Drone pilots are getting their own weather forecasts
Whether you think drones are super-great or want to shoot them out of the sky, they've become increasingly vital for missions like crop spraying, inspection and filming. Yet, it's impossible for operators to get the kind of detailed weather info that airplane pilots have because UAVs generally fly at much lower altitudes. Now, a company called Earth Networks is unveiling Sferic DroneFlight, "hyperlocal, low-altitude weather weather forecasting for drone operators. Earth Networks will deliver detailed regional forecasts from 10 to 400 feet of altitude (in 10 foot increments) at any location in the world. You'll see hourly forecasts for wind speed and direction up to six days ahead of time, making it easier to plan tricky missions.
Artificial Intelligence And Big Data: Good For Innovation?
China's 19-year-old Go player Ke Jie reacts during the second match against Google's artificial intelligence programme AlphaGo in Wuzhen, eastern China's Zhejiang province on May 25, 2017. Artificial intelligence is firmly embedded throughout the economy. Financial services firms use it to provide investment advice to customers, automakers are using it in vehicle autopilot systems, technology companies are using it to create virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri, and retailers are using artificial intelligence (AI) together with customers' prior sales histories, to predict potential purchases in the future, to name but a few examples. The potential of AI to boost economic growth has been discussed in numerous forums, including by Accenture, the Council on Foreign Relations, the McKinsey Global Institute, the World Economic Forum, and President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, among others. The most dramatic advances in AI are coming from a data-intensive technique known as machine learning.
Elon Musk: World War 3 Will Be Started by a Preemptive AI Nuclear Attack
Stating in a tweet this week that artificial intelligence would be the most likely cause of World War 3, entrepreneur and tech mogul Elon Musk added a new chapter to his crusade against unregulated AI. Coming on the heels of Vladimir Putin's pronouncement that the best innovator in AI technology would be the next global leader -- as well as Musk's own statement that AI is more dangerous than North Korea -- the new tweet comes amid a peak of global tensions regarding nuclear ICBMs. Govts don't need to follow normal laws. They will obtain AI developed by companies at gunpoint, if necessary. Musk has positioned himself as a neo-Luddite in the AI race but has also made the controversial claim that the best way for us to safeguard human civilization against runaway AI is to essentially merge our minds symbiotically with AI technology.
Civic Debate -
This civic consultation will proactively engage citizens, practitioners, world experts, and researchers working on AI, robotics, cyber, public policy, international relations and economics. The aim of the civic debate is to trigger a broad and inclusive dialogue which informs our understanding of the dynamics and consequences of the rise of AI and how to govern the current technological revolution. The collective intelligence platform will lead to a synthesis of the main ideas and proposals, which will in turn be used to inform solutions and actionable policy tools for the international governance of AI. It is the intention that other civic debates on questions of governance of emerging technosciences and the future of humanity will follow. Through this civic consultation we aim to trigger a broad and inclusive dialogue to help better understand the dynamics and consequences of the rise of AI and how to govern this revolution.
Mine public and private data to gain broader context and make better decisions - Watson
Key Points: – It's critical for many businesses to get a unified "single pane of glass" view of private business data alongside publicly accessible data. Contrasting these with open data is invaluable. The digital age has enabled greater visibility and access to data and content than ever before. Students, research professionals and businesses benefit from data democratization in ways that would have seemed impossible even a decade ago. Though some businesses are still striving to eliminate departmental silos within their enterprise, leading organizations are adopting technology to compare and contrast their private business data with third party and open data from the digital realm.
Harnessing Data through AI to Understand the B2B Buyer's Journey Vengreso
Raviv Turner is Co-Founder and CEO at CaliberMind. On this episode, he and I discuss the challenges B2B marketers face in understanding the lengthy buyer's journey. It's long, it's complex, there are more people involved, and there is a ton of data spread across both structured and unstructured sources, making it difficult for B2B sales teams to accelerate their revenue goals. Raviv's career path includes being an entrepreneur, a product designer, a marketing technologist, and a Former Israel Signal Intelligence Community Officer. He applied the knowledge he learned about Big Data while working as an Intelligence Officer into his work building software products.

Chinese netizens fumed on May 25 over a government ban on live coverage of Google algorithm AlphaGo's battle with the world's top Go player, as the programme clinched their three-match series in the ancient board game. Artificial intelligence is firmly embedded throughout the economy. IBM commits $240 million to fund an MIT A.I. lab
IBM on Wednesday said it will spend $240 million to open a Watson-branded artificial intelligence research lab in collaboration with a long-time partner, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. IBM has made larger financial commitments in the past. Still, the amount of money is notable in the world of AI research. MIT is no stranger to that field: The university was home to one of the first AI labs and continues to be well regarded as a place to do work in the sector. And MIT is also accustomed to working with IBM.
The artificial intelligence arms race - Policy Forum
Cyberspace is now a territory where politics, economics, and foreign affairs are all contested – and Internet bots driven by artificial intelligence have emerged as key new actors, Andrej Zwitter writes. Artificial intelligence (AI) is pervading all aspects of our lives. As one of the primary methods of analysing unstructured and messy data sets, it has become synonymous with big data. And with much of the globally produced data being transmitted via the Internet, a new cyber landscape has emerged, a parallel digital world that still requires the carving out of territories and rules. These territories are currently dominated by large corporate actors, such as search engines and social media networks, which themselves compete over access to the new raw material – data.
Google building artificial intelligence team in China
Google looks to be quietly forming a team of artificial intelligence experts in mainland China, according to the United States-based internet giant's recent jobs listings online. A check on Monday of the postings on social networking platform LinkedIn showed it had been recruiting since May for a research scientist, technical lead and software engineer in machine learning technology in Beijing. In addition, there was another post for product manager in cloud machine learning that was first listed in June. Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence focused on computer programs that have the ability to learn when exposed to new data. In July the Chinese government set out an ambitious plan to leap frog the United States and become the global leader in artificial intelligence by 2030.
