Futurist Sophie Hackford returned to the Condรฉ Nast International Luxury Conference for the fourth consecutive year this morning to share the key technology developments that will help shape tomorrow's luxury landscape. In her previous talks, Hackford encouraged delegates - many of whom are the world's top luxury CEOs and designers - to get on board with the internet's new future and not repeat what she saw as the collective mistake of the early Noughties, when the industry did not get online and on-board with e-commerce quickly enough. Today, she expanded her theory that the world is becoming a computer, and delved into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The language of the future, Hackford explained, is the language of machines. But after 60 years of disappointments, in which a lot was promised by AI but not much of it seen, how will it actually transform our lives?

Xi Jinping's bookshelf includes not only classics on communism but also works on artificial intelligence, as TV viewers spotted during his new year's speech this year. One of the books that helps the Chinese president understand AI is The Master Algorithm, a 2015 bestseller by Pedro Domingos. In a recent interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, Domingos, who teaches computer science at the University of Washington, said that when he saw his book on Xi's bookshelf, he found it "both exciting and scary." Exciting because China is developing rapidly, and there are all sorts of ways the Chinese and the rest of the world can benefit from AI. Scary because this is an authoritarian government, going full tilt on using AI to control their population. In fact, what we are seeing now is just the beginning.

The Adversarial Robustness Toolbox (ART), an open source software library, supports both researchers and developers in defending deep neural networks against adversarial attacks, making AI systems more secure. Its purpose is to allow rapid crafting and analysis of attack and defense methods for machine learning models. The Adversarial Robustness Toolbox provides an implementation for many state-of-the-art methods for attacking and defending classifiers. It is designed to support researchers and AI developers in creating novel defense techniques and in deploying practical defenses of real-world AI systems. For AI developers, the library provides interfaces that support the composition of comprehensive defense systems using individual methods as building blocks.

Pasadena Now ยป Caltech-Created Machine-Learning Software Predicts Behavior of Bacteria

In a first for machine-learning algorithms, a new piece of software developed at Caltech can predict behavior of bacteria by reading the content of a gene. The breakthrough could have significant implications for our understanding of bacterial biochemistry and for the development of new medications. One thrust of modern pharmacology is focused on alleviating ailments by developing drugs that target specific proteins that reside in the membranes of our bodies' cells. These proteins, known as integral membrane proteins (IMP), act as receptors or "gates" that allow materials into and out of cells. Examples of IMPs are G-protein-coupled receptors, which relay information to a cell about its environment, and ion channels, which control the interior environment of a cell by acting as gatekeepers that selectively allow ions to pass in and out of the cell. IMPs are the targets of nearly 50 percent of all drugs on the market.
