Mayo Clinic study uses AI to detect heart rhythm disorder

An artificial intelligence algorithm is able to identify patients with congenital Long QT syndrome using limited electrocardiogram data, according to an abstract published May 10 at the Heart Rhythm Scientific Sessions conference in Boston. LQTS is a heart rhythm disorder that, if left untreated, puts patients at an increased risk for arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. For the study, a team of researchers from Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and AliveCor sought to determine whether AI could identify patients with congenital LQTS despite patients having a normal QTc on their EKG. The researchers applied an AI algorithm that used deep neural networks to patient data from lead I of a 12-lead EKG and evaluated whether the algorithm was able to distinguish between patients with concealed LQTS and those without the condition. The researchers found the deep neural network achieved 79 percent accuracy, along with specificity of 81 percent and sensitivity of 73 percent.

Visiting scholar James Timbie says that the artificial intelligence revolution will involve humans and machines working together, with the best results coming from humans supported by intelligent machines. Artificial intelligence and other advancing technologies promise advances in health, safety and productivity, but large-scale economic disruptions are inevitable, said James Timbie, an Annenberg Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He trained at Stanford as a physicist, served as a senior advisor at the State Department from 1983 to 2016 where he played a key role in arms control and disarmament, and now studies the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. Timbie discussed what the future may hold for workers in a chapter in the new book, Beyond Disruption: Technology's Challenge to Governance, which he co-edited with Hoover's George P. Shultz and Jim Hoagland.

Defense contractors took an explosive drone on a Delta flight

Employees from AeroVironment allegedly brought a drone with explosives attached to it in a carry-on bag, on a Delta flight in April 2015. As Bloomberg reports, the flight had 230 passengers and when another employee, Mark Anderson, discovered this and reported it to the Department of Defense a month later, he said he was punished, stripped of his responsibilities and then fired without a severance package. AeroVironment counts the US government as a major customer, Bloomberg notes. It's supplied the Navy with submarine-launched spy drones and made robo-hummingbirds for DARPA, for example. A recent report from the company said that over half of its income is from being a government contractor. It's pretty easy, if not more than a little predictable, to see why the company reacted to Anderson's claims the way it did.


Autonomous helicopter makes first operational delivery to Marines

Drones are coming to the battlefield faster than you think. Aurora Flight Sciences recently unveiled an autonomous, LiDAR equipped helicopter called AACUS, which was already an impressive feat, considering a helicopter's complexity. Now, for the first time, it has completed an autonomous, closed-loop cargo mission, delivering gas, water and medical supplies to US Marines during an integrated training exercise in California. AACUS (Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System) is based on a Bell UH-1H helicopter, but it's able to take off, fly and land completely autonomously, thanks to LiDAR, cameras, onboard computers and advanced algorithms. The system can plan its own trajectory and even select landing sites in "unmapped and hazardous conditions," Aurora said.
