X-ray vision will soon give soldiers the ability to see through walls

Bionic soldiers with X-ray vision could soon be a reality thanks to a new wireless system that uses radio-waves to map people's movements behind walls. Researchers at MIT trained artificial intelligence to analyze radio signals that bounce off human bodies to create a dynamic stick figure that mimics a person's actions. The so-called neural network can sense people's postures and movement even from the outside of a building or room. MIT says the tech can be embedded into a wireless device, which would theoretically allow soldiers to hook it up to their combat gear – like helmets and night-vision goggles.

AI could wreak economic havoc--we need more of it
The vast vacant lot along the Monongahela River has been a scar from Pittsburgh's industrial past for decades. It was once the site of the Jones and Laughlin steelworks, one of the largest such facilities in the city back when steel was the dominant industry there. Most of the massive structures are long gone, leaving behind empty fields pocked with occasional remnants of steelmaking and a few odd buildings. Next to the sprawling site is one of Pittsburgh's poorer neighborhoods, Hazelwood, where a house can go for less than $50,000. As with many of the towns that stretch south along the river toward West Virginia, like McKeesport and Duquesne, the economic reasons for its existence--steel and coal--are a fading memory. These days the old steel site, called Hazelwood Green by its developers, is coming back to life.

TradeRev-H, an enhanced version of ADESA's TradeRev app for one-hour online auctions, seeks to tap machine learning to change how vehicle inspections are done. KAR Auction Services Inc. unveiled the enhancements to TradeRev, based in North York, Ont., near Toronto, in March before the NADA Show. KAR Auction Services Inc. in October 2017 acquired full ownership of the Canada-based TradeRev technology that allows dealers to electronically bid on and purchase used vehicles before they reach physical auctions. To indicate that the technology is groundbreaking, the "H" is for Grace Hopper, a U.S. Navy rear admiral credited with developing the precursor to the Common Business Oriented Language, or COBOL, computer- programming language. "For any digital remarketing channel, the visual condition report is key," said Peter Kelly, KAR's chief technology officer.

In Africa, it's not just Kenya that knows the value of AI. Aubra Anthony, a strategy and research lead for the Center for Digital Development within the U.S. Agency for International Development, wrote on 24 May 2018 in techcrunch.com about his discovery in Johannesburg, South Africa. This is what he says: "On a recent work trip, I found myself in a swanky-but-still-hip office of a private tech firm. I was drinking a freshly frothed cappuccino, eyeing a mini-fridge stocked with local beer and standing amidst a group of hoodie-clad software developers typing away diligently at their laptops against a backdrop of Star Wars and xkcd comic wallpaper. I wasn't in Silicon Valley: I was in Johannesburg, South Africa, meeting with a firm that is designing machine learning (ML) tools for a local project backed by the U.S. Agency for International Development."
AI Found a Planet Outside of Our Solar System--Can It Find More?
The results from the launch of the Kepler* space telescope and the K2 mission to search for planets outside of our solar system have been nothing short of astounding. From Kepler, 2,343 exoplanet candidates have been discovered while 2,343 have been actually confirmed. So far, 30 of those planets have the potential to be habitable. One of those exoplanets, Kepler-90i, is a toasty and rocky destination 2,545 light-years away that orbits its host star every 14.4 days. This planet was found using an early incarnation of artificial intelligence.

Because we all know that military training has nothing whatsoever to do with facilitating injuries to people. Google's moral posturing aside, the brouhaha over Project Maven does raise a whole lot of important questions over what defense, national security and law-enforcement applications of artificial intelligence will mean for humanity in the near and distant futures.
China's new fleet of unmanned assault boats to use artificial intelligence, experts say
China is currently testing unmanned, miniaturized assault boats that could be used by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to attack enemies at sea. Artificial intelligence technology that has traditionally been implemented in aerial drones will be used in the boats. "Once equipped with weapons, unmanned small combat vessels can attack the enemy in large numbers, similar to drones," said Li Jie, a Beijing-based naval expert. The prototypes, which resemble shark fins, were developed in a collaboration between a Guangdong-based tech company and the PLA. China isn't alone in developing unmanned vehicles, as the United States and other Western counties are working on creating "ant swarms" for operations on the ground, "drone swarms" for aerial operations and "shark swarms" for the sea.
