Study reveals bot-on-bot editing wars raging on Wikipedia's pages

The Guardian

For many it is no more than the first port of call when a niggling question raises its head. Found on its pages are answers to mysteries from the fate of male anglerfish, the joys of dorodango, and the improbable death of Aeschylus. But beneath the surface of Wikipedia lies a murky world of enduring conflict. A new study from computer scientists has found that the online encyclopedia is a battleground where silent wars have raged for years. Since Wikipedia launched in 2001, its millions of articles have been ranged over by software robots, or simply "bots", that are built to mend errors, add links to other pages, and perform other basic housekeeping tasks.

SpaceX makes good on space station delivery a little late

Daily Mail - Science & tech

SpaceX made good on a 250-mile-high delivery at the International Space Station on Thursday, after fixing a navigation problem that held up the shipment a day. Everything went smoothly the second time around as the station astronauts captured the SpaceX Dragon cargo ship as the two craft sailed over Australia. On Wednesday, a GPS system error prevented the capsule from getting close enough to be grabbed by the station's big robot arm. In China, you can pay for goods just by showing your face

@machinelearnbot

Shortly after walking through the door at Face, a Chinese startup valued at roughly a billion dollars, I see my face, unshaven and looking a bit jet-lagged, flash up on a large screen near the entrance. Having been added to a database, my face now provides automatic access to the building. It can also be used to monitor my movements through each room inside. As I tour the offices of Face (pronounced "face plus plus"), located in a suburb of Beijing, I see it appear on several more screens, automatically captured from countless angles by the company's software. On one screen a video shows the software tracking 83 different points on my face simultaneously.

SpaceX Dragon capsule delivers supplies to International Space Station

Los Angeles Times

SpaceX's Dragon capsule successfully attached to the International Space Station early Thursday, a day after aborting its first attempt. NASA confirmed on its TV service that the capsule, carrying nearly 5,500 pounds of supplies and research materials, was "captured" by astronauts operating the station's robotic arm at 2:44 a.m. NASA spokesman Rob Navias called the Dragon's approach to the station "flawless." "After an aborted rendezvous attempt on Wednesday, today was smooth sailing all the way along," he said on NASA-TV. SpaceX, which is based in Hawthorne and whose full name is Space Exploration Technologies Corp., launched the capsule atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday.

UK government finally draws up laws for autonomous cars

Engadget

Ever since the idea of autonomous of vehicles began appearing on the roadmaps of major car makers, the UK government has made it clear that Britain can provide a strong platform for them to develop and test what they've built. Some projects, like the Lutz Pathfinder pod, are already underway, but questions have remained over who will be liable when autonomous modes are engaged on public roads. The 2016 Queen's Speech included a "Modern Transport Bill" that set out what needed to be done to support the introduction of driverless cars in the coming years. The document, which called for new and updated legislation, has now been worked on and finalised as the Vehicle Technology and Aviation Bill. In it, the government lists a number of proposals regarding how self-driving cars should be insured and suggests new rules requiring petrol stations (like Shell) and businesses to install more charging points for electric and hydrogen-powered cars.

UK self-driving car insurance rules outlined by government

The Independent - Tech

Insurance companies will need to offer two types of protection for self-driving cars in the UK, to cover times when the vehicle is driving itself and times when a human driver is in control, according to government proposals. The plans, which are detailed in the Vehicle Technology and Aviation Bill, enable drivers involved in an accident to claim compensation if the incident took place when their car was driving autonomously. Under the rules, insurers would be able to try to recover their costs from the vehicle manufacturers. Philosophy, public services and artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Luciano Floridi has a job title that might seem odd at first glance but has a strong underlying logic: professor of philosophy and ethics of information at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford. Anyone who thinks seriously about technology's role in society has to bring an element of philosophy to the mix. It involves critical discussion and questions around ethics in addressing the core issue of whether innovations are going to be good or bad for people in the long term. It underpins Floridi's work in looking at the implications of digital technology on people's lives and society, and leads him into areas beyond those highlighted by many of the tech evangelists. It includes the implications for public services, and while he is no alarmist, he says that governments should be careful in planning for what they want to achieve.

Amazon Argues Alexa Speech Protected By First Amendment In Murder Trial Fight

Forbes - Tech

An Amazon Echo device is displayed at the Ford booth at CES 2017 at the Las Vegas Convention Center on January 5, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Amazon is sticking to its guns in the fight to protect customer data. The tech titan has filed a motion to quash the search warrant for recordings from an Amazon Echo in the trial of James Andrew Bates, accused of murdering friend Victor Collins in Bentonville, Arkansas in November 2015. And it's arguing that the responses of Alexa, the voice of the Echo, has First Amendment rights as part of that motion. The case first came to light in December, when it emerged Amazon was contesting an order to provide audio from the Echo device, during the 48-hour period from November 21 through 22 2015, alongside subscriber and account information.

Next exoplanet or solar system discovery could be made accidentally by gamers, not by Nasa

The Independent - Tech

Nasa might have announced the biggest exoplanet find ever, but gamers are already gearing up find the next one. As scientists announced that they had found the "holy grail" of exoplanets – a solar system of seven worlds that could support life – a game announced that it was beginning the search for the next one. Massively multiplayer online game EVE Online has announced that it will be launching a search for planets orbiting our solar system, looking through the huge amount of data and images captured of other planets in our galaxy.
