Taipei, March 14 (CNA) Leading multinational tech company Microsoft is focusing on recruiting artificial intelligence (AI) talent from Taiwan during its current recruitment season, a Microsoft Taiwan official said Wednesday. Michael Chang (張仁烔), chief executive officer of the newly announced Microsoft AI research and development hub in Taiwan, explained that Microsoft is targeting AI talent in Taiwan because of the hard and soft skills that local students possess. Not only are some Taiwanese skilled at data analysis and coding, but they are also insightful, creative and good team players, Chang continued. The talent base in Taiwan is actually one of the main reasons Microsoft decided to base its AI research and development center here, he said. To this end, many of Microsoft's AI department managers from around the world visited Taiwan Tuesday for a press conference on its campus recruitment.

Stephen Hawking, the theoretical physicist whose work on black holes and cosmology vastly expanded and complicated our understanding of the universe, died at his home in Cambridge, England early Wednesday, the New York Times reports. Hawking was perhaps the most famous living scientist, known as much for his work bringing complicated ideas about the universe to laypeople as for his breakthroughs in physics. His 1988 book A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes offered a breezy, conversational overview of the current state of the field, covering topics as specific as "The Uncertainty Principle" (chapter four) and as broad as "The Origin and Fate of the Universe" (chapter eight). Hawking gave his own biggest discovery--that black holes can emit radiation--a grand total of fourteen pages, in a chapter entitled "Black Holes Ain't So Black," which seems modest to the point of being glib--but then the 1974 paper in which Hawking announced his findings was titled "Black Hole Explosions?", question mark very much included, so not really out of character. A Brief History of Time became a bestseller, made Hawking a household name, and introduced the search for a grand unified theory into the popular imagination.

Those are some of the skills you will need. And also, how do you deal with people, how do you empathise with them. So, in addition to the content we are teaching, we also should be teaching and learning about new ways of solving problems using technology using people and all sorts of combinations. The "Luddite fallacy" is the idea that increasing productivity leads to long-term job loss. The original Luddites (named after Ned Ludd who allegedly smashed two stocking frames in 1779) rebelled against the mechanisation of production in the early days of the Industrial revolution, destroying spinning frames and other new machines that threatened their employment. Since new and better jobs came after, the fallacy is that jobs are permanently lost rather than replaced. This was always the case, the hunters and gatherers lost their outcome to farmers at the dawn of agriculture. More recently, qualified industrial jobs have been replaced by robots, low-qualified white-collar jobs (secretaries, ticket clerks, switch-board operators) by computers.
