'#WarGames' Is a Unique, Interactive Revival of the '80s Movie
The FMV videogame emerged in the late 1980s, and then died an ignoble death in the early 1990s. But in the past few years the genre has gotten a small, unlikely revival--one that unlocks its potential in a way the first wave never did. Indeed, what's emerged now is something very different, a format more playful and more thoughtful than anything that surfaced back then. Created by Sam Barlow, an FMV pioneer and the developer behind 2015's mystifying Her Story, the game stars completely unknown talent and is just as odd, and just as promising, as you would expect. In #WarGames, which you can stream online, Kelly's mother is a soldier killed in the line of duty, inspiring Kelly and a fellow group of hackers to engage in a crusade that takes them up against the military industrial complex, ensnaring them in a sprawling conspiracy world that ranges from broadcast news to drone warfare.

Doug Ducey began a push three years ago to attract makers of self-driving cars to the state and actively wooed Uber away from California as a venue for testing those vehicles. Shortly after his election in 2015, the governor signed an executive order supporting the testing and operation of self-driving vehicles that he said was about "innovation, economic growth, and most importantly, public safety." Now the "public safety" part of that order has been thrown into question and Arizona's willingness to become a testing ground for emerging driverless vehicles has come into sharp focus after Sunday's incident in which a self-driving Volvo SUV operated by Uber struck and killed a 49-year-old woman who was walking her bicycle in Tempe.

Customer service calls can be ... infuriating. Part of the reason is that humans generally aren't great at reading subtle emotional cues, especially if we only have voice to go by. At the same time, we often inadvertently broadcast unintended emotional signals, easily leading to miscommunication and discomfort over the phone. But an MIT spinoff called Cogito is using voice analytics to help customer service reps better understand how customers are feeling. The technology behind Cogito's enterprise product, which can predict a customer's emotional state by analyzing tone and voice patterns, has also been used to identify signs of PTSD and depression in veterans.

The Orange County Fair, held in Southern California: in theory, these crowds hold a predictive power that can have startling accuracy, but it doesn't belong to any individual, only the group. And even then, it has to be viewed through the lens of mathematics. The theory is known as the "wisdom of crowds," a phenomenon first documented about a hundred years ago. Statistician Talithia Williams is here to see if the theory checks out and to spend some time with the Fair's most beloved animal, Patches, a 14-year-old ox. To his surprise, while none of the individual guesses were correct, the average of all the guesses was off by less than one percent. But is it still true? TALITHIA WILLIAMS: So, here's how I think we can test that today. What if we ask a random sample of people, here at the fair, if they can guess how many jellybeans they think are in the jar, and then we take those numbers and average them and see if that's actually close to the true number of jellybeans?

On Friday night, Facebook released a statement banning Cambridge Analytica, a data operations team that worked on the Donald Trump campaign for breaking the social network's terms of service regarding data collection about users. It's not a typical breach--in fact, Facebook is careful to point out that it's not technically a breach at all--but reports say information about likes, locations, and names are compromised for up to 50 million users. Apple and IBM Unveil Artificial Intelligence Service That Coca-Cola Is Testing
Apple and IBM have teamed up on an artificial intelligence service that is intended to make it easier for business customers to create apps. The service is an expansion of a nearly four-year old partnership between Apple and IBM in which the two companies create corporate apps together for Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad. They've already created apps that help healthcare workers better track medical records and apps for workers in to field to more easily share information they gather with colleagues. The idea is for IBM to sell corporate apps co-created with Apple's design team for business customers to use on mobile devices, and for Apple to then sell those iPhones and iPads to businesses. Apple is increasingly trying to make headway in selling its devices to corporations, an area in which it has previously played a supporting role as it focused on the consumer market.
Uber Suspends Driverless-Car Program After Pedestrian Death
In response, Uber on Monday temporarily pulled its self-driving cars off the roads where it has been testing them in four cities. An Uber spokeswoman said the company is investigating the incident and cooperating with authorities. Police in Tempe, Ariz., said the Uber vehicle was in autonomous mode with a human safety operator at the wheel when it hit 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg on Sunday night while she was walking her bicycle outside of a crosswalk. The woman later died from her injuries, according to a police statement. While it isn't clear yet whether Uber's vehicle was at fault in the accident, the fatality confirmed the fears of those who have warned for several years that someone would eventually die from driverless cars.

Uber Technologies Inc. halted autonomous vehicle tests after one of its cars struck and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona, in what is likely the first pedestrian fatality involving the technology. The 49-year-old woman, Elaine Herzberg, was crossing the road outside of a crosswalk when the Uber vehicle operating in autonomous mode under the supervision of a human safety driver struck her, according to the Tempe Police Department. After the incident, which happened at 10 p.m. local time on Sunday, she was transferred to a nearby hospital, where she died from her injuries. "Uber is assisting and this is still an active investigation," Liliana Duran, a Tempe police spokeswoman, said in an emailed statement. We're thinking of the victim's family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened.

The work, presented on 15 March at a meeting organized by the US Department of Energy (DOE), illustrates an emerging tool for exploring the enormous, largely unknown diversity of viruses on Earth. Although viruses influence everything from human health to the degradation of trash, they are hard to study. Scientists cannot grow most viruses in the lab, and attempts to identify their genetic sequences are often thwarted because their genomes are tiny and evolve fast. In recent years, researchers have hunted for unknown viruses by sequencing DNA in samples taken from various environments.
