Responsible Community Pilot Program Launched To Train Drone Pilots

Various companies collaborate for better future, and International Association of Community Drone Pilots (IACDP) is partnering with a drone pilot community, DroneUp to launch the Responsible Community Pilot program. The RCP program focuses on engaging drone pilots through training, certification, idea-sharing and community. The program will also cover online courses and exams, standard of conduct and detailed safety guidelines. "Our efforts to build this community through training and a sense of purpose are having dramatic positive effects on ensuring air safety," says Tom Walker, CEO and founder of DroneUp. "IACDP is motivated by a desire to make a positive impact on the industry," says John Evans, President of IACDP.

Google to Scrub U.S. Military Deal Protested by Employees-Source

Alphabet Inc's Google will not renew a contract to help the U.S. military analyse aerial drone imagery when it expires in March, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday, as the company moves to defuse internal uproar over the deal. The defence programme, called Project Maven, set off a revolt inside Google, as factions of employees opposed Google technology being used in warfare. The dissidents said it clashed with the company's stated principle of doing no harm and cited risks around using a nascent artificial intelligence technology in lethal situations. Google plans to honour what is left of its contract on Project Maven, the person said. More than 4,600 employees signed a petition calling for Google to cancel the deal, with at least 13 employees resigning in recent weeks in protest at Google's involvement, according to a second person familiar with the deal.

Artificial intelligence refers to the ability of computers systems to perform tasks that normally require human intellect and judgment. Also called machine learning, these systems take in data that is structured or unstructured producing algorithms, finding patterns, and continually learning and refining its capacity over time to make decisions, guide behavior, offer solutions, or act. AI is now moving rapidly into "deep learning" which looks not just at the face value of data but draws meaning and representations from initial and cumulative data accelerating its learning and capacity as it grows. IBM's Watson is probably the most commonly know system exercising deep learning. Although the term was first coined in the mid 1950s, we are beginning to see their use in everyday life with self-driving cars, airplane autopilot systems, automatically controlling traffic lights based on flow and density, mobile check deposits deciphering handwriting, detecting human emotion to target advertising, and analyzing electronic trails to learn and exploit human behavior patterns.


Google expected to rake in $250 million from AI drone research

Google's involvement in the Pentagon's controversial Project Maven kicked up a storm within the company in recent months, prompting more than 3,000 employees to sign a letter in opposition and more than a dozen to resign. Despite the protests, internal emails obtained by the Intercept show that the Mountain View company planned to ramp up artificial intelligence research for military drones. One September exchange between Google AI chief Fei-Fei Li, two members of Google's defense and intelligence sales team, and members of the communications team, notes that Project Maven alone would net $15 million over the next 18 months, and as much as $250 million in the coming years. They also show that Google competed with Amazon to secure a vaunted slot on Project Maven and that the contract was "directly related" to a cloud computing contract worth billions of dollars. The Intercept speculates that the computing contract is the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI), a 10-year, $10 billion initiative that seeks to migrate much of the U.S. military's data to a commercial cloud provider.


A Reinforced Topic-Aware Convolutional Sequence-to-Sequence Model for Abstractive Text Summarization

In this paper, we propose a deep learning approach to tackle the automatic summarization tasks by incorporating topic information into the convolutional sequence-to-sequence (ConvS2S) model and using self-critical sequence training (SCST) for optimization. Through jointly attending to topics and word-level alignment, our approach can improve coherence, diversity, and informativeness of generated summaries via a biased probability generation mechanism. On the other hand, reinforcement training, like SCST, directly optimizes the proposed model with respect to the non-differentiable metric ROUGE, which also avoids the exposure bias during inference. We carry out the experimental evaluation with state-of-the-art methods over the Gigaword, DUC-2004, and LCSTS datasets. The empirical results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method in the abstractive summarization.


Google pulls out of controversial military AI project

Google is ending its controversial'Project Maven' deal with the Pentagon. Google Cloud boss Diane Greene informed employees of the decision during an internal meeting on Friday morning, Gizmodo reported, citing sources close to the situation. The contract, in which the Pentagon used Google's artificial intelligence technologies to analyze drone footage, was set to expire in 2019. Greene told employees that it won't be renewing the contract once it expires. Google is calling off its controversial'Project Maven' program with the Pentagon.
