Multilevel Artificial Neural Network Training for Spatially Correlated Learning
Multigrid modeling algorithms are a technique used to accelerate relaxation models running on a hierarchy of similar graphlike structures. We introduce and demonstrate a new method for training neural networks which uses multilevel methods. Using an objective function derived from a graph-distance metric, we perform orthogonally-constrained optimization to find optimal prolongation and restriction maps between graphs. We compare and contrast several methods for performing this numerical optimization, and additionally present some new theoretical results on upper bounds of this type of objective function. Once calculated, these optimal maps between graphs form the core of Multiscale Artificial Neural Network (MsANN) training, a new procedure we present which simultaneously trains a hierarchy of neural network models of varying spatial resolution. Parameter information is passed between members of this hierarchy according to standard coarsening and refinement schedules from the multiscale modelling literature. In our machine learning experiments, these models are able to learn faster than default training, achieving a comparable level of error in an order of magnitude fewer training examples.
Using Search Queries to Understand Health Information Needs in Africa

The lack of comprehensive, high-quality health data in developing nations creates a roadblock for combating the impacts of disease. One key challenge is understanding the health information needs of people in these nations. Without understanding people's everyday needs, concerns, and misconceptions, health organizations and policymakers lack the ability to effectively target education and programming efforts. In this paper, we propose a bottom-up approach that uses search data from individuals to uncover and gain insight into health information needs in Africa. We analyze Bing searches related to HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis from all 54 African nations. For each disease, we automatically derive a set of common search themes or topics, revealing a wide-spread interest in various types of information, including disease symptoms, drugs, concerns about breastfeeding, as well as stigma, beliefs in natural cures, and other topics that may be hard to uncover through traditional surveys. We expose the different patterns that emerge in health information needs by demographic groups (age and sex) and country. We also uncover discrepancies in the quality of content returned by search engines to users by topic. Combined, our results suggest that search data can help illuminate health information needs in Africa and inform discussions on health policy and targeted education efforts both on- and offline.

We're in a golden age for hollow corporate statements sold as high-minded ethical treatises. Last year, in the thick of its fake news scandal, Facebook released a 5,000-word document outlining, well, I'm still not sure exactly. The letter attempted to pull the company out of its public opinion black hole by posing probing questions, including the head-scratcher: "How do we help people build supportive communities that strengthen traditional institutions in a world where membership in these institutions is declining?" The answers were generally of the "build more Facebook" variety. It was a masterstroke in corporate pablum, though not so masterful that it saved the company from the onslaught of bad press.
Can Artificial Intelligence Hold Police Accountable? The Crime Report
Brandon Anderson sees artificial intelligence as the key to holding police accountable for racial bias, and he believes he has created a tool to do it. "Police departments crunch huge amounts of data today, but we still don't know how often law enforcement officers have hurt, killed, or for that matter saved and comforted people in the line of duty," Anderson told CNBC. Now the Oklahoma City native is seeking to change that with the creation of Raheem.AI, a data tool and chatbot app that allows community members to report police conduct in real time in a secure and anonymous way. On Tuesday, Anderson, 33, was chosen as a 2018 fellow by Echoing Green, which funds innovation in areas ranging from racial justice to environmental conservation, for his work on Raheem. Engineers and designers from Google, Square, Twitter, and Facebook who are working on Raheem.AI as volunteers.

The US dollar had an event-heavy week to start off June. The US dollar surged early last week as the uncertainty about the Euro arose due to political events happened in Europe and the volatility in Asian markets driven by threats of an immediate trade war between the US and China. On Thursday (May 31), the Euro rebounded as Italy's politicians seemed to have found a resolution to their struggles in forming a new government. In the same day, the Trump administration announced it was putting tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and Europe, strengthening fears over the trade war and making the US dollar suffer a slump. The US labor indicators highlighted the fundamental strength of the country's economy and made the US dollar extend gains amid the Europe geopolitical turmoil.
MIT Has Taught the Machines How to Use Wifi to See People Through Walls
The Machines now have X-ray vision. A new piece of software has been trained to use wifi signals -- which pass through walls, but bounce off living tissue -- to monitor the movements, breathing, and heartbeats of humans on the other side of those walls. The researchers say this new tech's promise lies in areas like remote healthcare, particularly elder care, but it's hard to ignore slightly more dystopian applications. While it's easy to think of this new technology as a futuristic Life Alert monitor, it's worth noting that at least one member of the research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology behind the innovation has previously received funding from the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Another also presented work at a security research symposium curated by a c-suite member of In-Q-Tel, the CIA's high-tech venture capital firm.

IBM bets big on artificial intelligence for server business
NEW DELHI: Tech giant IBM has unveiled a new line of power system servers that can handle intensive computing workloads at organisations using new-age technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). "The next-generation power systems servers incorporate a newly designed POWER9 processor. This has been built specifically for compute-intensive AI workloads... Using this, enterprises can over a period of time build more accurate AI applications, faster," Satya Sharma, IBM Fellow and Cognitive Systems CTO ( IBM Systems), said. He added that data scientists can build applications faster, ranging from deep learning insights in scientific research, real-time fraud detection and credit risk analysis. IBM Director (Systems) India/South Asia Viswanath Ramaswamy said over the next 2-5 years, AI will become embedded in enterprises across sectors retail and financial services.
Unmanned Nasa plane flies solo through public airspace
Nasa has flown a large, remotely piloted predator drone equipped with detect-and-avoid technologies through the national airspace system for the first time without a safety chase plane following it. The space agency says the'milestone' flight over California moves the US closer to normalising unmanned aircraft operations in airspace used by commercial and private pilots. The test used a non-military version of the Air Force's MQ-9 Predator B called Ikhana that is 36 feet (11 meters) long and has a 66-foot (20-meter) wingspan. It paves the way for large remotely-piloted aircraft to be used in all kinds of services, from fighting forest fires to providing emergency search and rescue operations, according to Nasa. The flight took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California and entered controlled air space almost immediately.
