Artificial intelligence (AI), a subset of machine learning, has the potential to drastically impact a nation's national security in various ways. Coined as the next space race, the race for AI dominance is both intense and necessary for nations to remain primary in an evolving global environment. As technology develops so does the amount of virtual information and the ability to operate at optimal levels when taking advantage of this data. Furthermore, the proper use and implementation of AI can facilitate a nation in the achievement of information, economic, and military superiority – all ingredients to maintaining a prominent place on the global stage. According to Paul Scharre, "AI today is a very powerful technology. Many people compare it to a new industrial revolution in its capacity to change things. It is poised to change not only the way we think about productivity but also elements of national power."AI is not only the future for economic and commercial power, but also has various military applications with regard to national security for each and every aspiring global power.

Elon Musk's comment that humans are underrated (Humans replace robots at flagging Tesla plant, 17 April) doesn't come as much of a surprise, even though his company is at the forefront of the technological revolution. Across industries, CEOs are wrestling with the balance between humans and increasingly cost-effective and advanced robots and artificial intelligence. However, as Mr Musk has discovered, the complexity of getting a machine to cover every possibility results in a large web of interconnected elements that can overcomplicate the underlying problem. This is why so many organisations fail when they try to automate everything they do. Three key mistakes I see time and again in these situations are missing the data basics, applying the wrong strategy, and losing the human touch. There are some clear cases where automation works well: low value, high repetition tasks or even complex ones where additional data will give a better outcome, for example, using medical-grade scanners on mechanical components to identify faults not visible to the human eye.

AI Goes Live for Clinical Pathology
A healthcare provider in Israel has begun to use what its vendor claims is the first-ever artificial intelligence-driven (AI) pathology diagnostic tool to go live in a clinical setting, according to an announcement. Maccabi Healthcare Services, which runs a pathology institute responsible for 160,000 histology accessions every year, recently started leveraging Ibex Medical Analytics' Second Read system, the tech developer said yesterday. The launch came after a pilot period in which the AI tool "identified isolated major errors" regarding prostate core needle biopsies, which were incorrectly diagnosed benign, according to Ibex. Although this is not the first clinical application of AI, Ibex said it is the first in this particular space, helping patients with prostate cancer and adding to a growing portfolio of the technology's diagnostic capabilities.
