SC17: AI and Machine Learning are Central to Computational Attack on Cancer
Enlisting computational technologies in the war on cancer isn't new but it has taken on an increasingly decisive role. At SC17, Eric Stahlberg, director of the HPC Initiative at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research in the Data Science and Information Technology Program, and two colleagues will lead the third Computational Approaches for Cancer workshop being held the Friday, Nov. 17, at SC17. It is hard to overstate the importance of computation in today's pursuit of precision medicine. Given the diversity and size of datasets it's also not surprising that the "new kids" on the HPC cancer fighting block โ AI and deep learning/machine learning โ are also becoming the big kids on the block promising to significantly accelerate efforts understand and integrate biomedical data to develop and inform new treatments. In this Q&A, Stahlberg discusses the goals of the workshop, the growing importance of AI/deep learning in biomedical research, how programs such as the Joint Design of Advanced Computing Solutions for Cancer (JDACS4C) are progressing, the need for algorithm assurance and portability, as well as ongoing needs where HPC technology has perhaps fallen short.
Why George Orwell is returning to the BBC
The BBC headquarters in London is getting a new resident: he's tall, bronze and likes a smoke. From Tuesday a statue of novelist George Orwell is to adorn the exterior of New Broadcasting House, a few minutes from where Orwell worked as a radio producer in World War Two. But what was the author of Nineteen Eighty-four (Orwell's original worded title) doing in the BBC? For decades its staff have delighted in the suggestion Orwell took his notion of absolute hell from two years spent at the BBC. Near the end of Nineteen Eighty-four (1984 is now more commonly used on book covers), Winston Smith finds himself trapped in the Ministry of Love's Room 101, "many metres underground".
Samsung joins forces with the US military to develop 5G
Ultra-fast mobile broadband could soon be with us, thanks to a prototype 5G network currently under development. The system uses small antennae to send data between two micro signal towers, either based on the ground or in the air, at high speed. This could overcome one of the key hurdles of 5G technology, by avoiding the need for huge masts to transmit signals above buildings and other obstacles. Ultra-fast mobile broadband could soon be with us, thanks to a prototype 5G network currently under development. The Samsung-US network relies on small multi-directional antennas for line-of-sight connections.
'Killer robots' that can decide whether people live or die must be banned, warn hundreds of experts
Hundreds of artificial intelligence experts have urged the Canadian and Australian governments to ban "killer robots". They say that delegating life-or-death decisions to machines crosses "a clear moral line", and that the development of autonomous weapons will result in machines, rather than people, deciding who lives and who dies. Such systems, including drones, military robots and unmanned vehicles, should be treated in the same way as chemical weapons, biological weapons and nuclear weapons, they say. An open letter addressed to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been signed by 122 AI researchers, while an open letter sent to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has 216 signatories. Toby Walsh, the organiser of the Australian letter and Scientia Professor of AI at UNSW Sydney, said, "The Canadian AI research community is clear: we must not permit AI to target or kill without meaningful human control. "Delegating life-or-death decisions to machines crosses a fundamental moral line โ no matter which side builds or uses them.
Darktrace answers Capitol Hill SOS on industrial sabotage Business Weekly Technology News Business news
Cambridge cyber defence pioneer Darktrace has responded to twin alarms from the US government and EU by launching a specialist division to deal with threats of industrial espionage. Darktrace Industrial will specifically identify emerging and existing compromises on industrial systems and critical infrastructure networks. Andrew Tsonchev has been unveiled as director of technology at Darktrace Industrial. The launch signals a four-year investment by Darktrace in the Industrial Immune System โ the world's first and only proven machine learning technology capable of detecting emerging attacks on OT environments. Tsonchev said that threats to critical infrastructure are garnering increasing worldwide attention.
Stephen Hawking says A.I. could be 'worst event in the history of our civilization'
Hawking explained that to avoid this potential reality, creators of AI need to "employ best practice and effective management." The scientist highlighted some of the legislative work being carried out in Europe, particularly proposals put forward by lawmakers earlier this year to establish new rules around AI and robotics. Members of the European Parliament said European Union-wide rules were needed on the matter. Such developments are giving Hawking hope. "I am an optimist and I believe that we can create AI for the good of the world. That it can work in harmony with us. We simply need to be aware of the dangers, identify them, employ the best possible practice and management, and prepare for its consequences well in advance," Hawking said.
Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi to join new ISS mission from 2019
Astronaut Soichi Noguchi has been selected to take part in a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station starting around the end of 2019, Japan's space agency said Tuesday. It will be the third ISS mission for the 52-year-old, following earlier expeditions in 2005 and 2009. Training for the mission, which will be carried out in both Japan and the United States, starts from Nov. 20. "I am extremely honored as I may be able to witness a big turning point in the history of manned space flights," Noguchi said. Noguchi will be responsible for maintaining ISS facilities, including the Japanese laboratory module Kibo, as well as conducting experiments and operating the station's robotic arm.
Will The Future Of Artificial Intelligence Look Chinese?
Baidu Inc.'s autonomous car stands at the company's headquarters in Beijing, China, in January, 2016. For years China has watched with envy as the West developed one frontier technology after another, while it could only count on low-cost labor to fuel growth. Now a fundamental shift is underway in one of the hottest fields of technological innovation: Artificial Intelligence (AI). China is no longer simply catching up with the U.S., it is now taking the lead in some fields of AI, experts say. The country's AI advances stem from significant state support coupled with an increasingly vibrant private sector.
iPhone 11 To Feature Smaller, Faster Processor With Advanced AI
Apple may have just recently launched the iPhone X, but there are already rumors about its next-generation handsets for 2018. This week, a new report is claiming that its Taiwanese supplier TSMC is already preparing the processors for iDevices that will be released from 2018 to 2021. On Monday, Patently Apple reported that Apple supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is already aggressively scheduling the processors for the iDevices the Cupertino giant is planning to release starting next year. The processors that the company is making are notably smaller and faster than previous iterations. The outlet further revealed that TSMC has been investing in AI for mobile computing, IoT, automotive electronics and high-performance computing.
