Trump's Crazy AI Rebrand Was a Loyalty Test for Tech Execs--and It Worked

WIRED

Trump's Crazy AI Rebrand Was a Loyalty Test for Tech Execs--and It Worked But they meekly went along when Trump cancelled the term. Seventy years ago last summer, a group of scientists met at Dartmouth College to discuss a wild idea--that machines might one day be capable of human-like thought processes. One of those scientists, John McCarthy, had suggested a name for the new field: artificial intelligence . When you search Google Scholar for "artificial intelligence," approximately 7,420,000 results appear. The term is utterly ubiquitous. Even for people who despise AI, the least of their worries is what we call it.

NVIDIA's smuggling problem is getting worse

Engadget

US prosecutors just charged a man with smuggling NVIDIA chips to China, and government officials are saying the company isn't doing all it could to stop the illegal activities, Bloomberg reported. Earlier this year, officials released a surveillance video showing someone using a red hair dryer to peel serial number stickers off NVIDIA server boxes in an effort to sneak AI chips to China. And yesterday, federal authorities arrested a man named Greg Lui for smuggling servers containing 300 million worth of AI chips to China, in violation of US export laws. Those efforts reportedly show how an expanded network of criminals is attempting to reroute NVIDIA's AI chips to China, profiting from Washington's export controls that make the contraband silicon valuable. NVIDIA says it has abided by the rules and the company has never been accused of abetting smuggling.

The Metro Bridge was closed in the direction of Kyiv's right bank, the city administration said.

WIRED

Amazon Says It's No Longer Using NDAs for Data Centers The company announced it will stop using secret agreements with county officials and acknowledges community backlash could lead to data center "moratoriums" across the country. Amazon has made a series of new public commitments to communities where it's building data centers, including making an official announcement that it no longer uses nondisclosure agreements in its arrangements with county officials. In a blog post published Friday, CEO Matt Garman detailed the steps the company says it's already taking around data centers. In addition to stopping the use of NDAs, Garman says $1 billion will be invested over the next five years in communities that house the company's data centers. The money will go toward free community college programs, workforce training, and energy efficiency upgrades for schools, homes, and community buildings.
