After 23 years in office, the notorious Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio (R) might not win re-election. The latest Arizona Republic/Morrison/Cronkite News poll of the Arizona county sheriff's race shows Arpaio nearly 15 points behind Democrat Paul Penzone, 45.9 percent to 31.1 percent. Arpaio, who calls himself "America's toughest sheriff," made national headlines last year when he spoke out in favor of Donald Trump and joined him in the mission to "seek the truth" about President Obama's birth certificate. Arpaio's massive slip is likely due -- at least in part -- to voters' widespread opposition to building a border wall and deporting all undocumented immigrants, both proposals Arpaio supports. The poll found that 30.8 percent of the county's voters strongly disagree with mass deportation, while 41.7 percent disagree.

Data is pouring into the hands of cancer researchers, thanks to improvements in imaging, models and understanding of genetics. Today the data from a single patient's tumor in a clinical trial can add up to one terabyte--the equivalent of 130,000 books. But we don't yet have the tools to efficiently process the mountain of genetic data to make more precise predictions for therapy. And it's needed: treating cancer remains a complex moving target. We can't yet say precisely how a specific tumor will react to any given drug, and as a patient is treated, cancer cells can continue to evolve, making the initial therapy less effective.

Stephen Hawking has warned artificial intelligence could be the greatest disaster in human history if it is not properly managed. The world famous physicist said AI could bring about serious peril in the creation of powerful autonomous weapons and novel ways for those in power to oppress and control the masses. Hawking suggested AI could be the last event in the history of our civilisation if humanity did not learn to cope with the risks it posed. But the cosmologist and professor also said AI could have great benefits and potentially erase poverty and disease. Under new legislation, thousands of gay and bisexual men will receive posthumous pardons from the UK government. Dubbed the "Alan Turing Law," an amendment to the Policing and Crime Bill will rectify old convictions for consensual same-sex relationships, which were decriminalised in England and Wales in 1967. The policy builds on the case of Alan Turing, a brilliant cryptographer who helped Britain and the Allied Powers decode messages during World War II. Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts and died in 1954 from cyanide poisoning. In 2009, the British government officially apologised for his treatment, before a posthumous pardon was granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013.

On Oct. 13, 2016, the White House hosted the "White House Frontiers Conference" (#WHFrontiers) on the #FutureofAI. The White House had also released two reports on artificial intelligence ("AI") the previous day: (1) Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence on the current state of AI, the existing and potential applications of AI, and the societal and public policy questions relevant to AI, and (2) The National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan for Federally-funded research and development in AI. As stated in the Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence report, "Future AI systems could perform predictive analytics to anticipate cyberattacks by generating dynamic threat models from available data sources that are voluminous, ever-changing, and often incomplete." To this end, a representative from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) at the #WHFrontiers conference highlighted the "promise of artificial intelligence" in view of the recent Cyber Grand Challenge. The DARPA representative stated that, with artificial intelligence, cyber-attacks could be addressed in minutes and not hours, days, or months.

Mission controllers appear to have lost contact with a tiny craft that was Europe's big hope for Mars exploration. The paddling pool-sized "Schiaparelli" lander appeared to have made its way safely through the harsh atmosphere of Mars and onto its surface. But something appears to have gone wrong while it did so – and mission controllers are now unable to speak with it. The lander sent communications to its mothership, the Trace Gas Orbiter, on its way down. But the signal was lost before touchdown.
