In a statement, AP spokeswoman Lauren Easton said that AP journalists "met with representatives from the Department of Justice in an effort to get information on stories they were reporting, as reporters do. During the course of the meeting, they asked DOJ representatives about a storage locker belonging to Paul Manafort, without sharing its name or location."

Early Friday morning, SpaceX will launch its 15th cargo mission to the International Space Station for NASA, sending up nearly 6,000 pounds of supplies on top of its Falcon 9 rocket. On board the vehicle are shipments of food and water for the six astronauts living on the ISS, as well as new science experiments and technologies to be tested out in microgravity. And within that haul includes the first ever AI robot "crew member" to live on the station. The robot's name is CIMON -- for Crew Interactive Mobile Companion -- and it looks a bit like a volleyball with a computer screen on one side. The screen displays a simplified cartoon face that the bot will use to interact with the humans on the ISS.

A beautiful space-exploration friendship between human and machine may have just begun. Early this morning (June 29), a small robot endowed with artificial intelligence (AI) launched on a two-day trip to the International Space Station aboard SpaceX's Dragon cargo capsule. No other AI-equipped machine has ever flown to space before, project team members said. The mission of the bantam astronaut assistant -- known as CIMON, short for "Crew Interactive Mobile Companion" -- is relatively short and modest. But its work off-Earth could help pave the way for some pretty big things, according to NASA officials.

The International Space Station will get its first AI bot by next week, after it was bundled into a Dragon capsule and launched into space aboard Space X's Falcon Rocket on Friday. On the screen flashes a simple cartoon face known as CIMON (Crew Interactive MObile CompanioN), pronounced as Simon. CIMON was developed by Airbus and IBM. The AI bit, presumably, comes from some sort of programmed neural network that uses some of the tools from IBM's Watson platform. "In short, CIMON will be the first AI-based mission and flight assistance system," said Manfred Jaumann, Head of Microgravity Payloads at Airbus.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in mid-April released the Medical Device Safety Action Plan, with the goal of making devices safer.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today said statistics, data management and artificial intelligence can play a pivotal role in the betterment of humanity. "We were living in a world in which knowledge explosion, information overload and data-driven lives have become common place," said Mr Naidu at the closing ceremony of 125th birth anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the founder of Indian Statistical Institute. "Technology has become all-pervasive in our world... Statistics and big data management along with artificial intelligence will play a more significant role in the years to come," he added. Statistical data was "information with confirmation" he said, adding that "many people may claim many things, but if you have statistics you will know the reality". Highlighting that there was a need to harness the power of computing, communication and robotics to improve the quality of life, Mr Naidu said to use these tools, data and statistics were needed.

Two-and-a-half years ago, technology wizard and Stanford University Master of Science in Computer Science graduate David Gunningjoined with DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, to manage a program to develop explainable artificial intelligence. And listen up: The XAI arena, as it's abbreviated, is where we want to head -- this is where technology development ought to focus. XAI is the common-sense older brother in a digitized world filled with flashy, privacy-invading, data-gobbling gadgets and machine-controlling bullies. The goal of XAI, Gunning said, in a recent telephone conversation, is not so much to "take human thinking and put it into machines," as nearly all of today's artificial intelligence seeks to do. Rather, XAI's aim is to equip the machine with the ability to tell its human operators why it arrives at the conclusions it does -- to make the machine explain itself, so to speak. That means humans still stay at the helm.

To protect a property, these systems use technology like geofencing, facial recognition and A.I.-enabled cameras to help identify intruders. If someone breaks that boundary, the cameras will alert a command center. If someone loiters too long at a call box at the entrance to an estate, the system sends an alert to the monitoring center, which responds with a tailored warning, like "You in the blue shirt, please leave." Mr. Young said the system uses artificial intelligence to tell the difference between movement into and out of a property, but it also uses facial recognition technology to distinguish regular visitors -- like gardeners or delivery people -- from strangers. "When I worked at the White House, the grounds were gridded out with cables," said Mr. Young, who was part of the Marine One security detail and served as an emergency action planner to the executive branch during President George W. Bush's administration.

Uber put its autonomous vehicle testing on hold following a fatal accident involving one of its cars in Tempe, Arizona. But the company now plans to resume testing in Pittsburgh and maybe San Francisco in August, according to The Information. Additionally, Uber told its employees that it will put into place 16 safety recommendations that were proposed by an internal team. The company said in a statement last month that it had been working closely with the National Transportation Safety Board as it reviewed its safety practices and it also hired former NTSB Chairman Christopher Hart to advise its safety efforts. Among the changes to be implemented are a set of emergency braking features that will back up the main self-driving system -- an issue the NTSB brought up in its report -- and the company also plans to reinstate its use of a second safety rider.
