UK lifeboat crew tests drones as search and rescue helpers

Engadget

Drones are becoming an important part of the emergency services. Police are using them to search for missing people, while fire departments test them as a tool to survey dangerous sites. Until now, however, we haven't seen or heard about them being used by the coastguard. That all changes today, however, as a lifeboat service in Norfolk, England, has started using them in open water. As the BBC reports, they're equipped with cameras that can live-stream footage to monitors inside the boat.

Three Critical Machine Learning Questions for Cybersecurity Pros

#artificialintelligence

For cybersecurity pros who fight unseen cloud adversaries every day, the rise of faceless security automation might feel uncomfortably familiar. But is automation yet another shapeless enemy, this time intent on slashing cybersecurity jobs? Or is it something else? Fortunately, the demand for cloud security experts far outstrips the supply. The smart players don't fear automation, they embrace it as a better way to catch the bad guys.

Bill Gates wishes ctrl-alt-del was one button

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Bill Gates takes part in the Bloomberg Global Business Forum on Wednesday in New York City. Heads of state and international business leaders met to discuss global issues and challenges to economic growth. The inaugural year of the forum was held concurrently with the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has pledged to give more than half of his enormous wealth to philanthropy and helped make the personal computer a reality -- but he cannot live down the control-alt-delete keyboard function. On Wednesday, the billionaire admitted the three-strokes PC users must use to log on to their computer or interrupt a program could be just one button.

HPE's Spaceborne Computer Installed On ISS, Achieves 1 Teraflop Speed

International Business Times

One month ago, the most powerful computer in space was launched. The computer has now recorded a speed in excess one teraflop, which is equivalent to a trillion floating point calculations per second. It is the first commercial off-shelf computer to run at such high speeds at the International Space Station. Last month, it was reported that the mission, pioneered by NASA and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) was set to test the computer to check if it runs seamlessly in the harsh conditions of space for one year -- roughly the amount of time it will take to travel to Mars. These computers have to withstand the harsh effects of radiation storms that periodically sweep space outside our atmosphere.

AI system will soon be able to tell you how to vote

Daily Mail - Science & tech

If you're struggling to decide how to vote in the next election, then help may be at hand – in the form of a robot. Scientists have created an artificial intelligence robot called Nigel that will soon be able to assist users in making political decisions. But while its designers are confident that the robot will be able to help you make these important decisions in the future, they emphasise that they are'still way off' from this goal. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is an emerging field aimed at building'thinking machines.' These are general-purpose systems with intelligence comparable to that of the human mind.

US military creating microchips for killer robots

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Killer robots of the future will need more powerful chips to allow them to process vast amounts of data. The US military has now announced it is investing $900 million (£665 million) on advanced materials and technologies to make these processors a reality. It hope its efforts will enable the 50 years of growth in micro-processing power to continue over the coming century. This will allow for the creation of advanced AI systems, ranging from killing machines to cars, planes and other autonomous technology. Advanced AI systems of the future will need more powerful chips to allow them to process vast amounts of data.

Whoops! EU's copyright reforms might suck for AI startups

#artificialintelligence

Governments are having a hard time keeping up with the world of technology, and the EU is no different. By its very nature, governing bodies are slow to change, while the tech industry's speed is astounding -- it's basically like a hippo chasing a cheetah. Tech.eu reported on the unintended side-effects of the new reforms. According to the tech site, there's a general consensus about the reforms' big-picture but the nitty-gritty is hotly debated, especially how it will affect startups. Turns out, startups built around AI, machine learning and big data will be particularly affected.

UK Bases in Cyprus Employ Drones to Catch Songbird Poachers

U.S. News

A police officer of SBA controls a drone during a demonstration at the British police station inside the British military base in Dhekelia in southeast of the island of Cyprus, Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017. Police at Britain's two military bases on Cyprus say the use of a state-of-the-art drone will greatly boost their ongoing crackdown on the illicit trapping of migratory birds.

Drones and the Age of Automation

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence is quickly becoming a buzzword in the technology industry. There has been a phenomenal growth in recent years in industries adopting artificial intelligence and Machine learning to automate operations and manufacturing processes. There is a marked shift to the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the finance, automobile and healthcare industries which will pave the way to transform many other industries as well. Some of us may ask, what is Artificial Intelligence and why is it so important? Artificial Intelligence or AI is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines.

Could AI lead to breaches of GDPR? - Enterprise Times

#artificialintelligence

The last year has seen a move by IT vendors to introduce increasing amounts of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and cognitive systems. How well the solutions meet the claims made by vendors is not part of this article. What is important is that companies are feeding these systems vast amounts of data to do advanced analytics. The advantage of using these systems is that they are able to deliver solutions far faster than data scientists and security analysts can. For business units, this is good news.
