The US military is funding an AI that's learning to write its own code

If you're tired of writing your own boring code then finally, or you're a programmer that is just wistfully wishing for a day off once in a while, then, hot on the heels of another Artificial Intelligence (AI) so called "codeless programming" saviour, Microsoft's DeepCoder, a new AI agent called BAYOU has arrived on the scene. BAYOU, which you can try for yourself here, and which is described as a "system for generating API idioms," or "snippets of code that use API's," is a deep learning program that, put simply, works like a search engine for coding. Tell it what sort of program you want to create using a couple of carefully chosen keywords and, based on its best guess, BAYOU will spit out the java code that will do what you're looking for. BAYOU was developed by a team of computer scientists from Rice University who received funding both from the US military and Google to develop it, and they published a paper on it on arXiv where they describe how they built it and what sorts of problems it can help programmers solve. During its development BAYOU read the source code of over 1,500 Android apps, over 100 million lines of Java in all, which was then fed through its neural net to create an AI that, yes, can create and program other software.

China has made known its desire to become an AI powerhouse. Russia's Vladimir Putin last year equated AI dominance with ruling the world. On Thursday, the White House, a little late to the great game, hosted a meeting involving representatives from about 40 companies, including Facebook Inc. and Google Inc. as well as Ford Motor Co. and Walmart Inc., to discuss how the U.S. could maintain its lead in AI. The gathering followed a template for meetings of this type: Support was offered, 'atta-boys' were distributed. Still, the meeting acknowledged that AI, increasingly, has become tied to something larger.

Tech industry execs and engineers fretting about any backlash against artificial intelligence technology can rest assured that the White House, at least, isn't likely to slow its spread. "We didn't cut the lines before Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call. We didn't regulate flight before the Wright Brothers took off at Kitty Hawk," said, Michael Kratsios, the deputy assistant to the president for technology policy, in prepared remarks to tech companies. The views came at an AI summit that drew Amazon, Facebook, Google, Intel and 34 other companies to discuss the technology. AI is blazing-hot technology right now, a top priority at the world's biggest tech companies, fuel for countless startups, and now even an undergraduate degree program at Carnegie Mellon University.

The White House has announced a new initiative to work with companies on artificial intelligence, rather than imposing restrictive regulations. The new Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence was announced on Thursday by the US government's deputy CTO and de facto head of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP, Michael Kratsios. In prepared remarks, he said, "We didn't cut the lines before Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call; we didn't regulate flight before the Wright Brothers took off at Kitty Hawk." The announcement came as a surprise, given that the Trump White House has until this point been close-mouthed on the topic. In fact, Kratsios gave his speech on the same day that The Week published an article titled'Trump is MIA on AI'.

Compressive sensing on diverse STEM scans: real-time feedback, low-dose and dynamic range

Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) has become the main stay for materials characterization on atomic level, with applications ranging from visualization of localized and extended defects to mapping order parameter fields. In the last several years, attention was attracted by potential of STEM to explore beam induced chemical processes and especially manipulating atomic motion, enabling atom-by-atom fabrication. These applications, as well as traditional imaging of beam sensitive materials, necessitate increasing dynamic range of STEM between imaging and manipulation modes, and increasing absolute scanning/imaging speeds, that can be achieved by combining sparse sensing methods with non-rectangular scanning trajectories. Here we developed a general method for real-time reconstruction of sparsely sampled images from high-speed, non-invasive and diverse scanning pathways. This approach is demonstrated on both the synthetic data where ground truth is known and the experimental STEM data. This work lays the foundation for future tasks such as optimal design of dose efficient scanning strategies and real-time adaptive inference and control of e-beam induced atomic fabrication.

Trump technology adviser Michael Kratsios told US tech and business giants not to fear AI regulation in a private meeting today (May 10) but offered little in terms of a formal government-led framework--a sign the US will buck the global trend of massive public re-investment into artificial intelligence. The administration's primary objective is not to dictate what kind of AI systems to build or plan how AI development should proceed, according to prepared remarks made by Kratsios. Sometimes you've got to admire the shamelessness of Libertarian-loving Silicon Valley -- a region that does its best to keep the government at bay and avoid paying taxes yet doesn't hesitate for a second to ask that same government for help when it runs into trouble.
