AI is learning how to trump purveyors of 'fake news'
Remember that video US president Donald Trump tweeted in which he wrestled someone to the ground and started punching them? It was genuine footage of Trump from a popular wrestling show but he had the image doctored to replace the victim's head with the CNN logo and added the hashtag #FraudNewsCNN, just in case we didn't get the memo that he really dislikes the news network. But are these news networks as biased as he thinks? Do Fox News journalists say mostly nice things while those at CNN are busy portraying him in a negative light? Artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of sentiment analysis and stance detection can tell us what is really happening.
FDA approves AI algorithm to help detect wrist fractures
The Food and Drug Administration has cleared new computer-aided detection and diagnosis software that uses an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze X-ray images to detect wrist fractures in adult patients. The OsteoDetect software from Imagen Technologies, which was reviewed through the De Novo premarket regulatory pathway for low to moderate risk devices, analyzes wrist radiographs using machine learning techniques to identify and highlight regions of distal radius fracture--a common type of wrist fracture--to aid detection and diagnosis. "Artificial intelligence algorithms have tremendous potential to help healthcare providers diagnose and treat medical conditions," said Robert Ochs, acting deputy director for radiological health, Office of In Vitro Diagnostics and Radiological Health in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health. "This software can help providers detect wrist fractures more quickly and aid in the diagnosis of fractures." According to the FDA, the software is "intended to be used by clinicians in various settings, including primary care, emergency medicine, urgent care and specialty care, such as orthopedics."
Robots learning war from video games - MoD
Robots that train themselves in battle tactics by playing video games could be used to mount cyber-attacks, the UK military fears. The warning is in a Ministry of Defence report on artificial intelligence. Researchers in Silicon Valley are using strategy games, such as Starcraft II, to teach systems how to solve complex problems on their own. But artificial intelligence (AI) programs can then "be readily adapted" to wage cyber-warfare, the MoD says. Officials are particularly concerned about the ability of rogue states and terrorists to mount advanced persistent threat attacks, which can disable critical infrastructure and steal sensitive information.

Make in India set to get big robotics, Artificial Intelligence boost as ABB, Niti Aayog ink deal
Technology company ABB India and Niti Aayog joined hands to boost the government's vision of'Make in India' through advanced manufacturing technologies that incorporate the latest developments in robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). A Statement of Intent (SoI) was signed on Wednesday for both to work together in preparing key sectors of the economy for digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI) robotics, and industrial automation, an ABB India statement said. The initiative will cover the fast growing segment of electric mobility. Niti Aayog and ABB will work with government ministries, solicit feedback for areas critical to them and discuss solutions using industrial automation, and digitalisation technologies. "We are looking forward to learning more about practical applications of future technologies such as AI and IoT, especially in streamlining governance and economic systems. This collaboration, which will include cross-sectoral understanding of digitalization at ABB's world class centers, will be key in driving progress of key sectors in India. This collaboration is meant to lead to actionable insights and focused plans that will help India become a center for advanced manufacturing," said Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Applied to Cybersecurity
Given the rapid evolution of AI/ML technologies and the enormous challenges we all face with respect to cybersecurity, what is needed from AI/ML, where can it be best applied, and what must be done over the next 10 years? This esteemed group of individuals identified challenges associated with the question, proposed multiple topics for discussion that could potentially address the question, and then collectively prioritized six specific topics that must be addressed to answer the question. They collectively authored a paper focused on exploring these challenges and identifying the most viable solutions. The paper is a deliverable of the IEEE Industry Engagement Committee, in cooperation with Syntegrity who provided their services pro bono. This project highlights the strategic dimension of connecting technology leadership through industry and into policy.

Uber self-driving car saw pedestrian but did not brake before crash
An autonomous Uber car spotted a pedestrian about six seconds before fatally hitting her but did not stop because the system used to automatically apply brakes in potentially dangerous situations had been disabled, US federal investigators said. In a preliminary report on the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said emergency braking maneuvers are not enabled while Uber's cars are under computer control'to reduce the potential for erratic vehicle behavior'. Instead, Uber relies on a human backup driver to intervene but the system is not designed to alert the driver. Investigators examine a driverless Uber SUV that fatally struck a woman in Arizona. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said emergency braking maneuvers are not enabled while Uber's cars are under computer control In the crash in March, the driver Rafaela Vasquez began steering less than a second before impact but did not brake until less than a second after impact, according to the preliminary report, which does not determine fault.
The dangers of AI challenge even the experts
At the Re-Work Deep Learning Summit in Boston today, a panel of ethicists and engineers discussed some of the biggest challenges facing artificial intelligence: algorithmic biases, ethics in AI, and whether the tools to create AI should be made widely available. The panel included Simon Mueller, cofounder and vice president of think tank The Future Society; Cansu Canca, founder and director of the AI Ethics Lab; Gabriele Fariello, a Harvard instructor in machine learning, researcher in neuroinformatics, and chief information officer at the University of Rhode Island; and Kathy Pham, a Google, IBM, and United States Digital Service alum who's currently researching ethics at the Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering at Harvard Berkman Klein Center and MIT Media Lab. Mueller kicked off the discussion with a thorny question: Is ethics the most pressing problem for the progress of AI? "It's always an'engineering first and solve the tech problem first' attitude [when it comes to AI]," Pham said. "There are a lot of experts out there who have been thinking about this, [but] those voices need to be recognized as just as valuable as the engineers in the room." Canca agreed that ethics aren't discussed among product leads and designers as often as they should be.
