AP Interview: Expert Who Beat Cyberattack Says He's No Hero
CORRECTS FROM HUTCHIS TO HUTCHINS -British IT expert Marcus Hutchins who has been branded a hero for slowing down the WannaCry global cyber attack, during an interview in Ilfracombe, England, Monday, May 15, 2017. Hutchins thwarted the virus that took computer files hostage around the world, including the British National Health computer network, telling The Associated Press he doesn't consider himself a hero but fights malware because "it's the right thing to do.''
Serious challenges before our schools, students and professionals
A third to half the jobs that we are currently employed in would disappear in the next 15 years; and yet your child is being prepared in school for those very same jobs that won't exist by the time they graduate. Our curriculum prepares us for a lifetime career, but a child today can expect to change jobs at least seven times over the course of their lives โ and five of those jobs don't exist yet. The coming days would see us pursuing careers that we cannot even imagine today. For instance your child could be an expert licensed drone pilot, or a cyber warrior in the army, a data analyst making sense of the peta bytes of data generated through our social interactions and trying to forecast our behavior. The other big challenge facing students today is that the velocity of technology changes has gained incredible speed; this is making knowledge obsolete faster than before.
Multivariate Anomaly Detection in Medicare using Model Residuals and Probabilistic Programming
Bauder, Richard A. (Florida Atlantic University) | Khoshgoftaar, Taghi M. (Florida Atlantic University)
Anomalies in healthcare claims data can be indicative of possible fraudulent activities, contributing to a significant portion of overall healthcare costs. Medicare is a large government run healthcare program that serves the needs of the elderly in the United States. The increasing elderly population and their reliance on the Medicare program create an environment with rising costs and increased risk of fraud. The detection of these potentially fraudulent activities can recover costs and lessen the overall impact of fraud on the Medicare program. In this paper, we propose a new method to detect fraud by discovering outliers, or anomalies, in payments made to Medicare providers. We employ a multivariate outlier detection method split into two parts. In the first part, we create a multivariate regression model and generate corresponding residuals. In the second part, these residuals are used as inputs into a generalizable univariate probability model. We create this Bayesian probability model using probabilistic programming. Our results indicate our model is robust and less dependent on underlying data distributions, versus Mahalanobis distance. Moreover, we are able to demonstrate successful anomaly detection, within Medicare specialties, providing meaningful results for further investigation.
Pentagon to use AI to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria
The Pentagon has revealed a new AI system designed to lead the hunt for Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. Codenamed Project Maven, it will analyse aerial surveillance video to look for patterns that can help operators. It comes as military bosses say the thousands of military and civilian intelligence analysts are'overwhelmed' by the amount of video being recorded over the battlefield by drones with high resolution cameras. A US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle: Military bosses say intelligence analysts are'overwhelmed' by the amount of video being recorded over the battlefield by drones with high resolution cameras. 'We have to tackle the problem a different way,' Air Force Lt. Gen. John N.T.'Jack' Shanahan, director for defense intelligence for warfighter support, and the man tasked with finding the new technology, told Defense One.
The Pentagon is hunting ISIS using big data and machine learning
Military and civilian intelligence analysts "overwhelmed" by the sheer volume of video surveillance data recorded over the America's numerous military incursions against ISIS will soon get some relief. The Pentagon announced on Monday that it is tasking its newly-minted Algorithmic Warfare Cross Functional Team (AWCFT), dubbed Project Maven, with using big data and machine learning to accelerate the process of discovering actionable intelligence in all that aerial imagery. There's simply too much incoming information for the Pentagon's stable of analysts, says. "We're not going to solve it by throwing more people at the problem...That's the last thing that we actually want to do. We want to be smarter about what we're doing," he told Defense One.
A16Z AI Playbook
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a set of computer science techniques that, as Stanford professor Andrew Ng is fond of saying, gives your software super powers. We've met with hundreds of Fortune 500 / Global 2000 companies, startups, and government policy makers asking: "How do I get started with artificial intelligence?" While there are dozens of excellent tutorials available on the web (once you've figured out what library or API you want to use - we've listed a few of our favorites in the Reference section), we felt a pre-tutorial -- a "Chapter 0" if you will, was missing: something that would help you survey the landscape broadly; to give you a sense of what's possible; and help you think about how you might use artificial intelligence techniques to make your software smarter, your users happier, and your business better. While this playbook is written for a general audience, we've written some sample code and shared both the code and data sets on Github to encourage those who want to play with some software to do so.
Bill Gates Advice: CEO Tells Freshmen Humanity Is Getting Better
If you can't personally see Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates give a commencement speech, you can check out the advice he dispensed in a series of tweets aimed at incoming freshmen Monday. The philanthropist revealed the fields he would study if he was enrolling in college now. "AI [artificial intelligence], energy and biosciences are promising fields where you can make a huge impact. It's what I would do if starting out today," Gates said. Read: What Will War Look Like In The Future? Terrorists Could Kill Millions With Biological Weapons, Bill Gates Warns Artificial intelligence is not a surpise since Gates has previously has talked about AI, especially robots.

Billionaire Steve Cohen hired 2 investors from the CIA's secretive VC fund for a new Palo Alto office
Billionaire Steve Cohen has opened a Palo Alto office to invest in early-stage companies focused on big data and machine learning, and he has hired two people who invested on behalf of the CIA. The two men leading the effort are Daniel Gwak and Sri Chandrasekar, who previously worked at In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm that is mostly funded by the Central Intelligence Agency. The pair started their new roles on May 1, according to Matthew Granade, Point72's chief market intelligence officer. The new Silicon Valley office is part of Point72 Ventures, Cohen's venture capital unit, which is legally separate from his $11 billion family office, Point72 Asset Management. Cohen launched Point72 Ventures last year, hiring Pete Casella of JPMorgan Chase Strategic Investments to help lead the effort.
