation. What many do not realize is Lee was given a grant by friends to take off work for a year and concentrate on writing the book. Her story has fired the imagination of many who would like all of us to find similar friends and get a similar grant. Imagine what wonderful things we could produce.
Pundits Vs. Machine: Who Did Better At Predicting Campaign Controversies?
What happens when two human political journalists compete against a computer over which can do the best job predicting the issues that will dominate the news in the presidential election? Well, you are about to find out. The two humans and the computers each got to predict five issues per presidential candidate that would get the most coverage in the news and on the blogs between Sept. 12 and Oct. 12. (The time frame covers only a few days of the release of the Donald Trump's lewd comments about women. So the final list isn't dominated by that controversy.) The two humans are Simon Maloy of Salon.com and Jonah Goldberg of the National Review.
Flipboard on Flipboard
The best books about creativity can simultaneously spark new ideas in the reader while also giving them a compelling narrative to follow. As the White House staff polishes the silver for what is likely to be the last state dinner of the Obama administration, it's worth taking a look back at how the first couple -- the youngest to occupy the White House since JFK and Jackie -- has shaped the institution of the state dinner. We talk a lot about the U.S. publishers who are on Flipboard, but we've also been busy in Europe, where our readership has surpassed 20 million monthly active readers. For Syrian students now living in Turkey, the path through higher-education is far from smooth. For the first time in history, Washington has accused a foreign government of trying to influence the US election.
Gartner: Artificial intelligence, algorithms and smart software at the heart of big network changes
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced algorithms are at the heart of an emerging digital world. That was one of the chiefs components of Gartner's Peter Sondergaard, senior vice president and global head of Research opening remarks at today's Gartner Symposium/ITxpo show in Orlando. More on Network World: Will future developments in the realm of Artificial Intelligence be like the wild west or a more controlled situation? "CIOs will participate in the building of a new digital platform with intelligence at the center," Sondergaard said told a crowd of more than 8,000 CIOs and IT leaders. "The new competitive differentiator is understanding the customer's intent through advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence. Creating new experiences that solve problems customers didn't realize they had."
White House: A.I. will be critical driver of U.S. economy
The White House sees artificial intelligence as an increasingly critical technology that can fight cyberattacks, upgrade weapons of war, improve health care and even unclog traffic for the commute home. However, the Obama administration also expects that A.I. will reduce low-level jobs and create security and ethical issues. With critical pros and cons looming, the federal government wants to work with the private sector and academia to guide A.I. in a positive direction, according to a recently released report, Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence. The report was prepared by the National Science and Technology Council's subcommittee on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. "A.I. can be a major driver of economic growth and social progress, if industry, civil society, government, and the public work together to support development of the technology, with thoughtful attention to its potential and to managing its risks," the report states.
Briefly Noted
Unfolding across four decades via dozens of characters, this satirical novel takes aim at several targets. When, in 2012, Faye Andreson-Anderson pelts a right-wing Wyoming governor with rocks, in the lead-up to his Presidential bid, she achieves "meme status." She also becomes newly present for her son, Samuel, who tries to leverage the assault into a best-selling memoir. His research leads him deep into his mother's childhood and his own. Hill astutely skewers the media for the way it packages experience--Samuel's publisher claims to be an "interest maker" specializing in "multimodal cross-platform synergy."
