The UK government wants to use artificial intelligence to spot signs of disease earlier. In a speech today, prime minister Theresa May said that AI could help to stop 22,000 cancer deaths a year by 2033. The technology could also be used for other conditions, such as heart disease. The plan is to develop AI systems that can scan data about patients' habits and genetics, and then cross-reference the country's health records to spot people at an early stage of disease.

Pentagon Prepares to Deploy Advanced Robot Soldiers
The U.S. Department of Defense will soon spend about $1 billion to deploy robot soldiers in the field, alongside -- and eventually in place of -- human troops. "Within five years, I have no doubt there will be robots in every Army formation," said Bryan McVeigh, the Army's project manager for force protection, as quoted in an article published by Bloomberg. McVeigh reported that there have been about 800 robots put into military service within the last 18 months. "This is an exciting time to be working on robots with the Army." The American branch of the British-based science and technology conglomerate QinetiQ and the Chelmsford, Massachusetts-based Endeavor Robotics have received the lion's share of the contracts to develop the robot warriors.

India is Investing Into AI-Integrated Warfare Technologies, Tata Sons Aligns
Amidst China's growing focus on AI-Integrated, unmanned warfare technologies; India is also revving-up towards artificial intelligence (AI) warfare technologies. Recently, it has been reported that government is incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the operational preparedness of the armed forces. This would equip the Indian Army with unmanned tanks, vessels, aerial vehicles and robotic weaponry. The move is said to be a part of a broader policy initiative to prepare the Army, Navy and the Air Force for next generation warfare. Secretary Defence Production Ajay Kumar said, "The government had decided to introduce AI in all the three forces as it would be a "big area" considering the requirements of future warfare. He said a high-powered task force headed by Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran was finalising the specifics and framework of the project, which would be implemented in a "partnership model" between the armed forces and the private sector. "It is India's preparation for next-generation warfare.

According to reports, he said, "The changes that blockchain technology and AI will bring about in agriculture will be revolutionary. As of now, farmers in a few parts of the country are already using this technology in their practices." The Line Between Big Tech and Defense Work
For months, a growing faction of Google employees has tried to force the company to drop out of a controversial military program called Project Maven. More than 4,000 employees, including dozens of senior engineers, have signed a petition asking Google to cancel the contract. Last week, Gizmodo reported that a dozen employees resigned over the project. "There are a bunch more waiting for job offers (like me) before we do so," one engineer says. On Friday, employees communicating through an internal mailing list discussed refusing to interview job candidates in order to slow the project's progress.

The speech supports the Government's Industrial Strategy, which includes four Grand Challenges to put the UK at the forefront of future technologies and industries. This includes growing the artificial intelligence and data driven economy and managing an ageing society. Data science is the use of maths, statistics and computer science to get answers from large, complex data sets, while AI is the use of computer algorithms to draw conclusions from this type of data without direct human input.
