The Bittersweet Sweepstakes to Build an AI That Destroys Fake News
Autonomous 18-wheelers are now driving the highways. Coffee table gadgets are recognizing spoken English nearly as well as humans. Smartphones apps instantly translate conversations between people speaking as many as nine different languages. But for Dean Pomerleau, none of this is all that surprising. Pomerleau built a self-driving car way back in 1989, when the first George Bush was president, and it navigated private roads using a neural network, the same AI technology that underpins modern gadgetry like the Amazon Echo and Microsoft Translator.
Moon lava tubes below the surface could be large enough for human colonies
Could we live INSIDE the moon? Stable tubes up to three miles wide could exist under the moon's surface These networks of caverns could be used to provide shelter for lunar bases Sub-lunarean bases could avoid the hazards associated with living on the surface, including meteor showers and increased radiation Stable tubes up to three miles wide could exist under the moon's surface Networks of lava tubes which snake under the moon's surface suggests they could be larger and more stable than previously thought. The large caverns are thought to have been formed from lava flows which have dried out. Scientists have found a way to tap into... Ford wants to use drones to guide its self-driving cars:... Nintendo Switch console could work with VR headset in new patent
Nintendo Switch may feature virtual reality: Patent hints that the console could slot into a VR headset when in'portable mode' A patent illustration suggests that the console's handheld screen would be slotted into VR headset, while the user would use the detachable hand controllers to play. 'The touch panel may sense position, pressure or other characteristics of touch,' says the patent. 'In the present embodiment, the touch panel is of a type (e.g. the capacitive type) that enables a multi-touch input'. Ford wants to use drones to guide its self-driving cars:... How Google's search algorithm spreads false information with a rightwing bias
Google's search algorithm appears to be systematically promoting information that is either false or slanted with an extreme rightwing bias on subjects as varied as climate change and homosexuality. Following a recent investigation by the Observer, which uncovered that Google's search engine prominently suggests neo-Nazi websites and antisemitic writing, the Guardian has uncovered a dozen additional examples of biased search results. Google's search algorithm and its autocomplete function prioritize websites that, for example, declare that climate change is a hoax, being gay is a sin, and the Sandy Hook mass shooting never happened. The increased scrutiny on the algorithms of Google – which removed antisemitic and sexist autocomplete phrases after the recent Observer investigation – comes at a time of tense debate surrounding the role of fake news in building support for conservative political leaders, particularly US President-elect Donald Trump. Facebook has faced significant backlash for its role in enabling widespread dissemination of misinformation, and data scientists and communication experts have argued that rightwing groups have found creative ways to manipulate social media trends and search algorithms.
Machine Learning Will Change What We Value
When we examine and value companies, we use a lens that is more than five hundred years old. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), which dates back to a Venetian Friar who lived in 1500 AD, has long been the determinant of what we how society measures value. According to this now global standard, things and money are valuable assets. People and ideas, and their development, are expenses. This means that investments such as education, healthcare, training, and research actually eat away at value creation.

Threat rising of 'nightmare scenario' hacking attack on nuke plant, U.N. warns
UNITED NATIONS – The "nightmare scenario" is rising for a hacking attack on a nuclear power plant's computer system that causes the uncontrolled release of radiation, the United Nations' deputy chief warned Thursday. Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson told a Security Council meeting that extremists and "vicious nonstate groups" are actively seeking weapons of mass destruction "and these weapons are increasingly accessible." Nonstate actors can already create mass disruption using cybertechnologies -- and hacking a nuclear plant would be a "nightmare scenario," he said. The open council meeting focused on ways to stop the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons by extremist groups and criminals. Members unanimously approved a resolution to strengthen the work of the council committee monitoring what countries are doing to prevent "nonstate actors" from acquiring or using weapons of mass destruction, known as WMDs.
