In the world of technology, the mantra "innovate or die" is truer for organizations than ever, and artificial intelligence (AI) is redefining industries by providing greater personalization to users, automating processes, and disrupting how we work. Like the adoption of cloud computing five years ago, the adoption of AI and the speed of its deployment varies according to industry. Here we look at some of the places where dispution from AI is already being felt. Alexey Sapozhnikov, co-dounder and CTO of Tel Aviv, Israel-based prooV points out that while virtually every industry is embracing AI, it's the sectors that are stymied by well-worn processes and regulations -- such as healthcare and government -- that are likely to lag in AI adoption. "From the Food and Drug Administration's stringent policies surrounding AI diagnosis software to developing complex proposals for government cybersecurity challenges, these processes can pose a huge stumbling block for organizations.

The terms "artificial intelligence" and "machine learning" immediately bring up thoughts from movies like "The Matrix" where machines become self-aware and want to end the world. While this may make for an exciting plot in Hollywood, it is not reality outside of the theater. In real life, however, machine learning--which gives computers the ability to see hidden patterns in existing data and progressively improve performance ("learn") without being explicitly programmed--serves as a practical tool to data analysts. The job is not to turn robots into people, but instead efficiently find recurring themes that would otherwise remain obscured inside of large amounts of data to provide end-users with actionable information. These technologies have played a pivotal role in reducing fraud, waste and abuse in organizations of all types and sizes, including departments of revenue that collect taxes.

Facebook, Google, and twitter lawyers gave testimony to congress on how they missed the Russian influence campaign. Even though the ads were bought in Russian currency on platforms chalk full of analytics engines, the problematic nature of the influence campaign went undetected. "Rubles US politics" did not trigger an alert, because the nature of off-the-shelf deep learning is that it only looks for what it knows to look for, and on a deeper level, it is learning from really messy (unstructured) or corrupted and biased data. Understanding the unstructured nature of public data (mixed with private data) is improving by leaps and bounds every day. That's one of the main things I work on.


Britain pumps cash into artificial intelligence before Brexit

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain announced on Thursday a 1 billion pound ($1.4 billion) joint investment in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry to capitalize on what the government sees as a competitive advantage in the sector as it prepares for life after Brexit. The deal is the latest in a series of targeted public-private investment pacts in the government's industrial strategy that aims to modernize Britain's economy and address decades of regional and industrial decline. "It's evident that Britain is a place that people want to come to for AI," business minister Greg Clark told Reuters during a visit to a facility in London that nurtures early-stage tech businesses from across the world. "We have a position of strength that we want to capitalize on because if we don't build on it the other countries around the world would steal a march." Governments worldwide are plowing cash AI to keep up with international rivals and seeking to harness its power to transform industries from transport to agriculture.

New Army challenge seeks machine learning algorithms for better radio frequency analysis - Fedscoop

The Army Rapid Capabilities Office (RCO) is gearing up to launch a challenge seeking artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms for better radio frequency analysis. Specifically, the Army wants algorithms for "blind signal identification and classification" -- identification of signals without any prior knowledge of the signals present in a radio frequency channel. "Army soldiers are responsible for understanding a vast amount of information presented to them," a FedBizOpps announcement of the challenge reads. "Compounding the issue is the source and location information of, potentially, an infinite number of electronic signals through various sensing means, coordinating defensive and offensive operations to defend against electronic attack, and blunt the electronic means of the threat." Artificial intelligence, RCO hopes, can help.


Cambridge receives £10 million in funding for new AI supercomputer

The new AI supercomputer is a £10 million partnership between the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and the University. Capable of solving the largest scientific and industrial challenges at very high speeds, the supercomputer is supported by Cambridge's Research Computing Service. The aim is to help companies to create real business value from advanced computing infrastructures. The supercomputer is part of the UK government's AI Sector Deal, which involves more than 50 leading technology companies and organisations. The deal is worth almost £1 billion, including almost £300 million of private sector investment into AI.
