Orlando Police Testing Amazon's Real-Time Facial Recognition
Tech companies are trying to sell police real-time facial recognition systems, which can track and identify people as they walk down the street. As NPR reported two weeks ago, American police have generally held off, but there's new evidence that one police department -- Orlando, Fla. -- has decided to try it out. What's more, Orlando ordered its facial recognition system from Amazon. This information was uncovered by the ACLU, which noticed that law enforcement customers were mentioned in the marketing of Amazon's "Rekognition" service. Until now, American police have used facial recognition primarily to compare still photos from crime scenes with mug shots.

Experts disclose new details about 300-year-old shipwreck
A Spanish galleon laden with treasures worth ยฃ12.6 billion ($17 billion) that sank to the bottom of the Caribbean 300 years ago was found using an autonomous robot, researchers have revealed. The San Jose, sunk by the Royal Navy, gained a reputation as the'holy grail' of shipwrecks and was carrying one of the most valuable hauls of treasure ever lost at sea. The 62-gun, three-masted galleon, went down on June 8, 1708, with 600 people on board as well as a treasure of gold, silver and emeralds during a battle with British ships in the War of Spanish Succession. The San Jose was located by an underwater autonomous vehicle operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) back in 2015. The institution said it was keeping its involvement in the discovery quiet out of respect for the Colombian government.

Artificial intelligence for early cancer diagnosis
The British government has announced ambitious plans to prevent an estimated 22,000 cancer deaths by 2033, through the use of artificial intelligence to predict those individuals at greater risk of developing the disease. The platforms being developed under funding from the British government are targeted at prostate, lung and bowel cancer. The specific aim of the platform is to detect individuals at a greater risk from these types of cancers earlier by assessing the millions of data points held by the National Health Service (NHS), drawing upon information contained in patient records, such as genetic information, and lifestyle factors. With lifestyle factors, this could include social media profiles. This will help to determine which patients to screen and when to refer people for medical assessments.
India working on application of artificial intelligence to boost capabilities of armed forces
New Delhi: In an ambitious defence project, the government has started work on incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the operational preparedness of the armed forces in a significant way that would include equipping them with unmanned tanks, vessels, aerial vehicles and robotic weaponry. The move is part of a broader policy initiative to prepare the Army, Navy and the Air Force for next generation warfare and comes amid rising Chinese investments in developing critical applications of AI for its military. Secretary-defence production Ajay Kumar said the government had decided to introduce AI in all the three forces as it would be a "big area" considering the requirements of future warfare. He said a high-powered task force headed by Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran was finalising the specifics and framework of the project, which would be implemented in a "partnership model" between the armed forces and the private sector. "It is India's preparation for next generation warfare. This (AI) is where the future is going to be. We need to prepare ourselves for the next generation warfare which will be more and more technology driven, more and more automated and robotised," he told PTI.
