Video: Who should be liable for robot misbehavior? In early 2017, President Barack Obama's top economic and science advisers wrote a report entitled, Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and the Economy. The report is a cleared-eyed collation of current data and predictions pertaining to the accelerating pace of adoption of automation and AI technologies starting from around 2010. The full report is worth a look, but the top line findings are probably familiar. The analysts found that the day when robots will replace all workers is still remote, and any timeline for that happening is speculative at best.

The UK-based Alan Turing Institute is launching a new research programme in data science and artificial intelligence (AI) for public policy. Led by Professor Helen Margetts, a Turing Fellow and Professor of Society and Internet at the University of Oxford, the programme aims to foster government innovation. Researchers will work with policy-makers to explore how data-driven public service provision and policy innovation might solve long running'wicked' policy problems to develop the ethical foundations for the use of data in policy-making and to restore government's role as a leader in tech innovation. The new programme builds on the Turing's ongoing work with government. Working with the Institute's Data Ethics Group -- which leads the Turing's research in understanding the ethical and societal implications of data science and AI -- the Institute is advising the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on the recently announced Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation and is a founding partner of the Ada Lovelace Institute, which will be launched by the Nuffield Foundation later this year.

Australia and other countries around the world are seeing an increased use of artificial intelligence (AI). This week, Google unveiled a new feature called Duplex that uses artificial technology to generate a realistic-sounding voice assistant. The Australian government also announced in Tuesday's federal budget it would invest more than $2.4 billion in technology and science, including leading research in artificial intelligence. RMIT Senior Lecturer Dr Andy Song believes the definition has been debated for quite a long time. "There is no premise definition," Dr Song said.

Topics will include the impact of artificial intelligence on the job market. AI is set to have an impact on a variety of industries that include agriculture, automotive, healthcare and manufacturing. "This can be a true foundation for a whole new wave of innovation, a whole new wave of economic growth and development," McLaughlin said.


Apple, Microsoft and Uber test drones approved but Amazon left out in cold

Apple, Intel, Microsoft and Uber will soon start flying drones for a range of tasks including food and package delivery, digital mapping and conducting surveillance as part of 10 pilot programmes approved Wednesday by the US government. The drone-testing projects have been given waivers for regulations that currently ban their use in the US and will be used to help the Federal Aviation Authority draw up suitable laws to govern the use of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for myriad tasks. "The enthusiastic response to our request for applications demonstrated the many innovative technological and operational solutions already on the horizon," said US transportation secretary Elaine Chao. Apple will be using drones to capture images of North Carolina with the state's Department of Transportation. Uber is working on air-taxi technology and will deliver food by drone in San Diego, California, because "we need flying burgers" said the company's chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi.
