Trump Deep Nightmare: Google's Deep Dream A.I. run against a Donald Trump speech
Google's image recognition software, which uses artificial neural networks to simulate an actual human brain, is very capable of dreaming . When Google engineers fed photos of random objects to a network taught to identify images of animals, the network "dreamed" of disturbingly distorted dogs and other hybrid creatures, set against a kaleidoscopic backdrop of clouds and mountains. Shortly after publishing the outcome of their experiments, Google developers made the code for the "DeepDream" software public, enabling anyone to feed images into the machine and see what comes out. Fear and Loathing, which stars Johnny Depp as a drug-using hedonist, is basically just one long acid trip. Now that none of us are going to get any sleep tonight, here's a two-minute clip from the movie that was fed through the software:
Meet your housemates: Incredible images show the PARASITES hiding in your home
Psoroptes cuniculi mites are non-burrowing parasites that chew the skin in the ear canal of rabbits. Kitchen sponges can accumulate food and microbes when used for long periods of time and are not thoroughly cleaned. Millions of dust mites inhabit the home, feeding on dead human skin that are common in house dust. Pseudoscorpions are generally beneficial to humans since they prey on moth larvae, carpet beetle larvae, booklice and mites. NY Governor Cuomo signs bill outlawing online scalpers
Getting tickets to Beyoncรฉ and Hamilton is already hard enough but it can be nearly impossible if you're competing against the automated purchasers used by 21st century scalpers. These so-called "ticket bots" are specifically designed to get around the strict per-customer purchase limits on sites like TicketMaster and LiveNation, allowing a small handful of individuals to buy a lion's share of a show and then offer them on the resale market for a massive profit. But that's no longer the case in New York where, governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed legislation banning these robots. "It's predatory," Governor Cuomo said at a press conference yesterday. "It's wrong and, with this legislation, we are taking an important step towards restoring fairness and equity back to this multi-billion dollar industry."
Meet the $1 Billion Startup Busting Cybersecurity's Greatest Myth
In 2011, cybersecurity researcher and entrepreneur Stuart McClure spent his last year working at McAfee, as the company's global chief technology officer, apologizing a lot. McClure said hackers were slipping into McAfee customer networks and each subsequent breach seemed worse than the last. McClure would have to meet with each of the big McAfee corporate customers to explain why the software failed and at the end of each meeting someone would ask McClure the same question: "'What type of security software do you use on your machine to prevent cyber attacks?'" The customers would then wait, pens poised above a piece of paper to jot down the long list of layer after layer of high-end software that the global CTO of a multimillion-dollar security company would surely recommend. "I would tell them I only trust my brain and my hand, because there are no new ways to breach a network," says McClure of his former employer, which is now owned by Intel.
Watch this 'gun' take down a flying drone
Government agencies, airport operators and law enforcement agencies looking to ground drones can now put the flying devices in their crosshairs. A company called DroneShield has introduced a 13-pound, rifle-shaped jammer that it says can take down drones from a distance as far as 1.2 miles away. The DroneGun isn't meant for drone hobbyists or their vengeful neighbors. The company says it could thwart drones carrying explosives intended to carry out a civilian or military attack, or stop those that venture illegally into restricted airspace or onto prohibited property. The gun's effect is not exactly obvious.

VA to employ artificial intelligence, precision medicine for veterans
The Department of Veterans Affairs will work with Flow Health to build a medical knowledge graph to inform decision-making and train artificial intelligence to personalize care plans. The objective of the 5-year partnership, Flow Health executives said in a statement, is to understand the common elements that make certain people susceptible to particular diseases, to pinpoint effective treatments and identify possible side effects in order to inform care decisions. VA and Flow Health's work will entail integrating large volumes of data in the quest to discover relationships between genomes and phenotypes. The goal is to learn what every gene variant means, to identify disease risk, to make more precise diagnoses and to suggest individualized treatments. "Our mission is to advance healthcare by applying the latest artificial intelligence techniques to improve the detection, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases," Flow Health CEO Alex Meshkin said in a statement. Flow Health is building a knowledge graph of medicine and genomics comprising more than 30 petabytes of longitudinal clinical data drawn from VA records on 22 million veterans spanning more than 20 years.
Automated Car Advocates Welcome Chao As Trump's Pick For Transportation
Elaine Chao, President-elect Donald Trump's choice for Transportation Secretary, stands with her husband Republican Senator Mitch McConnell at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July. News that Elaine Chao, a former U.S. Labor Secretary and wife of Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, has been selected as the next Transportation Secretary appears to be a welcome development for the companies backing technology to automate cars and trucks. Chao, who was a Deputy Secretary of Transportation for President George H.W. Bush and led Labor for George W. Bush, is among the more familiar Washington officials named to President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet, with a career in federal agencies stretching back 30 years. The Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets advocacy group, whose members include Google, Ford, Uber, Lyft and Volvo, wasted little time reacting to the selection. "We congratulate Elaine Chao on her nomination as Secretary of Transportation, and we welcome the opportunity to work with her on bringing the safety and mobility benefits of fully self-driving vehicles to America's roads and highways," David Strickland, the coalition's general counsel said in a statement.
Google's training AI to catch diabetic blindness before it's too late
Diabetes is no joke, regardless of what Wilford Brimley memes you've seen. The disease's associated foot ulcers can lead to amputation of the limb while diabetic retinopathy (DR) can rob people of their sight. Some 415 million diabetics worldwide are at risk of this visual affliction and many of those living with it in the developing world lack sufficient health care access to treat it. That's why Google is training its deep learning AI to spot DR before it becomes a problem -- and without the help of an on-site doctor. Since the disease is most readily diagnosed by examining a picture of the back of the eye, the Google team has spent the past few years developing a dataset of 128,000 individual images, each examined by 3-7 ophthalmologists from a panel of 54.
